Hail snow

That is Graupel, it is like hail, but it is really a snowflake that accumulates supercooled water droplets as it falls through the cloud, or there could be some updrafts that could allow more ice to accrete on the snowflake, making graupel in and in severe thunderstorms, hail.

Lovely film, I live in Scotland and we frequently get prolonged hail that precedes the heavy snow, the hail is usually from when we get the Siberian wind crossing the north sea ( Lake effect) it sucks up the moisture but because it is so cold it usually dumps a foot of hail stones then the dry powder snow which can last 2-3 weeks.

Hail is generally not a winter event. Generally, you'll only see sleet or grouple, but this is clearly grouple. Usually though it melts on impact.

This is definitely Graupel, a word that comes to us from France that means "Hard Snow". This kind of "Snow" comes from a lower convective cloud structure, and turbulence. The wind field actually can become so violent, that it spins the snowflakes into tiny balls of precipitation. The balls of Snow then begin to try to melt just a bit, then refreeze, as they come back into colder air, 32 degrees or lower.

Just in case you need a name for this kind of snow ,its "corn snow"
