I have a weird headcanon for this form of massage, a butcher either gets run out of business or just doesn't want to do that job anymore so takes his knives and tries to do something else, he tries a bunch of odd jobs like woodcutting, but when his knives go dull he can't use them anymore, on a last ditch effort he joins a massage school where he learns to use his knives like this to relax people and so knife massage was born.

If there is any directly physical benefit, it’s really hard to tease out of the data. No one massage tradition seems to be superior to any other. That’s not to trash massage, though. It’s a really comfortable process, and everyone should let themselves experience it from time to time. If anything, it opens the door to all kinds of unexplored massage techniques. As long as it either provides an interesting sensation on the skin or fights a muscle into relaxing, and it doesn’t injure the recipient, it’s probably fair game. I bet you could do Lego massage and it’d be legit.
