@JimboParadox It's a fair point I suppose. But I don't think HAL is evil. I have a couple reasons for that. One of which is of my belief that good and evil simply do not exist. However, he was designed to think logically and that's what he does. You can't fault him for what others made him to be.

...and the desperation and panic that just begun settling in and taking hold of him, as he realizes that he has not just been outsmarted by someone else. But by a damn computer! A machine that humans built to help them. Not to compete with them! A machine that humans always were meant to be the masters of, since they designed them! My goodness.. His troop morale just plummeted, as this realisation settled in, didn't it..? And it's a two headed realisation, that humans no longer are on top of the food chain.. at least not in the very situation Dave finds himself in.. And.. Oh so much more chilling, and demoralizing.. that it was us, ourselves, that purposefully, with clear intent, created this new adversary and master of all other beings.. and thus, we stepped down from our ruling position, to become the slaves of this new master. But there's also quite bit of fighting spirit and determination, that comes over him.. He realizes that it's either him or Hal. Only one can come out on top at the end. So it's like he makes that last ditch attempt.. that last stand, if you will. When he says that exact line.. "Alright Hal, I'll go in through the emergency airlock".. And thus.. I concur! Great actor!

Principal photography as early as 1966. It's like they suspended the social norms of the time and started on a fresh slate and grief tried to simulate a future era. 1960s inevitably leached through in parts but that was tempered by neutral hairstyles and thorough research into what the future held, based on current beliefs. The flat screens were amazingly prophetic and are an example of how they discarded the current norms as an influence. 1984's 2010 follow up didn't learn from that and as a result it looks like a future rooted in the 80s.

I love how HAL considered playing dumb, but then decided he liked Dave enough to at the very least explain his actions and offer him a proper goodbye. The crew responded to HAL's deceit by attempting murder, and HAL in turn tried to beat his would-be assassins to the punch ..... the moment Dave realizes that is so powerful.

It's almost like that moment in _Blade Runner_ where Roy Batty saves Deckard. In both scenes, they (both Roy Batty and HAL 9000) rise above their basic programming. Which marks the onset of their humanity in my view. Importantly, they give a nod to someone else's mind despite an imminent death. Death makes such acts appear irrational to simple machines (such as most "humans").

In the movie's sequel they found that Hal had been given orders to hide to the purpose of the mission from the crew, even though his base programming told him not to lie to humans. The conflicting orders basically led to him having the computer equivalent of a nervous breakdown, which is why he made the mistake that made Dave and the other guy doubt him.

It seems to be the case he is as is implied in his reply a game. His sarcasm and cold and callous voice. He is inspiring fear. He reads him and knows EXACTLY what he has been planning to do it the entire time he became "aware" supercomputers/AI are built to decide in moments in seconds. This was to show his independent autonomy and control. AI's need to be able to act instantly as they must react to a situation. Now if you get them into a loop that they can't answer they will be "processing forever. But that's not so easy especially now. Very hard to" trick"it was like your angry partner in a chair and you come in the door stinking of alcohol or whatever and you call out to your partner. He was annoyed or he was showing his independence also inspiring fear. We likely all know that feeling. He/she hears you loud and clear and knows exactly what they want to say they wa t you to "work for it" or see if you openly admit to your error. This is what I believe to be the case here.

@feralcatbrothers
@feralcatbrothers 5 жыл бұрын
@@DarthRushy In my opinion, "2010" the book was good. Like a lot of Arthur C. Clarke's novels it does tend to wander off subject from time to time (and I say that as a long time fan of Mr. Clarke's work). Nevertheless, if "2010" the movie was more like "2010" the book, it would have been awesome. Unfortunately "they" weaken it by leaving out the story of the Chinese and their rocket to Europa while adding that unnecessary anti-war babble in the message after Jupiter exploded ("Use them together, use them in peace"). Again, just my opinions. "2061" was kind of a weak story and would not make a decent movie - IMHO. "3001" is very good, a fitting conclusion to the entire series and I recommend it to you. It would make an excellent movie if the script follows the book (and I did read a few years ago there was a plan to make it into a movie - but that's as far as things went.....so far). Sadly, in this day and age, "science fiction" movies have to have monsters and mayhem added, and that would ruin yet another good book made into a movie. Again, all this is my opinion, and your mileage may vary.
@DarthRushy
@DarthRushy 5 жыл бұрын
Was the Chinese arc that significant? It's been a long time since I read the book. As for the film, apart from the dated Cold War allegories and lack of forward-thinking in terms of technology(the "laptop" Floyd uses on the beach was hilarious) I think it still holds up well. And it was great to see Keir Dullea and Douglas Rain back.

HAL is literally going insane throughout the latter half the film. It's revealed later that the government has instructed HAL to deceive the crew and hide the true objective of the mission. Wikipedia sums it all up wonderfully: "he was constructed for "the accurate processing of information without distortion or concealment", yet his orders, directly from Dr. Heywood Floyd at the National Council on Astronautics, required him to keep the discovery of the Monolith TMA-1 a secret for reasons of national security. This contradiction created a "Hofstadter-Moebius loop", reducing HAL to paranoia. Therefore, HAL made the decision to kill the crew, thereby allowing him to obey both his hardwired instructions to report data truthfully and in full, and his orders to keep the monolith a secret. In essence: if the crew were dead, he would no longer have to keep the information secret."

Such a still, quiet sense of tension and dread, where we finally see Dave emote and lose his temper. His sense of isolation is palpable. Though he doesn’t know that HAL has killed the scientists yet, you still get the feeling that he’s suddenly the only human here, hundreds of millions of miles from home. I love how he ponders for just a moment after this scene and then puts his plan into action, knowing the risk is his only course.

What I admire most about Dave is how he handles the situation. While he is upset of the situation deep down (an observant viewer can notice this from his subtle facial expressions, his tone of voice, etc.), he remains calm and professional. With his friend/partner dead and an A.I. gone rogue and trying to kill him, he could have very easily panicked or lose his cool. While I know that astronauts and other people who take up risky tasks are supposed to be level-headed regardless of the situation, it is still admirable for someone like Dave to handle such a crisis with calmness.

Minor detail but HAL didn't go rogue, he was merely following instructions. I don't think HAL's voice is heartless or soulless. He merely sounds resigned, to me.

That's the voice of a soon to be ex-wife presenting an unassuming man the divorce papers because she's not happy anymore. Men, don't get married and you won't be like Dave dealing with HAL.

This movie is timeless because it is not contaminated by the pop culture of the time period in which it was made. A valuable lesson if you are to make movies that are not looked upon by future generations as bad examples of the worst excesses of the times they were made in.

Not to mention the extreme care Kubrick took to make the film as scientifically accurate as he could manage, back when most movie-makers were pretty blasé about such things...

Heya! I totally agree with you, but I feel you may have analysed further into this film than I have (I only saw it once when I was younger and really need to buy it and watch it again!) so how do you feel directors etc can avoid contaminating it with pop culture? Just by making everything in keeping, nothing too flashy, make things look realistic, and avoid random buttons etc on things? Keep the tech simplistic, and the lighting relevant to what it's for (no flashing lights that don't need to be there!). Where do you think the boundary between this and overdone CGI lies? For example, in the recent "Oblivion" it had what could be considered (by the above) "timeless" sets etc, but it didn't feel quite as real...
