Another great video, keep'em coming! Short real life story about the role, Pep Guardiola played his final season as a player for Dorados in Mexico. A Mexican coach, Ricardo La Vople used to ask his DM to drop deep and form a defense 3, especially against sides with 2 strikers. Pep later adopted that same tactical approach with Barcelona and Busquets. However he abandoned this idea later on as Busquets's game was too crucial for Barcelona for him to spend time as a CD.

I love to use the Half Back when I have really good wingbacks but still want to maintain a rest defense back 3. That way you can send both of your fullbacks on attack without worrying about getting beaten by counters behind them. The caveat as you mention is that you need someone to hold the midfield when he pulls back. I've found success with CMs and DLPs in the middle strata of the tactic. The central HB also works really well with 2 BPDs behind him, because it allows them to pull forward and even overlap wide. They effectively become WCBs when the HB covers them.
@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker5 ай бұрын
Very cool tactical tips with the BPD!! And I think this is where a role like the CM can shine; let's the wingbacks be more adventurous while still providing that support in the midfield.

Since I'm not trusting wingers for some reason, I like tactics without them. And halfback is my favourite DM role in these, allowing WBs to provide some rudimentary width in the offense. For me halfback fals into the category of central roles that help secure flanks, although it is less direct than carillero or mezzala.

Great video as usual mate :) the halfback was the key role in my FC Augsburg triple season because he is such a defensive monster. Not just in terms of posession won and successfull tackles but mosty because u become boarderline impossible to press and can always maintain posession. So u are basicly defending by never let the opponent touch the ball and if he does, the Halfback is a great tool for counterpress. Bit like Toni Kroos at Real Madrid. If u instruct ur BPD´s to stay wider and dribble more they gonna act a bit more like wide centerbacks. the only "negative" thing to consider is, as u pointed out, the missing link in the CM for ur build up play so ideally the players in the central midfield (BBM´s, APM etc) have the player trait "drops deep to get the ball" For the algorythm^^

Are they playing higher up the pitch? I toyed with an idea of playing a Halfback in front of a Libero, for example, but decided it was unnecessarily complicated. Are you using two WCBs? That could be interesting. Still, I need to get rid of Zaniolo and my other elite wingers before I can add halfback to my tactics.
@agalvanized4 ай бұрын
@@anders4442 My back line is WCB BPD WCB and his pivot partner is a SV. In possession he sits back and sprays passes and recycles like a DLP Def without being a ball magnet. If the ball carrier gets to the byline he will drift to the top of the box, but generally he just sits back in the DM. In defense he closes down like a BWM. To get this play type of play you need a BWM with good passing stats or a DLP with good defensive stats.

Sir, what a great videos you created. You're the reason I started to create tactics on my own instead of just using others tactics. While it's creating headaches, I fell in love with FM once again. Superb video, I love the comparisons between similar player roles in the same position. On the scale showing the Halfback in between the Anchor and BWM (3:10), where would the DM role fit in? Would he be more or less aggressive at closing down than the halfback?
@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker5 ай бұрын
I would probably consider the DM straight in the middle, but it's also the role probably the most influenced by player attributes since it's a more "generic" role. For example, a player with an aggression of 20 would behave differently in how they tackle than one with aggression of 7

I have experimenter with a half back and a segundo volante. The wingback pushes up so HB takes his space. And on the other side the IWB goes to the center. So you have a nice 442 defensive shape with a really attacking offense. On the side of the IWB is a Winger in the CM line to provide an outlet on the wings and on the WB side you have an IF so the WB overlaps. That leaves you free to do interesting striker combinations

@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker4 ай бұрын
Hmm; my guess would be it's the two wingbacks on attack combined with your defensive midfielder on support. I think because you only have two players on the defend duty (your central defenders), along with two wingbacks attacking, you're probably being hit on the counter a lot. It's an easy fix; I would switch one of the wingbacks to support (or even a fullback on support if it still doesn't help), and then change the DM to defend. Should give your team a better defensive structure. Thanks for the question and hope that helps!

In a back-3 system, the HB will be more like a defensivie midfield all the time, rather than dropping deep to take the play of the centerback. So think of it like a tame version of the segundo volante (in a back-3)
@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker5 ай бұрын
You don't necessarily need 2 IWB but the IWB makes sure you have coverage in that midfield area without necessarily needing to use one of your midfielders. I would start out with one IWB and see how you like it. You can always adjust your midfield roles too if you don't like using the IWB

@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker shorter passing, tiki taka, high press, high possession. Didn't think team tactics would affect individual player instructions but now you mention it I'll do some experimenting (when I wake up. It's 3am here) and see what happens

@@yoogeo1 No worries! I don't think they do either, but you never know! I've had issues where my player was accidentally on another role because of a personalized instruction or there was something with a conflicting instruction. Sometimes it's tough to figure out what it is exactly 😂

What happens with the dribble less warning shown at 10.20. Can you remove that?
@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker3 ай бұрын
Nope, sadly that instruction is built into the Half Back role. That's the trade off with using a "playmaking Half Back"; they are told to dribble less. In this case, FDJ will still dribble with the ball, he just won't do it as much as if he was in a dedicated playmaking position

An issue with HB is that the player often drops too deep, giving up the DM area when defending, which could be problematic when HB is the only DM role in the formation. Sometimes its better to have another DM holding the area, especially when againsting strong IFs.
@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker5 ай бұрын
Very very true; You could see it in some of the highlights in these clips. That's why I liked the two inverted wingbacks holding that midfield area shown in the offset example
@kristianfaber16325 ай бұрын
So as the example of Frenkie shows that player traits have more effect then instructions. Since HB has hard coded dribble less? One of frenkies key strenghts was to dribble out of situations beeing pressed and creating a lot of space and momentum dribbling passed his opponent pressuring him and progressing forward. I think that was one of the key aspects of his role and why barca bought him.

My interpretation is that the player will still exhibit their player traits in a role telling them not to, they just won't do it as much. So de Jong will still dribble (like we saw in the video), but he wouldn't do it as much as if he was in a role telling him to dribble more. Hope that makes sense!

Do you think that pace will help a halfback a lot by essentially allowing them to quickly transition between in and out of possesion position, mitigating structural problems that may come during that period
@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker4 ай бұрын
I would say it couldn't hurt, that's for sure! But if you have a slow Half Back, strong mental attributes can make up for that (anticipation, decisions, etc..)

Do you think a Regista will pair well with a half back?
@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker5 ай бұрын
Hmm I think it could! If I did, I'd probably use an IWB on at least one side to make sure there's someone in the midfield area

why would plays way out of trouble ever be a bad trait?
@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker4 ай бұрын
I think the idea is that even if the player has that player trait, they may not be great at dribbling out of trouble. So if a half back is playing their way out of trouble, and they have a poor dribbling attribute, then they could turn the ball over in a dangerous area of the field. Plus, the de Jong example not withstanding, you want your half back to make simple passes to move the ball, not to be dribbling with it. It's only my point of view but hope that helps!
