As a curly girl who has been cutting her own hair for 10+ years now, I can tell you that you are absolutely 100% correct in saying that you shouldn’t pull on the hairs as you cut them. Also, always always always cut LESS than you think you should! When you have long hair, the weight of it creates looser curls, but then when you cut it, it coils up tighter and tighter, so taking away 1 actual inch could take away 2 visual inches, if that makes any sense.

It’s okay to pull on them as long as it’s not full tension and you understand your shrinkage. My curls shrink by 50% so when I used to do a curly fringe I’d note where on my curl I’d want the fringe to be, pull with 50% tension and cut below the point where I wanted the curl to end. Id then wet and restyle to check and because I gave myself a margin of error I could always go back in and chop more

@@pyro-millie5533 Disagree. From experience. Everyone who looks at curly hair who does NOT also have curly hair thinks it's difficult. It's not. Like ANY hair type, curls take time to learn. In reality, a person with pin-straight, thin hair would have the hardest to deal with. There is little to no lift or volume, there is no texture and there is no movement. Curly hair is only challenging if a person is lazy/ignorant. Not sure which you are, but Afro-textured hair and curly hair in general are not "hard to manage" by default.

As a curly girl I would have to say a lot of hair stylists don’t know how to cut curly hair. I’ve had stylists wet my hair down and then put tension on it and cut it like it is straight. It ends up waaaaay too short and does not look good. I’ve cut my own for so many years now. The good thing is the curls hide a multitude of sins.

Same here, but some hairdresser had the brilliant idea to cut it dry. I told them to cut 5 cm (2 in), I have 3a curls: 20 cm of hair (like 8 in) left the chat. Curls went up and I happened to be a triangle even if I have thin hair and it's not naturally full. Never went there again.

Yes, makes it even more annoying when you know your hair better than the hair stylist. Not to mention that Euopean hair is still different than African/African American hair. And that also applies for curls. But they are the professionals and they know better. *sigh* btw too much layers look hideous on my curls, and it's always too much layers. :)

@@debahern7101 this is exactly why hairstylists need more diversity in hair and to learn how to properly cut all hair types. im going to cosmetology school and my school teaches the difference and how to do it properly and its important to me to learn that because i have naturally wavy hair and it just always looked horrible because even though its not curly, treating it like its straight is just not good for it. now that i properly care for it, it looks good and not frizzy. so i want to learn all different hair types so people leave happy and looking the way they wanted and their hair is properly cared for the way it should be.

Yes! One of my daughters has super curly hair and we've only cut it a few times and 2 of those times the stylist had no clue. The other two did great. But we're now going to a salon that specializes in curly hair, which duh, but I was so ignorant to how to help her care for her hair for years.

As a person with really curly hair, you kind of have to learn to be your own expert, because-I'm sorry-the vast majority of stylists do not know how to treat your hair. So watching these videos (especially the first one), I was really stunned by some of the choices these girls made, because I KNOW they knew better. @@sammyes415 lol no, if you pull my hair, it will double in length. No shot making a straight edge while pulling. Maybe you can clean up the cut after it’s cut dry and without tension. Also you wouldn’t be able to see were to cut because you can’t see the pattern of the curl under tension. You wouldn’t want to cut the curl in half so to speak. Plus you won’t know how much you are cutting including the shrinkage. It will pop back up and you will have a nice surprise.

As a curly hair girl, the only time you can put tension on the curls is if youre cutting them SOAKING wet so there's little to no texture going on. But even then you have to be SUPER aware and careful of how everything will lay once its dried. I've gone to the same hairdresser for over a decade bc I buzzed my hair the first time I saw her, and have since grown it out to shoulder/chest length and back and forth. She knows exactly how my hair will lay/look in every stage of growth. I only trust her to cut my curls at this point and the day she retires is the day I die.

Before doing bangs for myself some days ago I went to 3 hairstylist with a picture of how I wanted my bangs and neither of them did what I wanted. I knew the model of what I expected because almost all my life I had bangs. My hairstylists did it super long or they did it with so little hair. So I decided to do it myself with a tutorial of yours because I remembered that I watched something about products of hair that I liked. And I don’t know how to really cut my hair but it turned out perfect with your help. (Also, my hair is wavy and it’s not that complex as curly hair) Thanks, Love you Brad ❤️ You have the talent✨🫶🏻

Why only "black'? They don't have the monopoly on wavy/curly hair. It's like a hair cult in the comments and it's what drove me out of the curly community. Pleeenty of other ethnicities have curly hair and tips beyond what's seen on youtube. Not against black people also being involved, but this gate keeping is not helpful.

Curly girl here. When I straighten my hair, before I get to the other side, there is a 4 inch difference between the still curly & the straightened side. That's how much my hair shrinks. So, you can't pull on a curl and cut it without it boinging up shorter than you expected. My coworkers used to tease me about being the only person they knew who could get their haircut and come out of the salon with longer (looking) hair (curly vs. straightened).

I recently cut my bangs too short. I decided to just style them to the side. My hair just curls up and to the side, and it actually looks like I styled it with a curling iron. Curly hair can hide many mistakes, especially if you have high density. I also think layers compliment bangs. I used to be afraid of layers, but I love the effect they create! Layers and bangs look super cute!!

I have the worst time finding the right stylist. Most of the time I get stylists who give me things like extra long, face-framing, disconnected front pieces when I asked for a trim on my blunt bob and emphasised the front being blunt. And sometimes it's not even remotely close at all to what I asked for, but feels more like something they wanted to do instead. I've worked in a salon before (in admin) and picked up enough to know what to ask for, so I'm not going in there like "I want three layers" or anything. So I just don't get it 😔 The most recent time I saw a professional stylist I got a balayage that was done so badly that after giving them two more chances to fix it I've decided to just deal with it myself (I super hate making a fuss, but it wasn't really blended at all on one side, it was a straight line, and they then "fixed" it by just putting blocky chunks of a darker red toner over the unblended area. They fully covered my natural colour with that red, which I had deeply wanted to keep as the base after growing it out for so long, and the "blend" just looked like pixels). I'm low key starting to feel a bit hurt when I see people go in to their stylist and get amazing hair that fits exactly who they are and what they're going for. I hope that will be me one day 🥲
@debybel
