I think it's because she probably doesn't care for having her name under a contract from some big label, recording music on a time schedule to make money for them. She probably couldn't care less about being 'famous'. She does covers of songs from a bygone era. She adheres to her own taste and style: Jazzy, almost classical.. I don't detect a single hint of commercialism in her. And that's probably why people like you and me love her :)

@@EnGee23 I think the backing arrangements and overall production have a lot to do with it. Backing arrangements tend to be busy, and Haley's voice tends to be put into a wall of sound. A voice like hers is so superb and she does such things with it that it should be standing well out from the backings. Her first two albums sound rather Pop, and good though they are, and some of the songs are very good, she doesna come through as well as she does on her 3rd album What's That Sound which was recorded on old 60's apparatus and is largely analogue. Apart from her distinctive rasps and growls, the warmth of her voice comes through so well, and it is all amazingly clear. It makes you wonder what the hell has happened to recording production and sound engineers. Yet aProbably half of them should be lined up and shot! Generally speaking, the PMJ backing arrangements are subdued and "back" her, instead of competing with her.

Voice doesn't mean that much. The original vocals paired with the original recording is much better than this performance even though she has a technically better singing voice. Even Jim Carrey's performance is better than this one. He had raw emotion. What you want out of a song like this is emotion. You want to feel it in your stomach. You don't do that with this performance.

Yes. I have the recorded version but I love this too. Most of these singers today can’t sing, plus they have them dancing around ( probably to distract you from their awful singing). They have to use auto tune because even the best singer would have a hard time singing & dancing on stage while performing. They all look & sound the same. It's a great cover. She should have won Idol that year,, she was literally the only reason to watch that year. She gave us all a hint at what she could do with "covers" as she came out and made each of the "covers" she did every week on that show, her own. What she did with "House of the Rising Sun" that year, is still one of the show's all time classic moments. As far as this being her "best" PMJ track? Lol, I can't pick one. I really like her 7 Nation Army, and her Black Hole Sun, is so different and creative, and I'm such a Chris Cornell fan, I would love to know if he heard it, before he died, and his thoughts regarding her rendition.
