Haldir is not pessimistic. He is saddened by self-interest and the consequent inability to live in harmony as part of the whole without harm. If you are immortal, if you have seen and tried everything at some point, then you will recognise the senselessness of greed, self-interest, striving for power and deep peace and boundless love, esteem and respect for all fellow creatures, no matter how small, will become greater and greater, if you do not go mad. Be sad together or laugh together... Look down on no one, exclude no one, all are one, one is all. You can learn that from the elves, I think. Tolkien with his eternal battles and his lack of humor... boring. May Starlights Blessing allways finds you. All of you. I want the elves to come back.

Interesting ideas. greed and self-interest cannot make much sense as they are signs of inner problems, more like a sickness than a choice to act in a certain way. This world has too many of such problems for the elves to live in it. Survive, perhaps, but you cannot imagine how horrible that would be for them.
