Haley Reinhart - Three Thoughts on...Being an Old Soul.
Haley Reinhart is one of those rare vocalists who sounds convincing singing almost any genre of music. She made her mark ranking third in the 2011 'American Idol' competition, and since, she's made sure there's a wild diversity to her choice of material. Jazzy vamps through White Stripes and Britney Spears, a stab at hippie-era jewels "White Rabbit" and "Light My Fire," even a sassy update of the Kinks' "Sunny Afternoon." Reinhart is a pro at personalizing classic songs - for proof, check her latest album, 'What's That Sound'. When she stopped by Vevo for her 'Three Thoughts' chat, the 28-year-old explained one of the reasons why: she's an old soul. "I've really been drawn to various eras, and I've had a cool feeling of familiarity [with several of them.] The Victorian age, the smokey jazz clubs, and of course up to the '60s and '70s - I live and breathe that stuff today. I sometimes think I was born in the wrong time." Find out more as Haley discusses being an old soul.

Being born in 1950, I have always felt, since the first time I heard you sing, that you were definitely born in the wrong time. . .it is so rare to find someone as young as you who can cover so many decades of music, so well. . .whether jazz or rock and roll, or 40's through 70's. . .you voice is incredible, each song is truly filled with the soul of each era. . .continue to do what you do as you do it so well ❤❤👍👍

I was born in the fifties and I also feel misplaced in time and place. The late 50s and 60s music are also my favs and I always felt so at home working in the San Francisco area even though I’m from the south. I’m not sure I can get the idea of soul old or new around my head, but I feel something in my gut that touches me when I hear Haley interpreting/enhancing that genre. Very cool! Personally, I’m glad I didn’t have to be an adult then and I get to listen to this very special and talented lady sing and perform that music now. Best of both worlds to me. 2023 and I am a new big fan. Keep on charging Haley!

You're right. She has the "x" factor or the "it" factor in spades, but to capitalize on it, she needs to sign a deal with a big major record label and until she decides to take the plunge, then she will never get any bigger than she is now today. It's up to her, the ball is in her court.

You're so awesome. Im gonna get your original music, but first I have to let go of some of the time spent listening to some of your covers. The one I'm stuck on the most is Oops! I have heard Brittany doing it before, but it never grabbed me. But one time hearing your pmj version from the studio(living room, i understand), and I can't stop listening to it. You make me believe it was straight from a speakeasy, and that it is really your song, and Brittany made an attempt at a cover of it. This is where I see your soul come out the most. Also Seven Nation, and of all things White Rabbit to a slightly lesser extent. Back to Oops. Your talent and beauty, along with the set, made this so believable. It was more like a movie, or really like a very high quality taping from the 30s. It is perfection. Add to your list of talents "actress". I adore you. 🥀🥀🥀❤🥀🥀🥀

Music is likely the only thing, that knows "no time", meaning that, yes, it can have a date of production, but if it is good music, it becomes timeless. Just look at what we call, classical music, the pop music of 17th/18th/19th century, people still enjoy that, or opera, 20's jazz, 20's blues, big-band, folk, soul, rock etc etc, if its good, then there is no expiration date, it will always grab people, and that, is what your music does too :)

I’ve become such a big fan of yours. No lie, you’re my favorite current female artist. You remind me so much of myself it’s actually kinda funny. I love how you’re a true artist and not just some lame popstar. You put real soul and feeling into your songs and I love it. Especially in these days when stuff like that is so rare. I would genuinely love to write a song with you one day. But anyway, thank you for all of the music you’ve given us. Keep up the good work and next time you’re in Dallas, shoot me a message and we can write a song if you’d like to. And you can have it too, id just really like to write with you one day. I think you’d add a nice touch to the kind of music I write. They’re very similar styles but you have a voice of an angel and whenever you use falsettos it just takes me to another place. I absolutely love it. Keep it up.

I was just watching one of your covers - "LoveFool" by The Cardigans, and I was thinking how much he would have loved you. He died in May after about a year in a nursing home, with dementia, during the pandemic, so... Anyway, he'd have thought the world of your singing, and your stage presence. I'm surprised that she didn't mention the influence that pmj obviously had on her career. I'm not sure I would have ever seen her or had her subscribed in my KZbin If I had not seen her originally perform some of those fantastic songs on postmodern jazz. Does she not feel that they influenced her at all and helped with her career at all? Seems that question leaves quite a gap in her presentation. I love her to death but would have never tied in without PMJ

Agree, it goes both ways. However, it's usually the artist when talking about their career at least references the multiple steps, and generally the most important ones. I still thought it was a confusing omission.
@poppycock288
@poppycock288 5 жыл бұрын
@mawsley9...you're exactly right, Haley's brief association with PMJ where she quickly became their main attraction played a huge part in the success of PMJ. It was a brief marriage made in heaven between the two of them at the right time and it was a very symbiotic mutually beneficial relationship for both of them. Now it's time for Haley to move on to newer and far greater things.
@poppycock288
@poppycock288 5 жыл бұрын
@Tim Grace...Haley's love for jazz music actually goes back to her high school days back when she was the featured singer for her award-winning high school jazz band. Which not only garnered high accolades here in America but also traveled abroad to Europe and played in two of the biggest jazz festivals in Europe, the Umbria Jazz Festival and the Montreaux Jazz Festival. Although Haley grew up a rocker chick with her rocker parents in and around Chicago, she also has jazz music coursing through her veins as well because of those high school days. Which is why she says, " I don't think anything is too far outside the lines, as long as I can handle it". As she is indicating that she plans to always do Jazz music and Rock music for the rest of her life. Haley has much love and appreciation for Scott Bradlee and PMJ and she will always remain the best of friends with him, but Haley is now striking out on her own and I sense she is about to finally make the big leap to the big stage and major stardom.
@poppycock288
@poppycock288 5 жыл бұрын
@Tim Grace...this video is only one small tiny edited portion of the overall interview VEVO filmed with Haley and is not all-inclusive. See Haley's latest Instagram post for another edited segment. Hence, I'm guessing her time with PMJ also came up during the interview, but probably was edited out in this particular segment by the producers in the interest of brevity. This is obviously a promotion filmed for Haley's new upcoming album "Lo-Fi Soul" due out sometime early next year and is an indication that her new album, unlike her other stuff in the past, will receive major promotion and major support this time around. Not to mention, that VEVO only works with certain record labels. So, hence, whether it is with Concord Music or with another record label, it looks like Haley's upcoming "Lo-Fi Soul" album will receive major promotion, mass marketing, and mass distribution and Haley will receive maximum exposure. I'm taking the liberty to guess and speculate judging by the sound of "Don't Know How to Love You", which is epic, that Haley's new album "Lo-Fi Soul" will be one of the top-selling new albums of 2019 and will garner Haley several top awards and accolades in the upcoming year or two, including a possible Grammy or two for New Female Artist of the Year and Best Rock Album of the Year. Which would be very tremendous for Haley and also go a long way in fulfilling her dreams.

Uh Janis Joplin was cursed bad, and her music was a release an identity of that curse, she while preforming was the ONLY time of freedom, the rest of her time she was continually tormented very sad situation of drugs sex and demon possession, she appealed to a huge audience as with a performance of release it was the only time she was truly free but all the while she was drug ridden, then dying a sad addicted life, she never gained true freedom over her pain until the day she passes now free from the pain of this life she continues to suffer in the next. ,,,,,,,, so pretty lady don’t say her soul is in you cause it’s not and you are a true beauty you don’t have the demons she had and you should be thankful, you have beauty and talent and a sound mind,,, a true blessing

Haley, dear, I certainly hope it is not Janis Joplin within you. Her talent was unique and impressive, but she was so deeply troubled and it seems she tried to relieve er pains thru the worst possible means. May you never face that eventuality. You are also a unique and delightful talent. That is so out of the ordinary for most people that they imagine some supernatural explanation for the difference compared to themselves. I think that's sad. What really sets you apart is, I believe, your imagination, your perseverance toward your goals, the talent that you have honed thru practice, and the people who have helped you along the way. I love your eclectic choices in songs, styles, and interpretations. To me you seem one of the most pleasing creators of new (old) music in this century.

"I believe the soul of Janis Joplin lives inside of me." Not unless you're smoking cigarettes, drinking a quart of Southern Comfort and are addicted to heroin do you have an iota of Janis's soul. And thank God you don't. You might mimic some of her style, which is just fine, but leave her tortured soul out of it. Big fan of both of you and have seen you both perform and you don't need to latch onto her to be the great person and performer you are. (Ask your dad).

@bertjones3010
@bertjones3010 5 жыл бұрын
One would hope that's what she meant, but that is not what she said, at least as my interpretation of the statement meant. After Courtney Hadwin was so erroneously compared to Janis, I find myself a wee sensitive to such comparisons. Janis was a tortured soul and had something of a bullied childhood. Haley on the other hand grew up just the opposite. Her singing talent bridges different genres, from rock to jazz to voice characters on TV. I imagine the only blues she's had in her life is not winning Am.Idol, though I will admit she was extensively bullied on that program by two of the judges and the producers. She may never become a staple of music radio, but then, no one with any real musical tastes listens to that pablum much anyway. (sorry - mainstream music radio has been that way since the 50s pretty much.) And these days, that's not necessarily the bell weather of success - maybe making millions and having fame, but it has nothing much to with being happy with one's success. Haley has what it takes and I admire her very much.

That said, it was that Janis's drug fueled soul would be different than Haley's. Both have souls and one would have trouble replicating the other and, in this case. I was building it around life experiences and influences. And at the bottom of it all, it's a discussion of semantics that Haley was using to describe the influence of Janis's musical style on her. Nothing sinister going on here.

Haley, I know you think it's Janice that you're "feelin" but I think you're mistaken. I think that you are much more Jessica Rabbit!

She is both of them, as she indicated in this video. She will always do rock and roll for the rest of her life because it is inbred in her, as her parents are both rockers. However, she will also always do some jazz music as well, as she has jazz music coursing through her veins because of her experience in high school. See her other current ongoing music video with Jeff Goldblum "My Baby Just Cares for Me".

@@poppycock288 I've seen the "Goldblum video". I've seen a lot of her videos, but nothing compares to her first improv with Irvin Mayfield, singing "God bless the child". You can find it on Casey Abrams "channel". The magic in this video occurs at about 7:30, but watch the whole thing. This gal is not of this world.

@Wes...I have watched that video of "God Bless the Child" so many times that I almost wore it out. Nonetheless, this is my favorite Haley rendition of "God Bless the Child" below. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rZ3GZYiIord4irM&ab_channel=touslesjours

Sister. And you say out load Haley, i, Your full name, would like my highest level self, and my Guides and my(your) Akash librarian to show me(you) a relevant past life, show me what is as relevant this life on Earth as my (YOUR) first life on Earth. This gets the ball rolling cuz you go way further back than the Victorian age yo and they won't approach you unless you ask. Knowing how this goes you might see you as the planet Marduk shattered like dust. If you get grief from them rattle the name on this channel off, and say you were just garnered your full past life classification access. JKB. Old Souls and Old Loves.Hopefully that doesn't have ant thing to do with over this way before I start running both directions at the same time. And there goes the big wave that sacked Atlantis. No wonder I just shorted out. J.
