(22 Sep 1994) U.S. troops turned Port-Au-Prince into an American base by
Thursday (22/9). The American flag flies throughout the city, and checkpoints have been established. U.S. helicopters patrol the city, issuing loudspeaker demands in French, English and Creole that the Haitians stay calm and cooperate with the American forces. On Thursday Special Forces troops took over the heavy weapons company at Camp d'Application, Haiti's best equipped force, and a major air base in the city. They are in the process of taking control of two other major
Haitian bases as part of Operation Restore Democracy.
