The announcement before release (sometimes very short, sometimes 1-3 months or so) is becoming more common, with the latter you can still build up coverage and interest without risk because the game is done, its not gonna be cancelled, and it wont have features or story hooks or things dropped that were promised because its done. Honestly I think this is better for most games. Its fine to say "we're working on something" and disappear and only come back with a full announcement not long before release when what you've done is largely ready because its just.. better overall. There are few cases where having eyes constantly watching and judging during development is helpful. So, it wouldnt surprise me.

I don't think there is going to be 'multiple timelines'. I think there is one timeline, and it can be manipulated. Why would G Man spend all this time making things the way they are 'supposed to be' if there were multiple timelines? Couldn't he just ignore the timeline where things go wrong? Seems silly. I think Alyx was taken away for a reason - it's been nothing but Gordon and Alyx for a large majority of the episodes and led her own game after that, that no other characters get to shine that much. Kinda like Cortana in Halo. She was absent for most of Halo 3 (other than visions), and doesn't come back till near the end. She's still involved in the story, but from a large distance from Chief. Alyx might be the same. She might have her own story going on. At least with Alyx gone for half the story, it gives more time with characters like Eli, Barney, Magnusson, Kleiner, Mossman, and maybe some of the new HLA characters like Russel and the scientist.

The concept art, the gameplay with the ice gun, the blob, and the story points suggested by Mark Laidlaw's short Epistle 3 (which did not actually involve any Half-Life characters, only similar characters with different names like Dr. Gertrude Fremont) are all remnants of the Episode 3 that the documentary spoke about which was in development for a few months after Episode 2 and was abandoned in favor of Left 4 Dead 2 and Portal 2. I don't think any of that work has any relation to new games Valve would make. If I had to guess, I think a future Valve might change the direction of the Half-Life series to the extent that the arctic and the Borealis won't even be involved. Those are all ideas over a decade old which the Valve of that time didn't find interesting enough to pursue.

Something I proposed a while back was the idea that, with the Combine empire cut off from Earth, the forces on Earth fall into chaos, with the command structure tarnished. The Advisors manage to hold everything together for a few days, but once the Resistance closes the portal, the forces feel no need to obey the Combine anymore. My headcanon is that the Combine rely on what I call the Rebel's Dilemma to keep everyone in line. Basically, to start a rebellion, you need someone to make the first move, and nobody's willing to do that because they fear not getting the support they need to continue it. Few join the rebellion because they feel as if any rebellion is doomed to fail, and they don't want to be on the wrong side of the Combine. Now, my theory is that the synths are sentient beings that also think this. The synths need to be smart enough to consider rebellion, and the Combine uses this tactic to control them. Let's apply it to the events of the Episodes. The Citadel falls, and the Combine are temporarily cut off from Earth, so the synths participate in thwarting the Resistance's attempt to close the portal, because they see no possibility of the Resistance succeeding and freeing them from the Combine. THey also hope they'll get special treatment for preventing this. And once again, each individual synth fears the possibility of nobody joining them in their rebellion for the same reason they won't try, so they don't try. Now, once the Portal is closed, the synths realize that the Combine are gone now. So they just refuse to follow orders. The Advisors are forced to do the dirty work themselves when they try to kill Eli or whatever, because nobody wanted to help. Some still feared the Combine would return somehow, but with the majority of synths rebelling, they decided to join in too because they were outnumbered. This effectively removes the Combine as the antagonist, with the synths now either neutral or fighting for their cause, perfectly allowing for G-Man to be the new antagonist.
@jackrutledgegoembel589621 сағат бұрын
Really cool idea. Does make me wonder what antagonistic motivations g-man would have though.
@unematrix5 сағат бұрын
You're assuming a lot here. Based on what we can tell about combine soldiers, they have been altered so much that they are barely even human anymore. And even CP's receive drugs to keep them doing their job. If they can do all that, can't they also just block any rebellious thoughts? They can prevent embryonic reproduction but they can't stop a few neurons from firing?

I want to contribute some further possible ideas for Half-Life 3 with what I've found from the new developer commentary in Half-Life 2. This is speculation like everything else, only based off of what we already know and what is suggested. 1. In the chapter Entanglement, the developer commentary (I think it was either Marc Laidlaw or Dave Riller) says that they wanted to explore more of Dr. Mossman, but they never finished her character arc because of Episode 3. When Gordon and Alyx reunite with Mossman after learning about her betrayal, the commentary also says that Alyx would never kill Mossman despite the high tension. In playtests, most players would try to shoot Mossman after her betrayal, so Valve had place her behind bulletproof glass and have the beginning of the sequence paced fast enough so that Alyx could size up the situation first, thus discouraging players to shoot. This is in contrast with Epistle 3 which had Alyx killing Mossman in the heat of the moment. It seems likely to me that Dr. Mossman will live in Half-Life 3, possibly spending more time to bond with the player or having something else done with her character acr in a positive way. 2. At the beginning of Anti-Citizen One where D0g throws the van at a squad of Combine soldiers, the developer commentary states that Valve wished they could have had D0g be more involved in gameplay as a companion. The couldn't do it in Half-Life 2 though because D0g's mechanics would be so different from both the player and the types of enemies designed for the player to fight, meaning they would have had to build an entirely new game from scratch with new enemy types for D0g. Valve did experiment with a D0g and Alyx game at some point with concept art that leaked, and the leaked Episode 3 maps had levels where the player could upgrade D0g with new abilities and weapons. Perhaps Half-Life 3 will include at least one section where Gordon and D0g go on a journey to rescue Alyx? I think Xen would be a great place for D0g gameplay because the environment is so varied and there are all sorts of aliens non-native to Xen. It would give Valve total creative freedom to come up with alien enemies and levels tailored to him. D0g fighting old enemies like a gargantua or a tentacle would be cool too, and it would help to make HL1 and 2 feel more connected. I may edit this at some point with further ideas, two hefty paragraphs is already enough though lol.

Since graduating MIT, Gordon has been a pawn whose contract was open to the highest bidder, as Dr. Breen stated. I have a hypothesis that Gordon and Chell were given the same treatment by their respective organizations: augmented, possibly lobotomized, and essentially enslaved. The great irony of Half-Life is that Gordon has NO control and is in no form "free". Rather, control is given to the player- the Singing Vortigaunt in Water Hazard speaks of this directly: "Far distant eyes look out through yours. Whose hopes and dreams do you encompass?" As nice as it might be to see this entity be liberated, I am not entirely sure if Gordon could even comprehend free will.

And this is what Eli is freaking out about. He just watched a second younger Alyx appear out of nowhere, fry the advisor that was about to kill him, and disappear, then the first Alyx grins at him before being thanos snapped out of existence. After speculating for a while before Gordon woke up, he realized that the second Alyx was real and involved with the G-Man, and the first Alyx was a fake all this time, tying the split back to the vault incident 5 years prior.

There are no employers, but rather the employers are other versions of himself moving from one dimension/timeline to another, an unconscious unison that keeps him safe and somewhat sanely functional to his goals(but keeps the mulitple versions of himself as employers as a motif, signifying that he lost his marbles due to the Borealis experimentation from Aperture, thinking he is still working for some company). He/They work in unison to find a lead to stopping the Combine. He never finds a solution, just sees multiple dimensions and trying everything to no avail. A Sisyphus myth in a corporate suit that never reaches the desired outcome or never decides upon one. He nearly gets captured by the Combine but got freed through his clever foresight time-weaving with his/him-employers(the combine stopping his copies from running altogether) by Alyx -> That's when the Combine nearly got him when they reached the Borealis - he is somehow stuck there. The solution: Gordon "demoting" the Gman by killing the Gman and harnessing the power of the Borealis, scene called "You're fired/demoted". How he does that? Maybe by discovering the dimension weaves or the imprisonment tech already present from the Combine. The remnants of the other versions of Gman are fading away all traveling, however wherever they step they help Gordon trace the correct dimension pockets, as he does not know how to travel between these dimensions and where they go.What goes on in the Half-Life universe? Will Gordon get mad over his new power? Will he stop the combine? We will find out in a next release! The events remain the same with the concept art, finding the Borealis with combine tech -tralala. But to be honest this would be a clever switcharoo. I hope my English makes sense. Not a native speaker and am a tad bit tired. lmao

Building the story around gameplay innovations is honestly a brilliant game design philosophy. That means you'll never be bored by drawn out, uninteresting story beats because every story beat is upheld by new and addicting gameplay mechanics. The genius of Half Life is that the story is actually pretty cool. So you get both a compelling story and an incredible gameplay loop. And I disagree with Laidlaw about the lack of story for EP 3. It sounds like their best story yet. It sounds darker and more epic than even HL2 with unbelievable landscapes, an intense, vengeful Alyx and a Freeman who sacrifices everything to save the world. I'm guessing those ships littering the ice sheets were ships that disappeared either in gravitational anomalies created by Aperture or failed experiments on Aperture ships done over the course of decades, maybe even longer if time travel was involved. This would have been such a trippy game.

Here's something interesting that I bet most people don't know (or have forgotten) that would be shocking if it wasn't directly related to Post-'Alyx' Half-Life, I.E.- Half-Life 3. In January of 2021, Gabe gave an interview in New Zealand (why there? No Clue.) In it, he talked about their state of Brain-Computer-Interface technology (BCI) essentially their ideal control mechanism for 'Alyx' and VR in general. However, it goes MUCH deeper than that. He basically said that they ALREADY HAVE (and this was just shy of FOUR years ago, remember!) not just BCI functional interfaces, but VR-Experiences that, for lack of a better term, are essentially 'Sword Art Online' in quality. He said they could create Virtual Worlds that were 'more real than reality' and that regular life seems somewhat dull and flat by comparison. He talked about how they discovered that the human brain was extremely adaptable and could even learn to control having many tentacle limbs, like an Octopus. (Which also may be a subtle reference to SAO, for those familiar with the Anime.) He said that their biggest problem, was that the technology was developing SO fast, that they were having a very difficult time deciding when to 'lock things down' for commerical release. Saying that if they did that, then a mere six months later, that new tech would make the 'old' versions look antiquated. SO. In less than two months, that interview will have been given four years ago. Since then... Nothing. Not a Peep. No additional interviews, no brief mentions of the project, not even little hints. Zero. Nothing. Nada. Was it abandoned for some reason? Did they have to close down public discussion? Did they decide to go 'Radio Silent' and dedicate this tech for Half-Life 3, so that it can be as big of a leap as each new HL game has been? Questions, questions...

My theory on why the concept art had so many ships, is that the Borealis in the main HL2 timeline was the cause of some sort of slip in time and space, allowing changes to take place between timelines, such as the one in HL:A. The other ships would have been the Borealis from alternate timelines and universes, all converging to our Borealis due to whatever fuckery was going on inside, causing it to become a sort of anchor. The idea that Alyx from HL:A, and Alyx from HL2 are two entirely different entities could play into that. If that's the reason for the change in VA's, that's a next level move from Valve, setting up the next game.

I’m waaay to invested I. The possibility of hl3. It’s such a big part of my life I wonder if I’m autistic about it lol. Anyways, I was upset at the new documentary about hl2 because of Gabe’s corporate speak about the continuation of hl3. Honestly( anything I would’ve heard other than hl3 is confirmed from Gabe was likely to disappoint me. This video changed my mind though. I heh you look at his words with a more hopeful standpoint they line up with what he said after Alyx: they’re returning to half life! Also, why else put episodes 1 and 2 in half life 2? It seems like a respectful move to finally put all the half life 2 stuff together and give us a little closure!

I think the G-man is definitely a good guy, I think he is aware of a way to defeat the combine. He is trying to get all of his pawns into the correct places, but in doing so he is unintentionally creating distrust. I think the ending where the borealis doesn't destroy the combine may be caused by disobeying the G-man, and the cut back to Black mesa is the G-man reversing time and trying again. half life is basically groundhog Day for the G-man. The ending of hl alyx is perhaps another run through of events, because Eli's death and alyx's emotions led to humanity losing.

On the topic of showcasing scale, I think the wall of ships stacked like a canyon would be an excellent way to demonstrate how easily the Combine can manipulate our Earth. They went digging for the Borealis through a ship graveyard and doing so lead them to effortlessly stack the dummy ships aside like they were just building blocks.

The fact that getting a new Half-Life game is a genuine possibility is really exciting. If I had my way I’d probably have the next game be a sort of ‘episode 3’ and wrap up the Combine’s occupation of Earth plot point with a game after it being a more full fledged ‘HL3’ that centers around the Gman and his employers as the primary focus.

I hope Half Life 3 isn't a complete ending. I don't necessarily want infinite sequels and the series to never die, I'm one usually in favor of letting a story end, but Half Life has simply just shown us a world and forces so large and strong that one more game would NOT be enough to put an end to it, so it shouldn't. And I get there's the worry of "But what if we don't get that next game again?" but the only reason we're upset that that happened with Episode 2 is because Episode 2 was a major cliffhanger. As Gaben even said, the original plan was for Episode 2 to have its own ending like all the previous ones, but was given a cliffhanger just to excite people for Episode 3. You can have an ending for a game that isn't an ending for the series, and I think that's what HL3 deserves to be and should be.

I see a few possibilities, one of which is having the Borealis end up as the "gateway" into Xen. It would make up for the 'lackluster' Xen in HL1, and would allow pull the games full circle in another return at the end of a game. Another possibility is that it may be a sort of "weapon" used against G-Man. Although Eli was previously afraid of the Borealis and what it could do in the wrong hands, his anger and hatred towards G-Man may change his character and opinion. I suppose we'll have to wait and see. It's impossible to know what the game really might have in store until it's actually announced by Valve themselves.

Pretty sure all the ships were the borealis. Several versions across time that all culminated in that space creating a huge labyrinth of decaying identical vessels merged into one timeline. The art shows the ships all looking similar too. 4:46 the silhouettes of the ships are very very similar.

For many years when I was younger I was almost angry at the fact that they didn’t do an Ep 3 years after HL2 ep 2. But as I got older .. I got what they meant by wanting it to be proper, bigger, better more innovative. It truly shows just how much they care for the game, the story, and more importantly how their fan base views the game.

I have a little theory, or more like story line, that is so long it leads up to Half-Life 4. But TLDR: Alyx is in the Arctic due to Gman's demands. When Gordon enters the area, Gman then awakens Corporal Shephard to hunt him down, clearly showing that he doesn't want him to intervene in Alyx's mission. Gordon, Eli, Mossman, and Barney get to the Borealis where they accidentally go back to the 7 hour war. Gordon needs to fend off the Combine forces at that time for the Borealis to recharge and go back to the current timeline. Eli ends up breaking the Borealis. They end up in Aperture Science where they all get captured by Glados. Gordon is able to get his suit back but uses the portal gun to battle Glados who has modified herself with the Gravity gun and knowledge she got from Eli. After escaping Aperture in Glados's death, (here's the part I really want to see) Gordon gets reunited with his lost family (Gordon canonically has a niece or nephew from the baby photo in his locker back in Half-Life 1). Then with the still functioning Nasa spaceship modified to jump dimensions, Gordon, Barney, Eli, Mossman, Kleiner, and Gordon's relative go to Xen since Eli somehow finds Alyx's coordinates there. In Xen they find old Black Mesa equipment and research sites, Kleiner now picking up samples. Gordon is hunted by a giant Combine mech that is twice his size. Gordon needed to sacrifice himself again in Xen to let the others escape, then battles the mech as the final boss. The mech is destroyed open revealing that Alyx was inside the mech the whole time, seeing differently through the mech's lenses. Gman appears disappointed that his plan backfired, so he makes a wormhole that pulls Alyx and Gordon into the Combine Homeworld. This is where Half Life 4 could be at. My idea for the Combine Homeworld is possibly an artificial solar system, with giant superstructures connecting the planets they had captured, one structure empty where Earth is supposed to be. There we meet the remaining alien species that are the base aliens the Combine uses to make Striders and some other living weaponry. Gordon is then given the task to revive the old rebellion in the Combine Homeworld where he then faces the Combine leader itself. I have many ideas about how the leader might look like. One cool idea I have is that the leader has been modified so much, it's original species is now extinct. A literal living fossil, modified to live forever. Another idea is a living planet. Thats all I have for now.

They truly do push boundaries, and the leaps that their games make are exceptional. I hope the next half life pushes farther with Physics, soft body material simulation, AI enhancements and elemental interactions... if they drop HL3 looking something like Alyx, cut with the gameplay freedom that 2d gaming brings... it will be sick. VR is cool for the immersion, but gameplay gets limited in many ways, and a true HL sequel on mouse and keyboard, bringing their awesome reflection implementations and attention to detail... oof.

I think the Vault from HLA kinda uses some of the ideas from the original concept of the Borealis. The vault also warps time and space once you enter it, and experiencing it in VR makes it more impactful than a similar idea in flat screen. I don’t know if Valve cares about that, but if they do they either have to top the mind fuckery of the Vault or come up with some completely new idea to make it feel more impactful instead of more of the same.

I still believe hlx, is going to be like portal. part of half life but not all that integral. maybe even just a wrapping up of xen in general. but something you said in this video made me think that they could be using xen as a relay, like they currently use it for their transportation. maybe aperture science messed up and instead of transporting/opening a portal to xen, the device they were using ended up inheriting aspects of xen, such as the time shenanigans. we are pretty sure the vortegaunts see the world and timeline differently, I was listening to the vort in the tunnel that sings, after defeating the hunter-chopper in the end of the airboat section, so it makes sense to me that gorden was guided each time he went to xen. something made the parts gorden visited tangible, walk-able, and probably influenced the organic teleportation devices' destinations. so I think the apature science device doesn't have that innate guidance. its a wild-card that nobody can predict. putting all these thoughts together we get: likely a different protagonist. likely mostly only xen maybe escape from xen borealis inherited aspects of xen somehow something in xen, perhaps the vorts themselves guided gorden. you aren't guided as much, and with an open world environment as a focus, we can imagine that HLX is likely going to be one of those far cry, ghost of tsushima type games. ultimately two alyx theory is too good to ignore, but lets make it simple, young alyx is a different character, and she seperated from her own time-stream events, but can interact and guide others in other time-streams, she can influence people through xen even. so I'd imagine she uses her green to travel 'literally anywhere' and ends up in xen, and out-of-time. this means that the borealis likely holds AN alyx but not 'the' alyx, as well, perhaps aperture was successful in opening a portal to xen, but something came out that was unstable, alyx. but not your alyx. some other time-god-alyx being. oh and chell helps gorden with an exasperated look on her face whenever she does. while gorden handles the combine for her.

Theory for HL3 (HLA spoilers) It will end with Gordon and Eli (also probably the Vortigaunts) saving Alyx from Gman and then maybe just maybe Gman will bring Adrian Shepherd out of stasis to replace Alyx after she is saved like how he used Alyx to replace Gordon in HLA.
