The quote from Hal just feels like a tone-deaf quote, a slap in the face to all the Yankees fans that, for whatever reason, live paycheck to paycheck, just getting by, while a billionaire owner cries about payroll, when he is the guy who agreed to these deals being signed

As a Die hard Yankees fan, I loved the quote. How much more money should he spend? He spent $300m last year, for what? We sat home in October! If I was the owner I’d be pissed! And I wouldnt spend another dime. I’d make the players perform to their contracts. Not add more payroll to cover it up. I think it’s ridiculous to expect him to just throw money in every which direction. I don’t care how much money the Yankees are worth, I’d force our beloved captain to learn to hit in the postseason!

The owners were mad that commissioner Peter Ueberoth, whom they chose, made some very player friendly deals, and they got hot and fired him. They wanted blood. They got one of their own to be the boss and wanted to stick it to the players. In the CBA negotiations they demanded a salary cap, and that no deal could be had without one. It was a necessity. Players ended up striking. Owners didn't think it would last. But media and fans ended up siding with players. Owners finally caved and agreed to the original terms without a cap. But later, the CBT was added as an alternative to a hard cap. Owners said this helps everyone, it keeps some high end costs lower and will force teams to regulate their salaries. It didn't quite work that way, but mostly it has kept mid-level teams from joining the deep end because of you try to spend massively and it fails, you get hit twice. The tax isn't going to keep salaries from going up. Because every time someone sets a new bar, the next player who is equitable, says I deserve more because X, and the dance is that you have to pay more than before. But where does it end?
@lovesgucci1
@lovesgucci1 26 күн бұрын
@@dgrblue4162 You’re talking about a salary cap but there need to be a floor salary because cheap teams feel that they don’t need to spend to win but still get money from teams that pay the luxury tax. Not only do those deadbeat owners get money for not spending on salary but there isn’t regulations for what the money is used for (like putting money back into the team)

exactly. that’s why before this season i said idc what we do in the season. ik we’re most likely gona win because i mean look at our division but we need tos we it transfer to the playoffs. robert has said it’s his job and he’s working to get them in “playoff form or shape” and yet past to years we get to postseason and they forget how to play and just fall apart. i’m tired of dave robert’s and his constant horrible decisions. he’s a great personality manager don’t think anyone can deny that but he’s a horrible game manager. majority of his moves are horrible and mistakes. he constantly blows games and is just a plain bad manager. “but his records and winning the division” yeah like 15 other teams can win this division it’s pretty bad. and also any manager can do that with the talent he’s given at disposal. so many managers are canned and not given a chance with 100x less talent and worse situations yet don’t get any where near as much slack as dave. depending how this postseason goes they really need to start throwing applications out there if they haven’t already.

The CBT thresholds should not be drastically changed. Its purpose is clearly stated, “competitive balance”. The threshold is $237 mill this year. The majority of the league can’t afford to go that high in the first place. And you are only taxed on the dollars you spend above that. You can’t allow the Yankees/Dodgers to have $500 million payrolls while other teams are $150 or $100. Nobody seems to comprehend that although these owners are wealthy, it is not unlimited for the small markets. Trev is a player and he wants players to make as much as possible so I get that. There has to be a balance for a good league to exist. CBT is the best of both worlds. Higher revenue teams still have the advantage since they have more to work with but once they get to the 237 cutoff it costs them more per dollar so it can’t get so out of hand.

While I’m not arguing in favor of Steinbrenner, there’s so much more payroll than just players. Event manager salaries don’t factor into that (Counsell’s record $40m comes to mind). There’s all the office, marketing, financial, scouting, training, equipment, stadium, maintenance, MiLB investments, and so much more that all have to get paid out. A $232m public payroll can easily be a $600m franchise payroll.

Can't believe how hard Plouffe went to defend a billionaire owner. It's not transparency from Steinbrenner, it's delusional thinking on a billionaire's part. The CBT thresholds are not the problem, it's owners like John Fisher and, frankly, Steinbrenner who are cruising in their yachts and flying in their private jets claiming to be poor while charging through the nose to go to baseball games and asking cities to subsidize their businesses that make hundreds of millions if not billions a year. It's absolutely ridiculous and trying to defend Steinbrenner's brain-dead quote is really wild.

Lol I like the grinder mentality but it seems completely counterintuitive. "The mariners were the winningest team in history, they clearly grinded all super grindy-like to 116 wins"..."yeah but what'd they do at the end, they didn't win"....."so that just goes to show... keep...trying hard..?" He just used the team that apparently grinded the hardest and lost as a reason for why you have to keep grinding, even though we're only 1/3 into the season? If anything the 01 Ms show you that "no matter how hard you ever grind you can still be fucked in the playoffs because that's life and that's baseball"

Yeah it’s all complete coach speak and word salad. And it’s hilarious they talked about it for that long when everyone knows the playoffs is a crapshoot anyway.

As a Phillies fan, I'm so sick and tired of the .500 talking point, can we please stop with it Rose? With the schedule the way it is, every team in baseball plays one another, so the Phillies are taking care of business AS THEY SHOULD BE, and as Plouffe has brought up on the show previously. In addition, many of the teams we played were at .500 or a game or two over .500 (our May series vs the Padres and Giants both come to mind) before the Phillies kicked their teeth in, and therefor made them under .500.

The family spending their money to go to a game is spending that much because of the players. Owners aren't going to not get their cut, that's how owning things works. The players don't make more money because we spend more money, we spend more money because they make more money. Sports prices have not risen at the same rate of inflation as everything else. The more they want to make, the more we have to spend. Anyone who is mad at the prices should blame the players. On the other hand, we still pay, so they are actually worth the amount they make. Baseball isn't a necessary commodity, so whatever people pay for it is what it's worth. As an economist I agree that they should get paid what they get paid. As a fan who can't afford to go to as many games as I used to, I think these guys are being pretty greedy, and forgetting how they get paid.

Sorry Trev, but Steinbrenner has not been transparent. Just making a claim isn't transparency. If you want to be transparent, show us your books. And I don't love the tax thresholds and the fact that some owners refuse to spend money to be competitive, but if you remove them the small market teams that are trying are going to get reamed in free agency. And I don't know how you can say that it doesn't matter if the Yankees make a profit this year. The two most important things in business are profitability and cash flow. Steinbrenner can't say the payroll is unsustainable if he's turning a profit. That's the definition of sustainable. It really comes down to the fact that he wants to get more stars without being taxed for it. It's that simple. The Yankees will turn a big profit YoY with the tax threshold or not. They just want to put the most competitive team out there without being taxed.

Another Yankee fan backing Chris. Hal has been so tone deaf. No Yankee fan wants to hear Hal complaining when the team hasn't been to the WS since 2009. I don't care if they made stupid decisions and are getting hit hard by CBT. Chris is right. That's not what you say to the public. Guess what, we know that. The only thing Hal should be saying and doing is preparing a championship team.

If baseball removes the tax then the dodgers and yankees will have zero restrictions.... how is that good for baseball? Its shocking how the NBA went from having no parody, to having total parody in just a few years. Because they figured out the cap. Baseball will lack competitiveness even more if they remove taxes. How can american sports fans think having no cap is a good thing.
