I was at the Newport Folk Festival in 1966--I had just graduated from high school--and I distinctly remember him singing this song. It was electric. When I finally heard the album version I was so disappointed.

I have spent over 10 hours of a road trip with someone talking about this version of the song… We went into some stories of our past, etc. but all through the lens of this song and the interpretation (sometimes multiple interpretations) of each and every phrase and line: this is a masterpiece and the journey of exploring it is very rewarding… There’s a somewhat hidden lineage of thought/exploration of the potential of personal/national/historical progression (not explored chronologically in song release order) that goes from this, to I Ain’t Marching Anymore, to The War is Over (that is the answer to this song and so much of what is wrong with the world, especially that Ochs felt he/we were up against- artistically, journalistically, psychologically/internally on the deep level explored/described by this song, politically- however you want to say it:)… It is absolutely brilliant… Luckily, I heard this one before the studio version… The studio version is kind of cool with the way they mixed it - but definitely not the way they cut it (and not a big fan of much besides the static and the duet of “talking with the “twin””)… The edit makes it almost incomprehensible- and this is such a deep insight into modernity explored in such an innovative way, that for me between it and (I Ain’t Marching Anymore and especially) The War is Over I will go even further: I find it much more aesthetically pleasing and much more instructive/constructive/a call to action (something that Ochs excels at and an exploration of his role in society) than Crucifixion- which “just” points out fundamental truths and cycles of sacrifice in history, etc. (I understand it’s a masterpiece and respect it, but I don’t love it much- certainly not as much as these two songs combined)… This and the Live in 1968 version are two of my favorite albums (is Live in Vancouver 1968 on any streaming service?) and I think the first two I heard, with a mix of the 1968 version my first exposure to Ochs and maybe a mix tape of some of some of Pleasures of the Harbor before or around Live at Newport… If anyone wishes to ever discuss/explore this song/thematic/artistic progression trilogy in real time, let me know and I would be happy to arrange a Zoom, etc.… But it’s just too much to write down and too much going on to write down everything here in a reasonable amount of time… I’ll send you a tape from Buffalo;)… I also feel that until Elvis pretty much became Che Guevara (i.e. John Lennon started on the path singing with Plastic Ono Elephant's Memory Band, is recorded talking to and essentially trying to be more like Ochs, who in turn at the time was a troubadour interested in being a star, etc.), this set the stage for the Greatest Hits Album (which I love much of), and the amazing recording of “Gunfight at Carnegie Hall,” one of my favorite of his albums (his vocal quality that night, and eventually by the end of second show winning over of the audience, was such an amazing struggle where an artist known to challenge and often alienate his own audience pushed his personal and artistic/professional progression on an originally unwilling crowd-even if lesser musicians such as Dylan challenged with going electric, etc. beforehand)…

@@Cailleach26 I haven't done a deep dive just yet but after a few minutes of thinking about it I think it may be about the effects of living in a TV age?
