I can only sum up the flash back as the best thing to happen to Hajime no Ippo the anime EVER. Seriously, flashback tackles the problem of poverty, post WWII, but also tackles the problem that Hiroshima had faced as well as the struggles between races and class. I absolutely loved this arc, it was probably the best, if not one of the best arcs in Hajime no Ippo the show.

There's one really touching moment in the manga,small spoilers ahead Ippo was training for his next fight,in order to get stronger he would hit log with mallet until it was stuck in a hill,he did the same thing as Kamogawa but with mallet.Kamogawa saw that and was scared for Ippo's fists' health and asked Itagaki: "Did this kid really do this with only his fists?" Itagaki replied: "Of course not,you have to be crazy to do something like that" Kamogawa smiled and said: "Yeah you really have to be a fool"

And here on the backstory its just how americans treated the japanese after WW2, it was a rly hard time for Japan. Watch the Anime Rainbow if interested.
