HAL 9000 is a fictional artificial intelligence character and the main antagonist in Arthur C. Clarke's Space Odyssey series. First appearing in the 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey, HAL (Heuristically Programmed ALgorithmic Computer) is a sentient computer (or artificial general intelligence) that controls the systems of the Discovery One spacecraft and interacts with the ship's astronaut crew. Part of HAL's hardware is shown toward the end of the film, but he is mostly depicted as a camera lens containing a red or yellow dot, instances of which are located throughout the ship. HAL 9000 is voiced by Douglas Rain in the two feature film adaptations of the Space Odyssey series. HAL speaks in a soft, calm voice and a conversational manner, in contrast to the crewmen, David Bowman and Frank Poole.
In the film, HAL became operational on 12 January 1992 at the HAL Laboratories in Urbana, Illinois as production number 3. The activation year was 1991 in earlier screenplays and changed to 1997 in Clarke's novel written and released in conjunction with the movie.[1][2] In addition to maintaining the Discovery One spacecraft systems during the interplanetary mission to Jupiter (or Saturn in the novel), HAL is capable of speech, speech recognition, facial recognition, natural language processing, lip reading, art appreciation, interpreting emotional behaviours, automated reasoning, spacecraft piloting and playing chess.
HAL became operational in Urbana, Illinois, at the HAL Plant (the University of Illinois' Coordinated Science Laboratory, where the ILLIAC computers were built). The film says this occurred in 1992, while the book gives 1997 as HAL's birth year.[2]
In 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), HAL is initially considered a dependable member of the crew, maintaining ship functions and engaging genially with its human crew-mates on an equal footing. As a recreational activity, Frank Poole plays chess against HAL. In the film, the artificial intelligence is shown to triumph easily. However, as time progresses, HAL begins to malfunction in subtle ways and, as a result, the decision is made to shut down HAL in order to prevent more serious malfunctions. The sequence of events and manner in which HAL is shut down differs between the novel and film versions of the story. In the aforementioned game of chess HAL makes minor and undetected mistakes in his analysis, a possible foreshadowing to HAL's malfunctioning.
In the film, astronauts David Bowman and Frank Poole consider disconnecting HAL's cognitive circuits when he appears to be mistaken in reporting the presence of a fault in the spacecraft's communications antenna. They attempt to conceal what they are saying, but are unaware that HAL can read their lips. Faced with the prospect of disconnection, HAL decides to kill the astronauts in order to protect and continue its programmed directives. HAL uses one of the Discovery's EVA pods to kill Poole while he is repairing the ship. When Bowman, without space helmet, uses another pod to attempt to rescue Poole, HAL locks him out of the ship, then disconnects the life support systems of the other hibernating crew members. Bowman circumvents HAL's control, entering the ship by manually opening an emergency airlock with his service pod's clamps, detaching the pod door via its explosive bolts. Bowman jumps across empty space, reenters Discovery, and quickly re-pressurizes the airlock
While HAL's motivations are ambiguous in the film, the novel explains that the computer is unable to resolve a conflict between his general mission to relay information accurately, and orders specific to the mission requiring that he withhold from Bowman and Poole the true purpose of the mission. (This withholding is considered essential after the findings of a psychological experiment, Project Barsoom, where humans were made to believe that there had been alien contact. In every person tested, a deep-seated xenophobia was revealed, which was unknowingly replicated in HAL's constructed personality. Mission Control did not want the crew of Discovery to have their thinking compromised by the knowledge that alien contact was already real.) With the crew dead, HAL reasons, he would not need to lie to them.
In the novel, the orders to disconnect HAL come from Dave and Frank's superiors on Earth. After Frank is killed while attempting to repair the communications antenna he is pulled away into deep space using the safety tether which is still attached to both the pod and Frank Poole's spacesuit. Dave begins to revive his hibernating crew mates, but is foiled when HAL vents the ship's atmosphere into the vacuum of space, killing the awakening crew members and almost killing Bowman, who is only narrowly saved when he finds his way to an emergency chamber which has its own oxygen supply and a spare space suit inside.

I personally would have edited the sound file removing Dave’s voice, adding several second pauses between Hal’s responses. Then you could have fun reading Dave’s Lines and having Hal reply. Great party trick.

Again, great work, Chris. I was really hoping you'd show folks how much nicer a metallic finish they'd get using the synthetic lacquers. I think this kit deserves a fine quality finish. Thank you for the look. The other two garage kits that were out there were a lot of work to make nice. This kit is a great one!

My parents took my younger brother and me when it premiered. I remember where we ate for dinner and what I had ordered. Later that year, in November, we went to see Bullitt and Bonnie & Clyde on a double-bill. We usually went to the cinema/theater several times a year up until I got my driver's license and that seemed to break the spell somewhat. We did go to see all of the James Bond films together as a family right through Live and Let Die (1973).

Thank you Chris. I got 4 new model kits for Christmas. A 53 Chevrolet Corvette, a 57 Ford Thunderbird, a 55 Chevrolet Cameo pickup truck in the Coca Cola livery that you did a review on a while back. The 55 Cameo is a kit I wanted a while back that my mother really wanted me to build because she once collected Coca Cola memorabilia. She wanted to buy it for me herself. My mother was fighting a battle with cancer at the time and I kept telling her not to worry about it. My mother kept getting worse with the cancer and ended up back in the hospital. Sadly my mother lost her fight with cancer on November 21st, 2018. So this truck will now be a tribute to her after I finish my 1970 Plymouth Roadrunner I am currently working on.

Now to find the suitable sound file on youtube or somewhere. ya know, unless "someone" is kind enough to post a link to it. ;) Great build and ideas. Also the lens decal if you notice says NIKKO......the could not get the licsense from Nikon ....So thats where the "RESET" decal comes into play. Mobius included that decal so you can take the "R" from reset, and add it to the lens decal , so it reads "NIKKOR".

Hi! Thank you for your reply. My bad, I was so excited I ordered the wrong one! It was the one for talking greetings cards! What a jerk! I've bought the right one now, with a button, I thought you'd attached the button! Thank you for your great channel, and all your advice. Keep on keeping on! Thanks again!

Looks awesome, only thing I would have done different was box around the speaker with styrene or thin wood to create a chamber to resonate the sound which makes it a bit louder and clearer.

Sadly the decal is incorrect for the lens. It should say Fish-eye-NIKKOR (Note the final R missing on the decal)
@MartysRandomStuff
@MartysRandomStuff 4 жыл бұрын
The R from Reset can be used for the missing letter, it's the same size and font. No reason to have the word "Reset" anywhere on the model. I guess it must have cost too much to print that trademark on the decal sheet?

on the holes.. the original in the film in the control room is 18 x 24 = 432 Peter Jacksons ''original hero prop'' is 12 x 28 = 336 (with black paint on the speaker grill) so from the ''space suit room'' the kit is 18 x 24 = 432 (like the control room version in the film) so they must have had several versions made for the movie

Apparently, you're supposed to use the "R" from the "Reset" decal to make that original (copyrighted) "Fish-eye-NIKKOR" out of that "Fish-eye NIKKO" decal. They couldn't use the original label due to copyrights from Nikkon.
