He used the sounds that you would hear where the movie was set, the church bells, the whip cracks the galloping drums; the voices. Takes you to the place in your mind. Genius! Although apparently, the use of the Mexican trumpet on "The Showdown" was Sergio Leone's idea.

In A Fistful of Dollars, it was the budget that drove Morricone to street musicians, including those for the Jew's Harp, Electric Guitar, and a Professional Whistler to fill in for the full orchestra they couldn't afford. With the later movies, they kept that distinctive eclectic mix, thankfully.

Weird that i somehow knew that the whistle tone from TGTBATU was a Western cliche before i ever even saw the film. No idea how i knew that, but i did. It's instantly recognizable by anyone. The whistle, the bell, the harmonica, with just a few simple notes he fully conveys the image of the West, Native Americans, cowboys, lonely plains, etc. That really takes a special genius to achieve.

Serious question, I've never watched the Dollars trilogy but I have a mild interest in westerns is it worth the watch? How does it hold up? Has it aged really poorly? I don't mean to insult anyone but I want and honest opinion.
@KC-Mitch2 жыл бұрын
@@Zero00wolfkiller It aged amazingly. It's not a Hollywood film. In fact, if it wasn't for Eastwood and the fact the film is in English, you'd never associate it with American media. It was filmed in Spain by an Italian moviemaker. If you've seen films with a western theme (Back to the Future III being an obvious choice), then this is the film trilogy every Hollywood western portrays. Westerns were pretty bad in a lot (though not all) cases. Most were campy and felt like high budget TV productions at the time. This trilogy literally redefined what a western was. It's filmed (sort of) on location. I say sort of because, again, it was filmed in southern Spain. Yet, production didn't use soundstages and the crew built a literal town for the first movie - which is a tourist spot to this day called _Mini Hollywood_ just north of Almeria. I hate most westerns, but I love this trilogy.

Everything about these movies was new and great! Prior to these westerns the cowboys were always so clean looking. The towns, the characters etc When someone was shot they just grabbed their stomach and fell to the ground. When Sergio Leone came on the scene with A Fistful Of Dollars in 1964 everything changed. The cowboys were dirty, dusty, unshaven and mean. The bad guys were BAD. When someone was shot they were knocked back with the force of the bullet and the gunshot sounded real and loud. The good guy was Clint Easwood a stranger referred to as The Man with no name. He wore a hat and poncho and he was always faster to the draw than the bad guys. There was some cheeky humour occasionally and above all there was the music of Italian film music composer Ennio Morricone. Everything about these westerns was brilliant. The trilogy of 'A Fistful Of Dollars' 1964, 'For A Few Dollars More' 1965 and the big one 'The Good The Bad And The Ugly' 1966. Mike
@actarusfleed66075 жыл бұрын
Hey Mike, they shot scenes of one or more of the Trilogy movies around my home town of Norcia back in central Italy, on the high plains of Castelluccio of Norcia, region of Umbria and in neighbouring Marche & Abbruzzi regions. These regions have landscapes that look like Mexico. When I was a youngster living there in the 70's, I saw a 10 part documentary series transmitted by RAI & Sergio Leone was in it. I have researched for many years but unfortunately cannot find it. I wish I had a VCR back then. It was priceless, worth 1,000,000 fold in gold. Immagine having that documentary? Wallach, Eastwood, Van Cleef & other actors were in it. That would have been Spaghetti Western heaven for me. Other spaghetti western movies were shot in these regions featuring the late legendary iconic actor Giuliano Gemma (aka Montgomery Wood) who played Ringo. I am a true hardcore fan of the Spaghetti Western genre as my late grandfather Angelo was a county Sheriff in the U.S.A. 1920. But that is another epic story that the late famous movie director Lino Procacci (a paesano, fellow country man (home town of Abeto) that was close to my grandfather's home town of Piedivalle) wanted to make an autobiography of his life's journey. What my grandfather lived through and became is the legend that stuff is made of. An almost 7 ft. gentle giant of a man but also a tough bad ass that no one ever dared to fuck around with. He was born in 1892 and I have been eternally blessed to have met him. He told me many of his life's adventures and life lessons. He was a sharp shooter & very fast with the hand gun. Skills that kept him alive in those days. He had a posse as well. We have his diary, photos and war memorabilia documenting his life's accomplishments. I miss him dearly. R.I.P. grandfather Angelo. To this day if you go to Piedivalle and ask about the Sheriff, even without knowing his name, the older and newer generations will tell you who he is and where his home was. He is a legend in our part of the country. His reputation still precedes him. He continues to live in our hearts and souls forever. He is not a fictional character like Tuco, Blondie or Angel Eyes. He is the real McCoy!! You see Mike, the passion for Spaghetti Western movies and music runs in our our blood, in our families for two generations. Adios gringo!

A quote from Clint Eastwood as Josey Wales "Now remember, when things look bad and it looks like your not gonna make it, then you gotta get mean. I mean plumb, mad-dog mean. These 3 Classics “Fist Full of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, and The Good, Bad, and the Ugly” were brilliantly scripted, directed and nothing before or since compares to this. Sergio Leone was the first to use extreme facial close ups that gave you the sense of the tension building up before the guns started firing. The music score was very unique for the Western Genre back in the 1960’s. The actors were mostly Italian and with the makeup and costumes they looked like real Mexican bandits. The Andalusia region of Spain looked very much like Arizona, Texas, and Mexico…except the Saguaro Cactus didn’t grow there. Nothing like this will be made again and that’s why these 3 masterpieces will always be the classics they are.

Funny i never considered listening to the soundtrack by itself. I knew it was excellent but i didn't really appreciate the music for itself until now. Very avant garde. Im even detecting themes that i wouldn't have considered before now. I notice how again and again he keeps returning to this rising sequence of notes, with a building strength. It seems to suggest a climbing, a redemption, a triumph.

Hollywood normally doesn't get it right. Mind you Mr.Star Wars himself GEORGE LUCAS has never won one either. Meanwhile Nicolas Cage, Brie Larson, Emma Stone, Casey Affleck, Jennifer Lawrence, Natalie Portman, Rami Malek, Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman, etc... ALL GOT ONE. Mind you it happens to be the same amount of OSCARS as TRUE GODS like Al Pacino, Robert DeNiro, Gene Hackman, James Stewart and Marlon Brando. So you see. The Oscars don't have any criteria whatsoever. I don't bother with the OSCARS since 1987 When Robert DeNiro was not even nominated for his role in "The Mission" after what many see as one of his most powerful performances.

Born in the mid 50's, listening to these scores on LP's in the 60's; Ennio Morricone was our musical master, I'm sure even Mozart and Beethoven would have agreed that he should be classified of such distinct honor! One day, Sergio Leone made a prank to Ennio, his partner and friend. See, Ennio was both a narcoleptic and a very god-fearing man. So, in a recording session in a huge isolated studio, when Ennio fell asleep on his chair, Sergio made all the orchestra leave the room, went to the sound control, turned off the light and called to Ennio in a deep voice. "Ennio... Ennio... This is your God, Ennio"... The poor guy woke up in a holy panic, and started praying for his acceptance in heaven. Wherever he went now, I hope he still has his friend to prank him like that. That was a good one.

Absolutely, The Good,The Bad and The Ugly changed my point of view about cinema. It seems like we lost the vibe, the true essence of cinema as time progress, most of people now wait for the release of HD version of the film on mobile platform while most of us now just go to the cinema just to have it as a form of social interaction, hangouts, dating etc,... I'd go alone and enjoy a flick by myself any day, because I know it's the movie on the screen that I paid to see, to enjoy the story, the acting and the cinematography, not sitting pointing out faults or trying to get on with my mate cuz it's dark and cozy inside the theatre, my bed and couch do that better!
