Ion Demi / semi permanent hair color is different than box dye. Box dye is that dye you buy at the grocery store-in a box- that comes with a crazy strong developer (like 40 volume) and you mix it with your color before you put it on your head. Things like ion are deposit only so those do coat the hair shaft but do not wreak the havoc that box die does on your hair! I’m a hair stylist and I’ve used ion to put pink in my hair and it just washed out ☺️

tankr3 yep. People always blame the hairstylist but it’s not usually our fault😂😂 don’t show pictures of things you don’t actually want🤷🏽‍♀️ but I always analyze the picture and ask what parts about them that they like. And I’d never give someone layers without asking.

Another way you can get hair dye out: Use crushed up vitamin C tablets or baking soda and mix it with an anti-dandruff shampoo such as head and shoulders :) *if anyone has any other suggestions please let me know I constantly feel the need to change my hair colour because I’m i n d e c i s i v e*

I don't think ion classifies as "box dye". When people talk shit about box dye they're talking about the hair dye at Walmart and Target in the big boxes that comes with everything and gloves. Technically most hair dye comes in boxes, but the tubes (like ion) that you mix with developer, is literally professional product.

Part of the issue with the colour in the pinterest photo is that it's ashy, so it really has to be lightened a little bit more to make up for how the light interacts with the coolness. All over babylights/microweave (the same treatment a lot of instagram blondes use for colour) will achieve that look much better than the chunkier highlights. I'm very surprised at how dark your roots were left. Also, don't feel bad about telling the stylist it's too dark. There may have been nothing they could do that day, but they certainly would have fixed it for you. If you try it again, be very vocal in your consult about what specifically you like about the pictures you bring in (the texture, movement, how piecey it is, the colour below the chin vs colour at the root, etc). In hair school, we learned that nobody looks at pictures the same way, and it's important to vocalize the things you see because I may interpret something as warm when you see cool or vice versa.

To get your darker brown hair to be lighter like the picture you wanted they would have to bleach your whole head which is not ideal for anyone. So they probably did foils( highlights) to make it lighter. I have my cosmetology license and that happens a lot. You can’t just throw a color on your hair and get it a level lighter. They should’ve explained that to you. Hope next time they will be able to make you happy.

Megan, here’s something i recommend. My hispanic mother ALWAYS wanted me to have lighter hair. naturally i was born with dark brown hair UNTIL (here’s the kicker) i used a shampoo and conditioner that lightens my hair naturally. it’s not like “after one wash and you got this magical hair” it takes like 2-3 weeks for it to actually work. AND it’s like 7 bucks. it’s called Manzanilla Grisi. it’s got shampoo and conditioner (use both for better results) WOW I SOUND LIKE IM SELLING YOU SOMETHING ANYWAY, try it out. they sell it at walmart, amazon, target. but when in stores it’s always in the hispanic section/ aisle. you know where it’s only hispanic stuff. anyway, try it out. my hair looks ravishing so 💁🏽‍♀️

Next time you're in Jacksonville, you should go see Kristyn Wentz from ReAlign hair studio. I've got short hair a lot like yours except with bangs (she actually originally cut it from a pinterest picture). She always does and really good job and she's good at color (I haven't used her for that, but other members of my family do)
