"dark romance" with straight up SA should not be marketed as a romance!
@jezeldjones11 күн бұрын
Out of interest, what would you market it as? Or are you against it as a concept?
@daisycampbell811 күн бұрын
@@jezeldjones I would personally call it erotica or something of the sorts because to say its romance even with a warning is troubling to me.

Literally I picked up god of malice on ku last year and tried and didn’t get past that, I was like wth ??? I agree I def feel that too many dark romances are literally just sa… like I love a good enemies to lovers or morally grey mc but not something like sa branded as romance 😤

The Infernal Devices is and will forever be one of my FAVORITE series ever!!! The characters and the story are just so good, can’t wait to hear what you think about the last book 🥰
@pegendary12 күн бұрын
The thing about dubcon/noncon not being labelled is that while some SA survivors might read these types of books to help themselves heal, there are also many who would ABSOLUTELY NOT want to relive a trauma like that!!! The fact that modern dark romances allow you to walk blindly into these scenes blows my mind. I come from reading fanfiction - where generally if a fic has stuff like that, it is CLEARLY PUT IN THE TAGS. I don't really buy the "but its a spoiler!" with stuff like this, this genre varies sooo much from having a Rhysand type villain/love interest to literal SA-ers.

28:57 so real, it feels like every dark rom i read nowadays is literally an excuse to romanticise SA on paper 😟
@idissk12 күн бұрын
I personally find it deeply problematic when dark romance books include SA, especially in a romanticized way, it’s a theme i think is very wrong to use as a plot device and it like immediately makes me put the book down and i wont buy it at all. I can to some extent understand why certain authors might include it to like explore trauma or healing, but it’s still an incredibly sensitive subject and it doesn’t justify the harm it can cause to readers for me, especially when it’s romanticized. If a book does address heavy heavy themes like SA, there should be very explicit content warnings and clearly displayed on the cover or in the description which sadly isnt always the case. People deserve to know exactly what they’re getting into so they can make an informed decision. Idk it just rubs me the wrong way🤷♀️
@itsshushasmr12 күн бұрын
well that’s definitely YOUR opinion! there are plenty of resources to find what potential triggers exist in books and other forms of media! :)
@anishinaabae12 күн бұрын
i agree with you! where the hell is the romance in the majority of dark romances? a dark romance should be like the mindfuck series, not a book about a stalker breaking and entering into a woman’s home and sexually assaulting her until she develops stockholm syndrome.
@idissk12 күн бұрын
@@itsshushasmr You’re absolutely right it is my opinion. And even if there are resources out there, not everyone, especially younger or newer readers, is going to know to go looking for them? That’s exactly why it’s so important for authors and publishers to include clear warnings upfront. Otherwise, it’s way too easy for someone to unknowingly pick up a book with harmful content, and honestly, that can do real damage.

Girl...I'm with you with the God of Malice opinions, I'm sick and tired of seeing this series in my fyp because it's just a bunch of girls saying that a guy that abuses his girlfriend is hot, like...no girls, what are we doing? And before someone says that Killian is the most hated male character of the series, yes, sure, but just yesterday I saw a bunch of videos and coments of people saying they don't understand the hate because he's amazing 🤡

28:45 the think about romanticizing SA could not be more spot on!!! The story is always: the love interest assaults her, then everyone GASLIGHTS AND MANIPULATES HER into thinking it’s okay and making sure she falls in love with him. It normalizes SA and all that toxic sh*t in the absolute WORST WAY!! The worst series I ever read was literally him assaulting her the entire series, kidnapping her and blackmailing her and forcing her into things, and everyone else (friends, family etc) gaslighting her into thinking it’s okay and telling her it’s not r*pe (even though she said no a thousand times and tried to force him off her) In the end they fall in love Like what?? It’s the most toxic sh*t I’ve ever read!! And it was recommended to me as a series for teenagers 😳
