"Lookin' to Get Out" is one of my favor movies. It is about winning, even though you are losing. But we have only one" Shampoo" , one " Being there". That is, because of the essential things about Ashby's filmmaking/point of wiev, that was so unique, that any copy/remaking of these movies will end in failure. The same you can say about "8 Million Ways to Die", very bad movie, because the unprejudiced world of Ashby´s cinema doesn´t fit the kind of these ordinary movies like this movie. Others directors were/are very better at this type of movies, but not Asby.

I like Second-Hand Hearts! I think it is a good movie. I like those characters! The movie is like spending time with those characters on their journey. I do not get why SHH gets so panned!

Hal Ashby was never drug dependent, & was never unreliable as a director. Read Nick Dawson's biography of Ashby. Mr Blumensev's remarks on Lookin' To Get Out are entirely subjective, never once does he point to the film to give any examples of why it is Ashby's "worst film", all he can say is that is just didn't interest him. The cast are terrific, the film is hilarious, Bert Remsen's scam at the end is a great surprise climax. John Voight's crazed and clueless sociopath is a classic unsympathetic yet fascinating character. There's nothing about the film that doesn't work. If Mr Blumensev can only point to Angelina Jolie's screen debut as the film's one redeeming quality, so much has been lost on him that he might reconsider his public stance as a film critic, which he is obviously not cut out for. Lookin' To Get Out continues to hold up very well as a great screwball comedy.

In my opinion Oliver Stone is a better screenwriter then Robert Towne and has been Oscar nominated for writing screenplays 6 times.. which is more times then Towne has been nominated. Thank you for making this video about Hal Ashby. Coming Home is a Masterpiece.

Bob Towne's CHINATOWN screenplay is a stunning masterpiece. Oliver Stone has never done anything that comes close to that.

Really strange attempts at providing "evidence" for his 80's downfall. Pointing out that the film, while released in 1980, was (a-ha!) made in 1979, and THAT'S why it's still decent! Whatever year the film was made does not affect the work so much so that it being made in '79 is responsible for its being decent. Again, later, you say that you watch the director's cut, not the theatrical cut, and ("scarier still") didn't like it. You claim that this "says a lot about the director's true downfall". Not in any capacity does your opinion of the director's cut of a film or really any film say anything about a director's downfall. Also: in no way should a director's cut be expected to be better than a studio cut. You're asking a lot of us viewers, to view this downfall as fact, based solely off your opinions. These opinions, which, further still, are based off other "facts", such as the director's cut supposed advantage over the studio cut. It's a very mind-bending logic at play here. Extremely presumptive. Incredibly narcissistic. Absolutely fascinating. Five stars.

well it's not a secret that his most famous and highly regarded films are from the 70s and no one even ever talks about his 80s films + most of them have bad reviews, so that's the basis of Ashby's "downfall" this video essay explores.

Just watched 8 Million Ways To Die. It's definitely a proto Tarantino film who loves the movie. The wonderful snowcone and Gaudi scene could of fit in Reservoir Dogs Pulp Jackie Brown like glove and warehouse stand off is pretty much Reservoir Dogs. Would of been interesting to had seen Ashby edit of the movie which harmed the flow of the released version even though there is some beautiful moments like the kidnapping car chase scene Andy Garcia character is a mix between Nicholas Cage, Al Pacino and Bronson Pinchot is a brilliant hammy performance Again if this film had came 10 years later the Tarantino sub genre which it was inspired from to create it, would looked after it well instead of it being the lost 80s film that it now is.
