You know, Mike's just joking at the end, but a villain who was genuinely trying to make friendly contact who, inadvertently either through side effects of their technology or by cultural miscommunication, was causing Big Problems...that would be a very Star Trek concept.

Having watched it thrice and therefore ~45 minutes, I've now watched almost as much of the last 15 minutes of this episode as I have all of NuTrek. It's so awful. At least Mike eating board game pieces makes sense in the RLM canon.

At its soul, Trek is about a chain of naval commanders on a cramped submarine, radioing the engine room, and DS9 brilliantly brought in a tiny ship, the Defiant, just to get off the station for some submarine battles. Sometimes getting back to basics can also revive the ethos.

The Tuvix episode might be my favorite one from Voyager. It really sums up all the problems with the show when the captain drags a literally screaming person off the bridge to execute them, and the holographic doctor refuses to perform the operation since it violates every ethical value it was programmed with, so the captain just does it herself with no real attempt by the crew to explore alternatives. The Voyager crew isn't like the flagship Enterprise crews. They're the C students of the federation, and boy does it show.

A star trek movie like they said, the villian just wants to unite all species under one banner because his homeworld only recently became a part of the greater galaxy and was nearly wiped out. It's not that he dislikes the Federation, he just believes that if they have the resources to better other planets they should, which heavily goes against the Prime Directive. Then at the end, Kirk realises that the villain isnt that horrible, and that the device he has is actually going to save a world for annihilation so as the villain is dying, Kirk decides to trust him and doesn't stop the machine. The Federation is of course furious, but Kirk tells them he was simply too late to stop the device but he's also glad he didn't since a species is getting a second chance. The crew has his back and they continue on, swearing to hold to the Prime Directive as best as possible but also not forget the lesson that everyone deserves a second chance.

Why cant they have a Star Trek villain who isn't "revenge man?" The show had plenty of examples of that. You could have a character whose ideals conflict with the philosophy of star fleet, that would challenge the views of Kirk on a deeper level, rather than on just a superficial "im gonna destroy earth" level. There could even be a level of respect between them, despite being adversaries. And you could still have massive battles and popcorn action as a backdrop to this.

Regarding the song sabotage showing up in the first Star Trek, it wasn’t a radio station, it was like an mp3 player of Kirk’s step dad’s. The car was his step dads and it was a classic ancient relic. Clearly important to step dad. I think the use of the song fit because it was part of his step dads obsession with these old things. It makes sense that his step dad would drive it around and listen to the old music.

I adore these reviews because just like Mike I adore Star Trek. It's great being able to relate as he glazes over some of the more ridiculous but amazing plot lines from episodes. I completely agree that the ethical questions and dilemmas posed in the various series' are what make the show so great. Man, I love 'em. Always will.

A villain who had differences in the past but now wants to be friends? The real conflict could be our heroes learning to forgive the past and move on into some kind of.... undiscovered country.... nah that sounds stupid
@Relugus8 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that would be stupid and not at all be regarded as one of best Trek movies. ;-)

It's a shame they backed off of that plot and just turned it into Khan 2. Leaves it still viable for someone, though.

The thing that still irks me about Beyond is a comment about the lost starship they use to get back to the station. The old captain (bad guy) was a MACO, a Federation Marine featured on the TV show Enterprise, so his ship is from that era. Those ships, the NX ships, were Warp 5 capable. That was the big thing. The Warp 5 engine was designed by Captain Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula)'s father. It was a big point on that show, and that's why the MACOs and the ship was referenced in the movie. EXCEPT, in Beyond they make a comment that the ships were Warp 4 capable, not Warp 5. It's small, but it was like nails on a chalkboard to me. I'm not a comic con guy. I don't dress up and playact Star Trek, so I think of myself as being very flexible. But the movie was so great a making those reference, honoring the canon, mixing all of the great elements of Trek with the action, but they made that one glaring error and it just drives me nuts.

Crazy thing is that Beyond was the best of the 3 new Trek films and it ended up being the one nobody saw! One of the subtle references was in the opening monologue Kirk refers to them being 900 plus days into their 5 year mission which would put them just BEYOND the 3 season run of the TV show.
