In 1975 I started to learn German. In 1977 I went to Germany for the first time. The same year I saw Bergman's 'Magic Flute' for the first time. I have never grown tired of this joyous masterpiece.

It's not just that they're good looking, it's their acting. When Hakan as Papageno first hears Elizabeth, he has this wonderful little smile. The bit with the break away clothing is genius!

It is my favorite scene of all to because Papageno and Papagena are very likable and sweet. This is a beautiful love story like Tamino and Pamina. Thank you for put this video in youtube :)

Papageno is the courageous "fool" of the play at first a comical character but also tragic in that he is alone until the end when Papagena show up and together with the three boys stop him from hanging himself out of despair! And Bergman only made a movie "musical" off the original opera script by Wolfgang A. Mozart!

My gosh this is an enjoyable opera. It is so accessable, which I believe is what Mozart had in mind.

I love this Papageno (always have, or at least since I was five years old) - but it's really sad that he's carrying a noose around 24/7...

I always say this opera sounds much better in Swedish than in German, and in general, so beautiful a movie by Bergmann...

@pettymolly It's intended to be an opera to the people. That is why the originall libretto is in german. If this would be a opera fr the nobles it would have been italian. So, here we have a opera to the swedish people :-)

Hagegard reminds me of Michael Ian Black for some reason... Also, Papapegna is hawwwwt

@pettymolly I dont think Mozart cared much about the language he wrote for since he wanted to make money for the operas he wrote. He gave us wonderful music that everyone can understand. The libretto is changed so we can appreciate the lyrics and dialogs aswell. They did a live production in Gothenburgs Operahouse last year based on Ingmars film. It was fabolous. Im sure many more swedish people felt more interested to appreciate Mozarts music when the libretto was in swedish.
