There was a massive voting block of white adolescent females that all power-voted together every season of American Idol to pick the winners. Hence, in Haley's season, they voted for Scotty McCreary, cause he was a cute white guy with a guitar and for Lauren Alaina because, well, they were shipping those two contestants together romantically as lovebirds. Which meant Haley finished third. However, had American Idol not allowed power voting, Haley would have easily won the show in a landslide because she was by far the most talented contestant on the show that season and one of the most talented contestants to ever appear on American Idol. Young, white, female southern voters. Aside from Candice Glover and Just Sam (whose VERY deserved wins I’m absolutely convinced were orchestrated by the producers to ensure the show’s legitimacy wasn’t thrown into the dustbin of history), every winner after season SIX has been white, and only ONE has been female (Maddie Poppe). If that doesn’t tell you everything you need to know about the voting demographic… and what’s wrong with AI’s voting methods… There have been FIVE Black winners out of TWENTY contestants. And THREE of them were in the first six years, before Simon left and the audience dropped off. I’m sorry, but the racism was SO obvious in the public voting, there simply isn’t anything else to say. Candice had to be SAVED. TWICE. She was in the bottom over and over again. It was ridiculous. And where has her career gone? Though that’s hardly unique to her. There is more success among non-winners than winners, percentage-wise… But not for the Black contestants, other than one notable exception. And that speaks to a systemic racism issue that I’d better shut up about before I really start ranting… My point got lost. What was it? Oh yeah: the AI voting system couldn’t be counted on for anything except to consistently pick white male singers. 🥴
