I don't know him well, but I've always had an appreciation for Ethiopia and him. Korea was torn apart by ideologies and the struggle for supremacy between the great powers, but he sent imperial guards to Korea while sympathizing with the pain of the country being invaded, not with ideology and benefit.( he appealed to the international community for Mussolini's unfair and brutal invasion of Ethiopia, but no country helped Ethiopia, and because of that experience, Koreans learned that he helped Korea for that reason even though he did not know Korea well.) They fought very bravely in korean war. They've never been defeated and lost, even in a foreign country which is very different environments and climates from their home country they created an orphanage for war orphans I want Ethiopia to become incredibly wealthy. Sending love from Korea Ethiopia is my favorite africa country. Thank you king

When I lived n Ghana long ago, Haile Selassie made an official visit and we often saw him driving by with Kwame Nkrumah to cheering crowds. I sat close behind the pair of them for several hours at a military display but alas, just out of earshot so we could not hear their conversation - but they appeared to get on very well and laughed a great deal. He seemed such a pleasant character and I have always admired him greatly. This film has made me think again - but, on reflection, I think I will stick to my original opinion, it was so much nicer!!

I feel you. It would be good to also consider the realities of that era when weighing the new information on him. I think that as much as he wanted political and economic progress for the country, he was aware of the cons and bureaucratic delays that a completely democratic structure would present, and then there's the natural reluctance and difficulty inherent in completely changing a centuries old system. Of course, there's also the high that absolute or near absolute power delivers. It seems like he just always tried to play his best hand without being too rigid or seeming weak. Try contrasting him with people like Idi Amin, Robert Mugabe, and Mobutu Sese Seko that were complete psychos.

With all do respect to my Ethiopian sisters and brothers Haile Selassie was a ruthless leader disguised as devoted christian. For many decades still to this day many ethiopians and i am sure many who know Haileselassie do not know his dark side, what he has done to Eritreans just because we are who we are, he has committed mass murder, publically and privately , he hated my people, many souls got hanged, slaughtered, buried alive even got killed in front of their families and children. He even said in his public speech" We don't want the people, we just want the land". I always find it crazy, why a leader with such a large beautiful country would want our land, i do know now but whatever the reason , he didn't have to be so cruel, with love so much could have been done. As a famous Ethiopian historian said during the Ethipian Conflict in the late 90's and early 2000's , history is written by those who win and are in control, many of my Ethiopian brother and sisters will not like this comment but i believe in God, i am a christian and i am only speaking the truth and unveiling evil. He is not the only one who oppressed my people, it's other countries too but they did not commit the level of crime that he and his successor communist and fascist leader Mengistu Hailemariam have committed. The name haileselassie is a name he gave himself which means power of the trinity, the only one who posseses that power is only the creator. Many leaders and popular people on this earth present themselves as saviors for only people to start idolizing them some knowingly and some unknowingly because they are lured into their ideology. Ethiopian has very rich history, and i know Ras Teferri has played in political roles that excelled ethiopia and help recognize around the world, it also has beautiful landscapes, i seen it when i and my family got deported during the 90's conflict, I got many ethiopian friends and family friends but it's time for the truth to be spoken. Much love and respect to you all.

In my opinion, Emperor Haile Selassie was the best for Ethiopia! No one can be perfect but he tried his best to modernise Ethiopia and introduce Ethiopia to the whole wide world! Very wise holy man and highly diplomatic! Look at Ethiopia after the vicious Derg overthrow the monarchy & denying everything what The Emperor did for Ethiopia! Since Derg took over & right up to now, Ethiopia is still bleeding! It got worse and worse to the point people are fleeing from Ethiopia in their thousands! Only a handful of people are happy and those people are either they are working for the government or /and family members and relatives of the authorities! The majority of Ethiopians are suffering in their everyday life! Derg, TPLF and the current government killed so many innocent civilians of Ethiopia than the Emperor! He was much better of all the rest even if he has some faults as any other human beings! No one talks about his achievements like the Ethiopian Airlines, he gave his palace for the University , for his efforts to make Ethiopia a member of the league of Nations, for his struggles to unite the Africans and subsequently OAU was born ( now AU), for making Ethiopia a member of the U.N. etc Jah lives in our hearts forever!✊🏽 Let him rest in peace ☮️ with lots of ❤ ❤❤❤ God save Ethiopia 🇪🇹

An excellent documentary no doubt. I have visited Ethiopia numerous times and have met with people who lived under Haile Selassie. Without a single exception, they said that life was better, at least in Addis Ababa and Jimma (Oromo kingdom). He was a great visionary, but also a man of his time, and in comparison with other African leaders, he was probably the best and most developed and liberal of the lot.

This documentary on Ras Teferi Mekonnen is well-researched and factual. Its objective and serious tone sets it apart from others I have seen. I’m impressed by how much information is presented in, say, the first 20 minutes, and by the attention to detail in presenting events accurately and without exaggeration. Historians have much to learn from this. I'd say this is the best possible way to present history. Because, as Paul Valéry quite vividly puts it, "History is the most dangerous product ever concocted by the chemistry of the intellect. It causes dreams, inebriates nations, saddles them with false memories … keeps their old sores running, torments them when they are not at rest, and induces in them megalomania and the mania of persecution." P.S. Liked. Subscribed. Enjoying the rest of your videos while waiting for more! ...Thank! You!

This documentary is based on recent Western history. Egypt was a county of Ethiopia/Axum empire. Both Christian and Islamic religions were first practiced in Ethiopia before Christianity went to the Western World through Martin Luther. The first Mecca is still in Ethiopia. However, a prototype was moved to Saudi Arabia. Africa had civilized kingdoms that existed before defeat by Greece, Rome, and thereafter the Western colonialists.

Excellent video. I think of Selassie just as the video covers it. A leader with courage, dedication and good intentions to start, but then who falls into the trap of having too much power over too long a time that corrupts the individual and leads to authoritarianism and repression. How many times have we witnessed this on this planet? However, I knew little about Selassie and this transition before seeing this video. I'd get bits of the problems in Eritrea but a news snippet never covered the history and reasons, only that 'the conflict, disease, and starvation' continue. These documentaries are fantastic histories so we can understand our own times.

It was 1974 school holiday, and I was travelling towards the north of Ethiopia to take my vacation in Asmara, where I learned about the cout d etat of the Emperor. It was peaceful atmosphere and not that much movement for the airport and bus station were closed. When the bus stations opened I travelled back to Addis Ababa where everything seemed normal. Much later, I found out that the Emperor was killed as well as the Eritrean General who was together with the self-proclaimed ruler of Ethiopia. I actually did not feel much tensions or unrest till I left in mid-1975. Thanks for some of the informations you shared though some seemed not right.

A little H.I.M. knowledge: H.l.M. Haile Selassie (ph) was one of very few modern monarchs or heads of state to partake in military combat whilst ruling. When the other League of Nations refused to come to Ethiopia's assistance when it was attacked by Italy, as per LON treaty, He gave a speech that predicted their failure to act against Italian aggression would soon see some of them shortly facing aggression themselves, which shortly came true when Italy, Germany and Japan began their warpaths. He was a founding member of the Organization of African Unity (predecessor to current African Union) and a strong Pan Africanist, provided the OAU with a headquarters in Addis Ababa and even paid the dues for several African nations, provided funding, training and refuge for many revolutionary groups fighting for independence and against colonialism in Africa, Asia, and the Americas (even the PLO and some Black Panthers trained in Ethiopia). Many ANC members and their families were given training and or asylum in Ethiopia and the Emperor supplied scholarships or funds for many of them to study in Ethiopia or Europe. A stirring speech He gave denouncing injustice and racism was used almost word for word as the lyrics to Bob Marley's revolutionary song "War". Despite His experience with the League of Nations, when South Korea was invaded by the North and the UN called on members to defend SK, Selassie provided troops from His own elite royal personal bodyguard units, the best in the Empire. They served as the Kagnew Battalions, alongside mostly US troops, in yearly rotations. They had a record of never losing any battle, none ever surrendered or were captured and they never left any bodies behind. Some NK soldiers believed they had mystical powers and feared them. After the Korean War "paused" the K Battalions served as peacekeeping forces for years. SK dedicated monuments to the KB in Addis Ababa and in S Korea.

The only crime Haile Selassie is guilty of, is trusting the western world and being deceived, He was a great leader, respected and admired by leaders across the world and his people, I was born in Ethiopia from European parents in 1958, when I left it was not by choice, Ethiopia will always be my home. Thank you for this very decent, educating and certainly interesting documentary.... Ethiopia is a fascinating country, with a very unique early christian history and a distinctive religious architecture.... Incidentally, I remember Emperor Haile Selassie, when I was a child in Europe and I confirm that he was a well liked and respected figure... It seems that after a good start, obviously beneficial for the development of his country, that he was eventually overwhelmed by difficulties, complexities and fatigue due to aging.... He certainly paid a heavy price for his mistakes and failures.

This is true about dogs. Selassie bred what was since referred to as an African Chihuahua. They destroyed all his dogs after deposing him as emperor. A friends mom in the 70’s was a writer for SI and received a dog from Selassie as a gift shortly before he was deposed and killed. The dog, named Haile, was the only remaining Chihuahua and I was given the job of driving the dog to a breeder and then back to their summer home. At the time I had no idea of the dogs history. Haile successfully gave birth to a healthy litter. So I guess the breed continues?

Emperor Selassie was faced with adversity all through his years even before becoming crowned king of Ethiopia had he was giving a fair chance with honesty and the loyalty of the league of nations and the people of Africa, both Ethiopia and Africa itself would've been in better standings especially on the world stage, he made many efforts to do the right things it was just too much opposition all around on every side so he realized he was all alone trying to unite a people country and continent with little to no genuine support, everyone had a different agenda besides what he really wanted to accomplish and that was to modernize Ethiopia and Africa and remain a free and independent people.

Every international deal Haile Selassie made benefited Ethiopia. How could he have being a porn to America or Russia? This is not Haile Maryam Meguste they're talking about.

I saw this story on another video about Selaisse and I thought I’d share it here. This individual’s father grew up in Ethiopia in the 50’s. Selaisse was touring schools in his father’s home province and he happened to visit his school. The children were ordered to turn around so as to not look at the emperor as a sign of respect. Well, when the emperor entered the room, this individual’s father turned around and looked up at Selaisse. Selaisse simply looked back at him, nodded, then kept walking. I just found this story interesting and thought y’all would like to hear it as well.

Because of Ethiopia's status in Africa, it's vital role in the anti colonial and anti apartheid struggles and in the independence movements of most African nations and in African unity many African nations adopted the colors of the Ethiopian flag into their own.

We Ethiopians did get christianity from one of Lord and savior Jesus Christ Apostles named Philip in the origin land of christianity near Jerusalem, ''As they traveled along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, “Look, here is water. What can stand in the way of my being baptized?” [37] [c] 38 And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptized him. 39 When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord suddenly took Philip away, and the eunuch did not see him again, but went on his way rejoicing'' for more reference read Holy Bible Apostle 8:27-40, Thank you for the video
