In this video I show you how I made a Google Assistant using a Raspberry Pi. I went a step further and made it look like the HAL 9000 from the science fiction film 2001 A Space Odyssey. For more information check out the article on my website.

As an engineer I spend most of my time problem solving and I think that's an extremely important skill. I have learned that complex problems that may seem impossible at first, can be solved by breaking them down into “byte sized” pieces. I hope that my viewers see my passion and enthusiasm for making things, and that it inspires them to make something that they're excited about.
If you’re new here you may not know that I make a lot of other cool project videos like this. If you enjoy these kind of project videos, please consider subscribing to byte sized. I really appreciate you taking the time to watch this video.

Awesome build, @Zack! It would've been cooler if there was secondary way of triggering HAL remotely. Perhaps a clap sensor (or a software solution) so that you don't have to be physically near it.

Awesome job! It looks great. I think a nice touch would have been to smoke paint the bubble over the LED, like people do with their car tail lights.
@bytesizedengineering
@bytesizedengineering 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the suggestion I'm not familiar with smoke paint. Is that like a frosted finish to help diffuse the LED? From what I can tell in the movie the dome is pretty clear and not frosted.
@NathonDalton
@NathonDalton 2 жыл бұрын
@@bytesizedengineering It's been a while since I've seen the movie so it's very possible that I'm wrong. The paint is a semi-opaque black coating. It diffuses the light a little, but mostly it just blocks a portion of the light, causing a tinting effect. It's like tinted windows, but paint instead of vinyl (or whatever material that is).

I'm surprised no one has made a HAL 9000 voice for these smart speakers. Most of HAL's voice is just a depressed tone so someone should be able to imitate it.

@@bytesizedengineering bear in mind that there is a polyfuse on the micro USB power input circuit. I don't think there is any similar protection on GPIO and I think the polyfuses were removed from the USB type A ports quite early on in the various iterations of the Pi. People used to solder resistors on the circuit to circumvent limitations caused by them if I remember correctly. I think if you go down the route of powering via GPIO then you are best to get a dedicated power HAT. This shows the polyfuse on the Pi 3 circuit: raspberrypi.stackexchange.com/questions/61302/does-raspberry-pi-zero-have-a-polyfuse Next project...TARS and CASE from Interstellar! 😉

Only real touch of class to add to that project was to glaze or otherwise make opaque-ish the inside of the transparent dome, so that the red led would have a more diffuse light effect, adding to the realistic aspect

Redo the LED connection move the whole circuit to the left and you better plug your stuff in instead of having to do all the side connections that you could’ve saved by Just starting an answering Billy D if you had it soldered in not sure if you just used a USB port whatever.. Yes that’s somewhat disappointing by how slow my 3-D printer is to even though it’s supposed to be pretty quick still seems pretty slow when you take four or five hours to do a simple part print out
