AC Fan Not Running - Replacing the HVAC Fan Motor vs Capacitor

Today I went out and repaired our central AC. It's a 3-Ton Weather King 10AJB36A01. A week ago we noticed the house was no longer cooling and I went out to discover a buzzing noise from the Compressor/Condensor/Fan unit outside. I was able to stop and start the unit and the fan would run for a while and then visibly slow down making a weird noise and finally stop. Buzzing alone can sometimes mean that just the capacitor is bad. So, I went and got a new capacitor and tried that first, but got the same general results. Short fan run followed by buzzing. By the way, this unit uses a 45/3 MFD 370 Volt capacitor. So, it was obvious that the motor was just worn and giving out. I removed the old motor and ordered a new fan motor online (Part #51-100999-04). This is the entire process of reinstalling everything. To disassemble you would just do everything I'm doing here in reverse order. WARNING: ALWAYS BE EXTREMELY CAUTIOUS AROUND HIGH VOLTAGE, CAPACITORS AND PRESSURIZED LINES! DISCONNECT ANY POWER SOURCES AND HANDLE CAPACITORS WITH RUBBER GLOVES!

Thank you very much for the great video! We've never worked on the AC unit before and the technician wanted $800 to replace the fan motor. We ordered the part online for $150 and replaced it in less than 30 minutes. Your instructions were spot on.

Thank you!Thank you! Our A/C stopped cooling in the afternoon of July 4th, of all the times! I found this video and analyzed the units condition afterward. Made a trip to Grovers with the old capacitor Sunday morning and found one just like it. Bingo! That did the trick. Your video was very easy to follow!

I change my capacitor my self only when needed I keep one in stock mine go out about every 3-4 years though the years of all my homes the capacitor is the issue , years ago had companies do this and was just taking my money replacing other parts that really did not need replacement and I caught one co doing this to me , he stated computer board was bad on condenser, thermostat inside was not working correctly replacing all would be 3500.00 I told him I’ll call him back , I looked on you tube fixed the issue with the 29.99 capacitor and the unit is still working after 3 years with nothing else changed out , lesson learn the hard way for me I even learn what to check and how to check it you tube saved me

Awsome, I fixed it! I got a $27 capacitor at a local appliance store, ( it was a little bigger around & slightly shorter but had all the same values = 47uf, etc.). I put it in & used my photo of the old one before I removed the wires to match up the wires again. Bam, the A/C fan worked & has been working for several days now. Thanks for your video.

I hope you don't mind the small plug here; but we pride ourselves on selling used AC units all across the country and value videos like this one teaching people the right things! Cheers! I appreciate taking your time to post this video. The motor on my outside unit starting make a grinding/squeaking noise late tonight and so I went out look and think it's bearing(s) in the motor. Going to try and replace the motor myself tomorrow using this video as a guide. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks a bunch for the help!

Thank you for sharing the repair video. This is exactly what I need, step by step how to put the new motor back on. It would be even nicer if the video includes how the old motor was taken out. But, I can't complain too much. This is extremely helpful especially when you said in the end to always check the capacitor first. My motor is running for the first 10 minutes each time it is turned on, then making a big noise and stop. I hope it is the capacitor problem.

you really just made my freaking summer. at the ass end of last summer the fan wouldn't turn on unless "kick started" so I figured it was the capacitor. since I don't use heat in the winter I didn't bother to replace it. what that has to do with your video is that I have the same exact unit as you, and I pulled the capacitor. sure enough, like yours it was improperly specced. it was a 30/5. 30uF was probably a big part of the problem and why it died so quickly (the previous owner of my condo said she had the capacitor replaced about 3 years ago. I've lived in places for a decade that never needed a new capacitor. 3 years sounded way off. seeing that you said 45/5uF is the proper spec, that's what I'm going to pick up in a few hours when home depot opens since they sell a 45/5uF 370v capacitor for under $10. the motor, blades and compressor all seem to be in great shape, though, so after the new cap and a clean filter I should be enjoying nice, frosty air conditioning.
@mdvapejunkie7015
@mdvapejunkie7015 8 жыл бұрын
I meant that I'm getting a 45/3uF, not 45/5. the 30/5 was the problem. you say the start uF isn't as important as the running uF, but if the starting uF is too low in combination with the running uF being too high, that seems like a recipe for burning out a capacitor quickly... it's not putting out enough at start, but then puts out too much to keep it running

I’m no hvac guy but all’s been in YT lately so, bam! Good video, three recommendations, 1. While you have the fan motor out, recommend cleaning out the bottom of the condenser casing (leaves and other grass trash) 2. ALWAYS discharge the capacitor and make sure you have the indoor thermostat in the off position (you could have 24-28VAC to the contactor) 3. The contactor is very cheap, recommend replacing it when you change the capacitor

I have a trane unit and i think the motor burn out, because I had capacitor replaced with a new one, and the fan would start working and then stop running. So I when inside the house to turn it off and back on, and the fan would slowly turn and then stop turning again ....I was told by a A/C tech, that Trane motors can only be bought from the manufactor because of the way the motors are design and it would be costly more than their normal stock motors. I will have no choice but to buy one if it is the motor. After seeing your video, I wasn't aware that the wrong capacitor can ruined a motor out,. about 2 years ago I've replaced the capacitor when my unit outside stop blowing air and it ran ok until now. This time I was so sure it was the capacitor again . So i took the old capacitor and replaced with the indentical capacitor 45+7.5. I notced my unit has 2 capacitors so I replaced the 2nd capacitor 370vac/5mfd I even replaced the connnectors too and after all the replacements the unit still wasn't working. I was sure then it might be the motor.. bummer. . Perhaps this is why my motor burnout. I was problaby replacing the incorrect capacitors from the start since the house was not new when I bought it and all this time the unit was running with incorrect capacitors The technicians who sold me the capacitor never asked me what sized unit I had or else I've would've bought the right capacitor, because of your video I will double checked to see I have the right capacitor before installing the new motor, meanwhile, I will be removing the motor and have it trouble shoot it at the shop before buying a new one.. Your detail information is valuable and informative. Please make more. THANKS

You don't have to guess what capacitor you need. Just take a look at the label of the motor. In your case you have 2 capacitors - A Dual one - 45/7.5mFd and a single one - 5mFd. The 5mFd was most like installed when the motor was replaced in the past. It does not mean it is not the right size capacitor - it depends on your replacement motor. So, don't automatically assume you have wrong size capacitors. What about the dual capacitor? The 45mFd is for the compressor, the 7.5mFd is for the original fan motor. Since the original fan motor was replaced, you don't use this side of the dual capacitor. It is just a guess, but I think your fan motor is spinning harder than it is supposed to, so it is overheating and it stops working. Just replace the motor and install a new capacitor - the new capacitor must be the size which the new motor is calling for.

Hi, I am a DIY, I plan to change my Fan motor but I am afraid of the Fan blade won't come out from the motor shaft due the old age and rust, corrosion...etc. other than using WD40, have you heard about using Torch and heat it on the shaft and fan blade? , by using heat, the nut should come out right? Or do I have to buy that $35 tools fan puller to remove nut for a one time deal? Thanks for the video.👍

There is no issue with your fan. The contactor is controlled by a 24v low voltage circuit. That circuit includes at least a transformer located in the furnace, a terminal strip of some sort located in the furnace, the thermostat, the wire from the furnace to the thermostat, the wire from the furnace to the condenser, and the compressor contactor. It can also include low pressure switch, a high pressure switch, or a low ambient lockout, all in the condenser. Something is wrong in that circuit.

My AC unit has the 5 micro farad capacitor just for the fan. They removed the wires from the duel 40 micro farad & 5 microfarad cap. The compresser will not run unless it is configured this way for some reason, so I put it back to how they had it and it runs like a pussycat.

I watched but couldn't hear you. I'm in FL & A/C fan has been blowing for 2 days but temp keeps going up. I changed filter, ran water down that overflow thing, checked the breakers, nothing is frozen, sweating or even cold. I have two zones and now zone 1, upstairs is just blowing air (fan set on auto), zone 2 downstairs not doing anything. When I go back & look at compressor, fan isn't turning & doesn't sound like motor is on. I even checked attic to make sure duct work didn't come apart AGAIN! Yes & 4 companies couldn't figure it out. I thought I needed freon but the scenario seems to get worse. I took that fuse out & put it in that's in box near compressor but nothing happens. Could I need a new fuse? How can I tell? It's 85 in here now but I want to check what I can before I have to call for service . 2 yrs ago, everything that could be was changed out & cleaned (when it was the duct work). Thanks Gail

Also, your replacement capacitor is a 440V instead of the 370V. That's why it won't fit in that hole. It works just fine (larger value is acceptable) operationally, but completely unnecessary for that unit. If you swap that with a 370V dual-run capacitor with the same specs otherwise (compare the micro-farad values), it'll fit back into that hole like it's supposed to. Note that this is not necessary operationally; that's just an FYI as to why it won't fit. In the meantime, I'd do what others suggested and secure it with some metal pipe strap or something. You don't wait it sitting there loose! (even a piece of stick-on velcro on the bottom would probably work...)

zipting2000 Ok so again let's all stop and think about the purpose of these videos. Its not to see who's the smartest man alive with all if's and but's. The purpose is to help the general public. Now if I say low voltage and high voltage should not be mixed, and someone uses that advice to install an AC unit....that person who uses my advice would be right 100% of the time by using my advice. There is no code out there states high voltage and low voltage must be mixed. With that being said... if you work in a "state" or "county" where the practice of mixing the 2 voltages is NOT ok and you understand the potential dangers of mixing the 2 voltages, I don't believe you would be digging through the NEC code book every time you cross a state or county line to see if you can get away with mixing the two. You would do it the way YOU know is safe.

Edit, good news, moron move, main breaker I thought was on ....was off, fan ramped up nicely but loudly, might be the way I put the shroud back together? Or the bearings are going out? But after tearing it down and spending time learning the nuts and bolts and caps of it all and found the fan model for the future I'm armed with knowledge. A pro would have cleaned the condenser coils while the top was off. Lol while you were screwing with the paint, the debris in the bottom will turn to mud blocking the drain holes. Rain and condensate will cause the bottom to rust out. That cap should have been secured to something with a wire tie. Big deal to me Mr Safety, is an open access disconnect to your helper and his pals. Put a bolt,lock or something to keep kids out of the 220.

It is true that caps are about 9 bucks for a Contractor but I would like to say to become one costs a lot more.so it's in their right to sell it for more just because they need to pay for a lot more stuff. like Licenses And Insurance. If someone doesn't know what they are doing you or you didn't like how it was handle report it to BBB.org. You did a good job but you should always leave It to a tech.it may be more to pay but there is away a risk when doing it your self.

I have a question I recently changed my fan motor and capacitor because my fan was turning on and off I noticed my house was not cooling so I checked my unit outside and I noticed the compressor was turning on and would shut off and the fan wasn’t turning on I changed the fan and capacitor and it turned right on but after a few minutes the fan turn off and my compressor would kick on and turn off I’m guessing because the fan wasn’t kicking on does any one know what could be the problem it’s a good man 3 ton

Hi today my Central Air wasn't working, I went to the unit outside and it was quiet. I hit the reset and it kicked on but the condensor fan wasn't spinning. I gave it a spin with a stick and it started to spin perfectly on it's own. Later in the day again it wasn't spinning, I repeated the same process and it worked. my fan spins easily when I give it a spin. I'm trying to figure out if it's the condensor motor or capacitor, is there a way to determine? I appreciate any help. Thank you.

Hey i have the same issue. I too had to push my fan. I did that just now and waiting for my house to cool down from 85 degrees. Did you figure out what the problem was? Was it expensive?

zenitram102 After Hak steered me in the right direction, I DISCONNECTED the power and opened the unit. My plan was to get the information off the capacitor and buy a new one. What I noticed was one of the leads that plugs into the Cap. had broken off so it wasn't making a good connection. It basically was just pressing against the terminal. I put a new female plug on it and pressed it back in place, it's been working fine since. So though my Cap wasn't "bad" it wasn't able to do it's job probably. If your fan motor spins freely when you spin it by hand I would definitely replace the cap 1st. It's easy to do and not expensive. Get the part number off the suspected bad one and order a replacement. I cannot stress enough the importance of killing all power before working on it and even with power removed, the cap. can still hold enough of a charge to give you a bad shock. Hope that helps.

my capacitor looked fine but was not reading right. to the naked eye you couldn't really tell if my capacitor was bad. I switched it out and BOOM! the fan quickly kicked on. I heard someone paid close to 200 to get this done when the part is only about $30. lol

Well I have a number of issues with this. First, yes I am a contractor, but that is not my issue! Did you check the AMP draw on that motor when you started it? You do not have to wait to see if it's good, check it right away, clean the condenser coils and the unit out for sure when its open, and strap the capactitor. The capacitor rating is determined by the motor and compresor in the unit, NOT the original size that was in the unit. Something may have changed along the way. Was the contactor replaced? it should have been! Escpecially with a ten plus year old unit, and all the spider debris around it. Have you thought you might be giving just enough instruction to kill someone? Last, the reason parts cost more at some places than others is not that the contractor is ripping them off. They have insurnace, overheads, fuel, auto repairs and every other aspect of business to pay for. If you want cheap, you get cheap and it will show.

Sonny Cannon I don't know who's idea was to install Goodman 13 SEEE air conditioners at my church. The past ones, which got stolen and scraped, were Lennox Elite from the either 2001 or 2002. I forgot the seer rating on it but they were the best air conditioners at the time. The Goodmans were installed 2011, the same year the lennoxs were stolen.

So the point of these videos is to make less educated people informed. In your own words "if both are insulated for high voltage." The wires in this junction box were obviously not insulated 18 Gauge THHN. So in this application the wiring was incorrect and people need to know it's not O.K. There could also be a partitioned area of some sort, but again in this application there is no partition. Now there are two reasons I know why this is not O.K. Most important if the two wires were to short on each other and a load is applied the low voltage wire is going to get hot and potentially melt and start a fire. These low voltage wires just had wire nuts on them that could get bumped off and short to the high voltage. Also not all low voltage technicians are trained in high voltage, so they separate the two so that people do not get injured. So again in this video the wiring is incorrect. And because of the potential for fire we would not want to mislead people into thinking this is O.K.

Km M You must belong to those less educated people since you are not familiar with the NEC. The wires inside are insulated to 600V, both for power and control. They do not have to be THHN either, TW are better for this application.First read the NEC and then dispense advise to the less educated people. It is apparent your ego is bigger than your knowledge.

Andrey Andrews The world and what it has become. I will state a few facts and then I am done with this conversation. Your TW wire from what I can tell is not a product heavily in use today. It also appears that TW does not really go smaller than 14 gauge. If you look in the video the thermostat wire being used is 18/5. There are red, white, blue, green, and yellow conductors. Two of the conductors are being used with the rest of them being wrapped around the sheathing. Standard thermostat wire is rated for only 150 volts. I will even give you the benefit and say that this is plenum rated wiring. Plenum rated wiring is only 300 volts. You stated that they both need to be insulated for 600 volts. You make reference to the whole "NEC" book....I am glad you know what this book is but you make no reference to a particular section of this book that would back up your claims. Nor do you make any reference as to why you believe this specific wire is rated to 600 volts. Again I am not saying that it is impossible to mix high voltage and low voltage...I am stating that in this video the wiring is incorrect. I am not going to get into name calling because that's not what this is about. If you have something educational to share then I am all ears.
