So, the US has such shitty internet speeds videos are taking 3 hours to upload :( Guess this is the new norm, unfortunately
@KBH274 жыл бұрын
I think it depends on where or what provider / technology used. Some place in the US actually has like the fastest but most expensive (goes without saying) Fiber-optic internet is the fastest type. maybe a gigabyte per second , give or take Upload or down, not sure which but fast anyway for both

Outstanding review. It’s hard for me to pinpoint what I, and others like so much about invasion. It’s so minimalist and different texturally from anything they’ve done, with maybe some similarities to moments in the album Affinity. I just really like the overall vibe of it. I could certainly see how it wouldn’t be someone’s favorite.

Nice to see your reaction to some more Haken! I love these songs and especially carousel is amongst the top of my haken songs too :). I still found some parts in carousel that weren't perfect for me and I had to think about it for a while, it also has to do with these songs on the album so far as a whole. First things first, I miss the sound of Diego's keyboard on Virus and just his addition in general. Yeah, he adds flavour to some ambient breakdowns like that iconic "prosthetic"-like electronic, but overall his playing is seems pretty much absent. I'm comparing to my other favourite songs like Veil, 1985, The Architect and Falling back to earth. For example what makes 5:05 (YT) transition so great is the harmony of the keyboard, where the high strings collapse down into the breakdown, but it's incredibly faint and I definitely would have liked it more if it was more prominent. I miss the sound of buildups/breakdowns with the keyboard, like the wah wah/jazzy feel from falling back to earth, the 1985 build up in the middle, the chords in The architect or the classic piano sound in Veil. It was already subtle but it added the last ingredient on the older songs that Carousel misses for me. I feel like certain parts would have sound better with versatile instrumentation or.... just more in the mix. Speaking of mix, yeah this is a small nitpick alongside not hearing the keyboard, and maybe the cause of it all. The mix sounds very "dry", you can definitely hear it on Invasion. Kind of the opposite of Devin Townsend where it's a wall of sound. In a lot of ways it sounds awesome, Yeah, the guitar riffs sound very clean and distinctive. I especially like how this album builds a lot on vector and The Architect chorus riff. (Probably the riff where most of their latest albums originate from). Like I wish the chorus of the Architect was mixed like this because people would hear/appreciate it's layers way more. Still I don't like that it feels like guitars+drums are moving the song forward this much. Sometimes I'm missing the balance in dynamics a little bit, like if you put Carousel on after hearing another band like Riverside. The ambience/dynamics from Michal (keyboardist) in Riverside songs is very much in the front, so hearing Carousels drum+guitar would be a bit of a shock after. In conclusion I think it comes down to this: I miss the keyboard, and not because of a sick keyboard solo but mostly for bringing the harmony and ambience to the track: the flavour. Second nitpick is that while I love the song, I feel like the chorus got repeated once too much. I think I would have liked it better if the song didn't have the chorus at the start, the middle and the end again too. Of course the climax where the last chorus goes upwards is absolute perfection like you mentioned, but the transition into the last chorus (slow "architect"-ish melody into full stop into voice into chorus) is the "weakest" part of the song for me. Maybe the only transition I didn't love in this song. It's funny because Veil and Falling back to earth have identical endings (long melodic, full stop, chorus), but here it definitely felt weaker than those. Maybe because the keyboard was missing, (because 5:05 (YT) for me is the best transition and this one is the weakest in the song) maybe because of time measure... I'm not sure why it feels off for me but it just seems a bit rushed writing to me. Long comment on the Carousel. I like the Strain too, felt more like the not super ambitious but solid song of the album. To me it kind of fits on that level of Acid Rain - Riverside you've reacted to a few weeks ago. I like the Strain on the album but it doesn't necessarily stands out for me, it's just a good song. Let me know what you think of my thoughts :).

My favorites are definitely Carousel and Invasion! But I also think prosthetic is a banger, but took a few listens to realize. The Messiah Complex as a whole, is just insanity but not as cohesive and well put together like for example Carousel. But as a Haken Fan the Messiah Complex is a very rewarding listen. Overall Virus maybe is my new favorite Record of Haken mostly because of the strong individual Tracks and how well the Album flows if you listen to it in its entirety!

You should check out Pain of Salvation's nee album Panther. I must admit it is a very divisive album as some if the songs have a more "electronic" sound, but once I really got into it I loved it. Very different from any of their previous albums. ACCELERATOR and RESTLESS BOY both have fantastic drum playthroughs by their drummer Leo. Some great drum figures on those tracks. UNFUTURE would be a good dark track to listen to I think. Otherwise, RESTLESS BOY would be my other pick.

Please pay attention to A Dying Machine by Tremonti. It's mostly alt.metal with a little proggy BUT it's the conceptual album with exciting story. "A Dying Machine tells the story of a Vessel named Stella, that has been programmed by a male consumer, Brennan, to love only him, to fill the void caused by his ex-wife’s death." Music is melodic, masterly performed and really good heavy. Mike's voice is pretty cool and powerful!

Personally I think invasion is a really great strong composition that moves around in just enough spaces to be very fleshed out in under 7 minutes. I love the chorus so much. This songs chorus isn't nearly as strong for me but it's not bad. Carousels great but it's length for what it does just doesn't give me the urge to invest that kind of time into it so repetitively. Btw.. you totally forgot about canary yellow lol

@@captainmorgan1978 Not saying it was repetitive, just not so interesting for me for the track length. Either could have explored more dynamics or something, I don't know. Again not saying it's not bad at all but I don't jam it too often for that reason

I don't know why but I just don't like the sound of interwoven tremolo picking with sustained notes in between bursts of shorter notes. That's the thing that keeps me from being sucked into Haken and listening repeatedly. I loved the end of The Strain but it seems that sound is quite sparse in their music in favour of the heavier sections which I don''t think meshes well with his voice.
