The combine guard has the unsettling factor directed more towards humans. Think of yourself as a resistance fighter and you see a fellow human face embedded in the hulking giant. It symbolizes how the beta combine took humanity and reconverted it into their own gritty and mechanically grotesque image. What was once a person is now a cog in the machine meant to oppress you.

my friend and i have discussed several times about how when u revisit it you realize just how like small the actual enemy variety in hl2 retail was, while there was a lot about the cut content/raising the bar era ideas i don't think would have worked, it does make me lament that so many interesting enemy ideas were scrapped

They really needed more alien variety, all there really was were antlions and headcrabs when we were *so close* to having Bullsquids and Houndeyes as well.

@Ace Becks “Enemy types” does not directly mean more alien variety, a majority of those were Combine Soldiers and Headcrabs/Zombies

The coolest thing about HL2's setting is realizing that while you're playing Gordon in an FPS, the Combine are currently deep into a 100+ hour game of Stellaris. >__>

It's always nice coming back to the hl2 beta, while it was probably too ambitious with its enemy variety and world, there's something really captivating and interesting about it. The dark, grey world, the disturbing combine enemies and the consul all seem like amazing concepts that we'll probably never see again. Unlike the hl1 prototypes, wich were just dumbed down versions of the final product, these prototypes feel like a real, creepy world to explore. I'm happy with the final game of course, but I would have liked to see how this vision could have turned out if they stuck with it.

Excellent video as always. Particle storms had a point_particlestorm entity at one point, according to VXP. It apparently only contained clientside information, as in it was just a sort of particle system, nothing for the server to go off of, but he also recreated an npc for it. Very basic, it's simply a cloud that wanders aimlessly, and it's not even in current versions of leaknet. It also has an fgd listing for "npc_particlestorm," which suggests that it did have an actual npc at one point.

The last set of cut creatures look like something that came out of Dead Space, the spiky / pointy design give them a very horror like look.

Tbot was suppose to be an early version of Dog. The textures weren’t really a different enemy or “mech” for Weather Control, it was just early textures for what Dog was (same model as in retail). And the flamethrower bit was an idea at some point but no official model or any references direct to that besides a few concepts Travis Brady had in mind since in his own words thought it was stupid in an interview. Otherwise great vid RadHaz!

Dude I just found out about all your HL2 beta videos and they're great. The HL2 beta fascinates me so much I'm actually writing it out as a sort of high-effort fanfiction, and these videos (though I already know most of the stuff in them) will certainly be good soirces to use

I did it I'm making a book (more like fanfiction) that was my version of Half-Life 2 Beta it would have major changes from the original but have that unsettling vibe. A lot of the enemies including the ones in concept art or just voice lines are in. Others are not and I've managed to put it together and you're the one that inspired me since I did have original version but that was taken down.

And when he said he said: " I seen them take a whole squad soldiers tearing gunboats to bits, some say its electrical disturbance, but if you ask ME there's a intelligence there somewhere, IF only we can ""Communicate"" with it a ""Force like that in OUR SIDE THAT WOULD BE A POWERFUL ALLY" Its probably the vorts and that's why there our ally in the retail which is cool, its probably the vorts right guys?

It's called the Particle Storm, it does have a model without an official texture that is like a translucid sphere that moves from one side to another (much like the anomaly from the Metro games) The idea of using it to your advantage was reused with the antlions. And the Vorts were planned to become allies since the first game. So no, its definetly not the Vortigaunts

The sand barnacles were made canon in Black Mesa but with a drastically different design: the Black Mesa sand barnacles are found underwater in the Xen levels (mostly Gonarch’s Lair) and resemble toothed anemones with kelp like tentacles stretching to the surface. They pull the player down, have longer bite range than regular barnacles and come in large groups like jellyfish swarms, but could be killed with the crowbar from the side or using underwater firing guns if I remember right. Like jellyfish on a bad day at the beach, they’re everywhere and make swimming a pain. Good thing is I think they stop appearing once you reach or partway through Interloper.

Damn. The sackticks are like real life Ticks but more, deadly. Also the storm is super unknown to everyone, all we know is that it was deadly and things like that, also it's particle based, which means it uses particles to visualize itself, and from the Half-Life 2 Beta wiki the restored version had no combat ai and had placeholder smoke, and it would just move around the map. Anyways, I absolutely enjoy watching your videos! I love watching things all about the Half-Life 2 Beta.

Sorta sad the enemy variety is quite small in HL2, with a few being reskins. HL:Alyx also lacks in enemy variety which is again sad as i imagine alot of these enemies or just more in general would've been great for VR.

I don't know why Valve is so afraid of introducing alien variety in Half Life games. The last straw is that when they finally dare to introduce a new alien in HL:Alyx (the Revivers aka Electric Dog), they call it a headcrab. I mean come on! Headcrabs are inspired by the Facehuggers from Alien. This one is clearly inspired by the Daggerwrist from the book Expedition, like many other creatures from Xen (like the Bullsquid and the Xen Tree) and they're nothing alike to each other.

@@Agustin_Leal Yeah HL2 onwards i've noticed they've been lacking when it comes to enemies, i'm unsure as to why though because their story/world building is so so well done that it's a shame that you've barely got any fun enemies to fight in it making the world feel empty compared to HL1 where you got the right amount of enemies and all served their purpose perfectly. HL:Alyx you don't even get to fight metrocops anymore, no fast zombies, no enemies that make it feel unique if that makes sense and it doesn't help that the AI is pretty poor (stands in front of grenades instead of runs away) and no melee combat, all the objects around you do no damage and exist just for looks. As much as i love HL:Alyx the game has no replay value which is really a shame since it feels like Valve is downgrading just to show off their new tech.

there is an Alien enemy that we do not fight in the retail game of Half-Life 2, but we can see them. In the Citadel, I can't seem to remember but I know that we are in the cage going to doc Breene's office. We can see them during the ride, a Giant Turtle or a Giant Beetle walking, Green in color, Like a heavily armored creature, there are Two or Three of them, I think they are armed like weapons attached to them. After that nothing, in HL2Ep1 and Ep2 didn't encounter them.

Ok the walking synth gun might've been a sniper sort of enemy that would probably have to be taken down milby blowing off the legs. Also that thing is based.

I'm gonna also say something and hope to god, not get skinned alive. Although the hl2 beta is exetremely cool, its story seems to be filled with problems. 1. If most the water were drained from earth, how could the borealis(Yes I know MOST Of the water would be drained but still) 2. Although the air exchange is an amazing idea, it doesn't fit into the story. See while most if the random NPCs where a mask the main characters like alyx, barney and kleiner don't. 3. Aliens take over, yet we are still using our earthly guns.+ sidenote for some reason a good number of hl2s guns are designed by h&k. 4. If the oceans are dried then what is creating the wind sound effects in some if the back ground noises? 5. Why are the railways running three the wastes so underguarded? 6. At the end of the end of the beta canals section there would always be some shanty town. How in the hell did the combine not find this and absolutely just fucking nuke it. It's literally five-night miles away from the main wall. I will add more when I think of more.

8:40 honestly i have the feeling the elite metrocops wouldve probably had something to do with nova prospekt or some other prison type setting, or maybe only a 'leader' of metrocop groups like how the normal elites probably are in canon

Probably would've been a leader in regular metrocop groups in the early game city 17 chapters but during the uprising you probably would've fought groups of them in a addition to their leader role.

As for the crew of the Borealis,they likely had no idea what was onboard until it was too late. still though,seeing these cut enemies and characters makes me think that Dark Interval is our best bet for a Beta restoration/recreation using some retail assets.

If anyone is curious, here is what the Particle Storm looks like ingame. vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/half-life/images/8/8c/Particle_storm_official.png/revision/latest?cb=20180615113155&path-prefix=en Their a placeholder effect. It was also cut because of Script issues and caused crashes in builds. Pretty much was because of coding issues and impossible to design in-engine, simular to the Hydra Tenticles from E3. It might still be functional via Scripted sequences in lost Gold Source builds in Storyboard missions where the audio came from (Meaning Post-FREE TVs or Later on in 2000-01) though but we will never know because those have yet to be leaked or dumped.

I'm longing to see these creatures in Half Life 3, it would be so cool if the plot was about how the Combine aims to send its strongest forces to earth to destroy it because of all of the resistance they faced while trying to run it- they have all the resources, they just want to get rid of us now. Now imagine the transhuman forces are turned off for failing their mission and now gordon and Alyx gotta fight these awful creatures... Vortigaunts and humans fight a LOTR type of war against the Combine...

You know the partical storm sounds like the Nihilanth to me, especially form.wav and seeing as it was supposed to look somewhat like the resonance cascade and the Nihilanths death also had the same effect as the resonance cascade. So mabey the storm was something like the soul or remaining essence of the Nihilanth lashing out against those he thought wronged him?

Civil Protection Elite (CPE) had many designs. But only one model was found. they mostly where going to be equipped with the SMG or OICW or the RTB OICW (The grenade launcher variant) due to it being in the late HL time They probably did use the alt fire unlike the CP. They also probably where guaranteed to have a Manhack at there disposal. higher HP. and they believed if you got too close the CPE would pull out a stun baton and throw very quick melee attacks. That is just what i think

Combine elite synth soldier has the same same arms as the charger in Left 4 Dead 2 so the idea got used later on.

i'm thinking really down the line, but with AI Prompt based engines, maybe there could be a program that would "fill in the blanks" for these cut creatures or maybe even whole parts of cut content (levels, weapons, locations, set piece events, etc).

and at first, maybe the textures would be warbled visual messes, the AI's attempts to prefect what the prompt specified. like how neural network art would have a humanoid figure rendered but within it might be a few dozen eyes or random colors. we forgive those defects to its output, and as long as we could run these theoretical "ai created half life 2 beta script prompts" in source sdk we could enjoy what the AI produced for us (mistakes taken into account) my limited and armchair understandings of Neural Networks and AI lead me to believe that this is possible in ~5-10 years

There were some NPCs that didn't have any models or concept art, but did exist in code: Roller, RollerTurret, RollerDozer, RollerBull, & Rollermine.

@@jess648 Yeah. Although I think the one that's just called "roller" is basically a template for making other roller npcs. The Roller turret fires lasers at you if you're close enough, Roller dozer just pushes debris around, Roller bull seems to be the closest to what we see in the leak & retail, but the actual Roller mine was probably meant to explode near enemies. There's also Roller buddy, which I'm guessing is either just Dog's ball, or meant for reprogramming the rollers to be friendly.
