Just did the math, you'd need around 1,000 weekly paychecks to be able to afford a house where I live at around minimum wage. Which means he would be around 60 years old or so if he were to put around half of every paycheck into savings to buy a house (which would mean no interest). Statistically his parents would not be alive by then. He should probably change his plan!
@UmmYeahOk
@UmmYeahOk 2 жыл бұрын
@@undefined6947 when this first aired, that house was probably worth $100k-200k, but most likely $100k-150k giving the age. Affordable housing/starter homes were easier to come by back then. At the time, minimum wage was about $5.15, but there were child labor laws in place preventing minors from working full time. This was also right before the housing bubble bursted, so they were giving home loans to just about anyone because what’s the risk? The profit is in buyers who CANT afford it. Besides, banks would just sell off the loan anyway, so it wasn’t their risk. Now then, I actually worked a similar job as Lois back in those days. I left a $8.15/hr grocery cashier job in 2002, for something very similar in the same town on the same road for $7/hr. After four years, I was making $8.45/hr. We had a similar sized home, though nicer because it was brand new. $120k in 2003, sold for $155k in 2011. We could afford it because we were dual income and had no children. That was Malcolms parents problem. They were of a generation who had it even easier than we did, but were careless, and had 4 children, eventually 5, but ultimately only had to care for 4. THAT is what broke them. The house could have been paid off, but utilities and having to pay for 4 children is just too much, ignore any property taxes they may also have.

If they ever do a reboot, they should show the boys finding out about the second bathroom. In addition, it’ll also be perfect for when Lois finds out about how they tricked her into thinking she had cancer so she wouldn’t pay attention when she signs their report cards. And Dewey can then mention the thing about her friend Jenny which is blackmail against Francis. I just think it would be interesting to see an episode when a lot of secrets are revealed.

It is very harsh and golden and thats about exactly how 90s and 00s cameras tookin sunlight. (i believe there is soe interior lights to light up the rest of the room so the contrast isnt so huge, but they are subtle and it makes the scene so much more realistic because thats how our brains are set to percieve light and angles of a room

I liked that this family wasnt so much poor but that they were stretched thin. The mom was pulled in 10 different directions. The dad is going through a midlife crisis. You see the progression of the family as they have more kids. Things become more and more chaotic. To a point where Malcolm has to work as a janitor at Harvard because there was no help from the family and surely the government isnt going to help a nuclear family like this one. Nvm that Malcolm is an absolute genius and that we all know how easy it is for the well connected to get into the Ivy League. Its a good social commentary of 50 percent of American families.

@@TheNinja94a not really art analysis, just what they wished a character would have done. Wouldn't have fit within her character or the broader changes she goes through during the show and doesn't take into account the reasonable perspective that underlies her overbearing tendencies. Their children are chaotic messes and the family is perpetually having issues with money. From her point of view, these jobs help ease both of those burdens while also giving important experience to the kids. She doesn't run it by Hal because he's a mess when it comes to parenting which is shown countless times including when he admits as much himself. She doesn't run it by the kids because, from her point of view, Reese has always needed to be told instead of lead and she wanted to keep an eye on Malcolm (admitted by her in a later episode) which she knew he wouldn't like that. Personal feelings on the character's actions don't really matter (in analysis) if they aren't grounded in some sort of critique. Her character is playing the role she was written into very well in this scene. A strict mother trying to keep their extremely dysfunctional family afloat. She absolutely has flaws, horrific ones that can contend with any of the other characters'. These flaws are born from her circumstance and personality, which makes them believable and relatable. You aren't supposed to enjoy everything each character does, but understanding why they do it and how they change over time to do things differently is one of the reasons this show has held up for so long. There are numerous moments in the show where she shows another side of her motherhood, the extremely loving and kind side, which give us a glimpse that she's doing this all from those emotions (as well as the many flashbacks where she had to harden up in order to keep Francis from destroying the house). Surely any analysis of a character should be based on the broader picture rather than a one minute scene of them, yeah? No ill will to the og commenter or to you either. Have a nice day ☺️

you dont understand what its like to live life with stretched finances especially with people who grew up probably in even harder circumstances, and room for communication skills and empathy were simply not available. Those people learn to survive the hard way, and being polite often meant being ignored. They become driving and forceful to help themselves and those around them succeed. Lois only did what she felt she had to do out of love even if it may not have been the most ideal answer. The harsh truth of life is that pure freedom is an extremely rare privilege.

Management works on the principle of pushing people till they break/can no longer meet deadlines *AT ALL* relying on those few employees that will *go the extra mile* by coming in hours early/working hours late to make up the shortfall. They don't see that as an achievement of the person putting in the long hours, at all. They 100% see that as their successful management style. Don't be that person making life hell for your colleagues, unless of course you are part of a real team and your work directly benefits yourself and your team (owner/operator, indies etc).

@@asmosisyup2557 It's difficult because your manager has their own manager, at least in a large business. If you're an engineer or a technician or in a technical role aka. not management, then your immediate boss is likely only in junior or middle management. Their entire job relies on getting more "work" out of the teams that they manage. If they can't do so, then their ass is on the line. Of course there's something to be said about good management techniques and the importance of team moral, but at the end of the day when push comes to shove the numbers need to be going up. They, just like you, are a product of a system increasingly driven by numbers, efficiency, and profits.
