Travis discusses and runs through the Handgun manipulation block of the Haley Strategic Combat Effectiveness Test (CET) using the Haley Strategic Train: Performance Target.
All shot from 5 yards.
Proactive/Tac load on up command fir 5rds the S&A. on buzzer conduct proactive load with in 6 sec par time (from holster)
Speed reload (1 reload 1) on buzzer fire 1st rd. reload and fire 2nd rd. in 3 sec par time (relaxed ready position)

when we did double feed drills at the police academy I always did the "lock, strip..." ditty I learned from the old Magpul videos with Travis and Chris Costa and was typically 1-2 seconds faster than everyone else on the line, and I'm no great shooter.

I tried to sweep clear a stovepipe on my Ar15 a few months ago. Long story short -- I slapped the brass and it didn't budge. I now have a scar on my hand, but fde looks good with blood stains.

Regarding clearing double feeds... I think it was very note worthy to not have two live rounds stacked. I guess I never thought about a potential detonation. I was instructed and have practiced using the round completely seated in the chamber. I do like his method, but one bit of experience you miss out on is having the mag get stuck when you initially trying to clear the malfunction. Since the next bullet was partially stripped, it won't always let the mag drop free. Personally I found having the stress of not being able to free the mag, stacked on top of the stress of the initial stoppage, extremely useful. Any thoughts??? Thank you and great drills!! I will be using some of them in own time.

That second method to clear double feeds has blown my mind! Would that work for a failure to extract? It seems every time I've had an FTE has been at competitions and I've gotten good at identifying and fixing using the first method. The second method would definitely help keep times down.

Yes it will work also..you can also depres mag release rip mag out reinsert same mag and rack..its very fast but you only give the extractor one chance to the the chambered round out with that method

ALawnMower99999 this is why I say make sure you test it in your gun to make 100% sure it works every single time you get a double feed. Yes this will work with a failure to extract as well but just keep in mind you have to make sure you rack the slide not ride the slide because A stuck keys does not like to come out very easily.

What I see is possible and already saw it happen is get a cartridge stuck in the mag feed lips and mess up the mag feed lips. I always use and teach (I'm Brazilian Air Force military) the lock the slide first to take out tension and make easier to rip out the mag, than rack the slide, re insert the mag (or new one) and charge the gun because of our duty pistols (Taurus Pt92) dont let a good grasp for the magazine to rip out the mag without locking the slide.

Safariland 6354DO ALS Holster. If you are looking for the same belt mount, I believe it is a G-Code RTI one. Keep in mind, the RTI belt mount requires an extra piece to be fitted to the holster to make it compatible if you choose to go that route. So when you say to look with just your eyes and not your gun, is that specifically for checking surroundings after you engage a target? Recently saw a video of mike glover doing single man room clearing where he was adamant on having the barrel follow your line of sight. Any input?

I think what Haley is referring to is that its often physically slower to turn quickly with your arms fully extended, vs keeping your weapon closer in and extending your arms when you see your target. In room clearing you can move methodically and keep your barrel aligned with your eyes, but if, for example, you heard a noise behind you, it might be better to bring the gun in and rotate vs. just rotating all the way around with arms extended. The benefit of having your arms extended is probably that if you do see something during your turning motion you can immediately fire, and the benefit of keeping your pistol close in would be that you can turn quicker, see where you need to put the gun, and then punch it out to full extension, possibly saving time. So that might be the plusses and minuses of each. But I could just be making a mountain out of a molehill so take that with a grain of salt.

Solwind P78-1's Preliminary Aerosol Monitor you’re right, I guess it comes down to personal preference but to me it’s a little more practical to keep your firearm in tight to your chest and punch out at your threat. Practicing aligning your sights to and from those positions will make it second nature when the time comes.

When you’re shooting on the move specifically in CQB you do not want to have your head on the optic, do you want your head to be freely moving checking corners especially. I prevent using my weapon if I don’t see anything because your eyes will see a threat before your gun can actually shoot it so to prevent angular momentum and keeping in mind speed and accuracy utilizing when your momentum is why we use our eyes more than a gun, sorry for the run-on comment I’m text talking. There’s been a lot of questions about this and we will definitely do another video explaining more in depth

Tap, rack, ready is always the first thing to do when the gun fails to fire, no need to look at it, this is the Immediate Action Drill. If that does not work, then do a Remedial Action Drill, again, no need to look at anything. If a Tap, Rack, Ready does not fix it you better be looking for cover or dumping that gun and going to something else. "Diagnosing" the gun takes your eyes off the bad thing and takes time you do not have.

That’s realistically what you should do. I’m not sure what these drills are for. In a civilian situation I want to get rounds off and simultaneously make distance, scan for other treats and seek cover and call 911. Then clear his weapon and act like I’m giving medical assistance. This should all be done with a concealment holster and mag pouch. Forget about tactical reloads. Unless you have been practicing for decades and have been in a few fights, you are gonna be in a strange state, psychology and physically. Drop that mag and top off your weapon. Use dummy rounds to simulate malfunctions. Standing still is the last thing you’ll be doing. Even in a fist fight you are gonna be moving right, why stand there being an easy target.

This is a great question, I use a power stroke method went running RDS, I have personally witnessed for Optics breaking from people trying to sweep the brass. And it really sucks when a $.10 casing breaks a $700 optic

I would like to know, if possible, something about the resolution of the malfunction "double feed" in the case we have just one magazine so we must retain it during the manipulation (I think the fastest option) or put it, temporary, back away and reuse it again at the end of the operation on the rack. Maybe for you it can be strange but here in Italy also the police, in the majority of cases, have just one magazine during duty. I'm not Travis but I can tell you what I use, even having others mags with me or for those who don't have the habit to carry more mags (here in Brazil on duty police generally use 2 spare mags but off duty is very common carry only one in the pistol). When I rip the mag out I put the mag between the pinky and ring finger of strong hand, leaving my support hand free to rack the slide. I found this to be very pratical and faster then putting the mag on the pocket or pouch. Holding the mag on the hand that racks the slide isn't good because the mag don't let you get a good grab on the slide or can fall when power stroking the slide.

All of these methods are highly effective, but they require you to diagnose the specific issue before you choose the method to apply. If you get a click and no bang in a real high stress scenario, would it be better to default to tap-rack first and then progress to lock back-clear magazine-rack-reload? That seems like it would clear every “fixable” problem without requiring you to focus on diagnosing the problem.
