Thank you Sifu Hai Yang. I have long been waiting to understand the link between the Yijing trigrams and the palm changes of Baguazhang - and now you tell us that there are no 1-to-1 correspondence between the Yijing trigrams and Baguazhang's 64 palms :-D It seems I've been caught in cultural utopianism too.

Above all, this lecture makes it clear to me that there are MANY teachers out there claiming to teach complete Pa Kua Chang systems when they, in fact, have nothing of the sort. It's a bit demoralizing, to be honest. However, I do believe that long, thoughtful practice of fundamental movements and principles and the development of the 'Bagua body' can be a great help in advancing one's own practice even if you realize that you've only been taught bits and pieces of a whole system. I truly appreciate all the thought and organization that you've put into this presentation. It's clearly the product of long years of study and development. I especially appreciate the distinction you make between linear practices that were developed later that were perhaps influenced by Xingyi methodology and linear practices that were most likely included in the Bagua taught by Tung Hai Chuan to his disciples. I did notice you didn't reiterate your belief that this 'Original' Bagua most likely did not include much, if any, circle-walking practice or forms. I can imagine that belief is a source of controversy and argument that you would rather avoid, much like the topics of chi kung or chi in internal martial arts can be contentious and unproductive to discuss with people who have strongly-held beliefs about the subject. Once again, Sifu, I truly appreciate you sharing your deep knowledge on these arts with such clarity and honesty. I hope you are doing well.

"did not include much, if any (!!!), circle-walking practice" ... I don't know what you are talking about ... But Circle-Walking is a fundamental training and energetic method in the practice of Bagua Zhang, if you don't practice it don't be surprised if you don't understand why. The palms can be practiced in linear or circular depending on what you want to work on at the moment. Serious practitioners have no beliefs, but experience of their practice ...You talk about "beliefs" and habits of others, but you'd better be wary of yours to start ...
@pgskills
@pgskills 4 жыл бұрын
@@ISkandarash Who's talking about not circle-walking? You're late to the conversation, buddy. You need to go back and watch his previous Bagua-related lectures; specifically the vid on Cheng style Bagua. It lays out the evidence for the idea that walking a closed circle was more than likely not a part of the curriculum that Tung Hai Chuan taught his students and that it was a necessary modification introduced by Cheng Tinghua which later came to be adopted by nearly all the various Bagua styles. I appreciate the many benefits of circle-walking and it comprises a large portion of my Bagua practice. That doesn't change historical facts. Neither does your bluster about your experience.

Wonderful explanation! The discussion of weapons, in particular sword (dao) was particularly interesting. Would love to see how dao is practiced in Cheng style baguazhang, and also how that then relates back to barehand techniques. Master Yang, please explain why in MMA we don’t see internal style martial artists to prevail and to win the fights? I understand that not all people who practice internal styles are not warriors but after all those styles are all martial arts and their founders have been warriors, real-life bodyguards etc. I also understand that some are not interested in public fights but on the other side even in China some masters did accept the challenges and fought on the public stage in history. But today, it is somewhere lost or hidden.
@HaiYangChannel
@HaiYangChannel 4 жыл бұрын
Hello, this is a very interesting question. My answer is that different WAY of training generates different result. To compete with others on the stage needs to specific training, which is beyond any styles. Internal martial artists do not have the same intensity and quantity of training hours/methods/system aimed as MMA. Also, it is a personal choice, not a style choice. I hope in the future that new generation of internal style students will train themselves and go for compete with MMA. I hope I answered your question. Thanks,

It Certainly has been a real Treat for me this Summer to be able to watch these Clips, as I'm sure many others very much enjoyed this Video Series. In most Cheng Style Bagua Lineages, the 8 Mother Palms, which serve as the foundation for all 64 Palms, are done as one Continuous Form, or else One Mother Palm is followed by the Next Mother Palm until all 8 Palms are completed. It would be nice if Master Yang would create a Clip showing his unique interpretation of all 8 Mother Palms, as I'm sure so many of us would appreciate this. The bagua or 8 trigrams is very miss understood. Imagine you standing facing east you back is to the west, there are five divisions of day and five divisions of night, the all dash symbol of three is the frount of your body, the all line symbol of three is your back these are the six gates, water and fire are left side and right side and the other four are the 45s on that diagram, the earth itself has the symbols of the opposite diagram in each direction you move to so when you twist the circle walking you are moving to the direction of the ba gua on the earth with the bagua of the body so that your movement is making the two diagrams into one in the correct orientation on the diagram in the world. This is application of the one movement of the hexagram.
