Hailan is actually the one concubine the Emperor treats the best in the series. If you think about it, he punished Noble Consort Hu when she tormented Hailan with the false charcoal accusations. Allowed her to move in with Ruyi. He then allowed her to stay with Ruyi when she was initially confined to Yanxi palace before going into the cold Palace. He then allowed Hailan to retain Yanxi for herself despite being of lower status, not sending her to suffer under another concubine. He permitted her to visit Ruyi secretly, and never publicly reprimanding her. He also listened and took her seriously when she spoke of the others misdeeds, and did not let her to be physically harmed when confined in the office of careful punishment. He had more respect and genuine affection for her in many ways then even Ruyi.

Empress is the wife, and all other women are concubine, which by definition is actually a servant to the family. People don't know anymore but the origin of the character '妾' for concubine, actually meant a women with a disgrace and crime, it shows a woman under punishment gears. The drama series don't show it but 'divorcing' a empress is a HUGE deal, almost second to if the emperer himself is giving seat to his son. Plus empress usually come from prominent families that give the country a lot of money or military support.

Как жаль, что нет перевода на русском языке. Столько серий читать субтитры бегущие как поезд в метро только портить глаза. И титры все не прочитать и жизнь героев на экране не посмотреть. Очень достойная дорама, но увы смотреть тяжело. Жаль!
