I'd say keep expectations at at minimum a 2026 release date for Half Life 3 Valve play tests obsessively, it's rare to see a project have less then a year of play testing, Valve is so obsessive with play testing that for counter strike updates they even get pro players to test them for a couple months It'll be a minimum of a year of play testing a game tweaking left

Yeah, the rumor for CSGO S2 started around mid 2022, and then CS2 was revealed out of nowhere on March 2023. HLA took a year for story rewrite after playtest result. Supposedly launched alongside Index as a release title. Neon Prime got its entire theme overhaul also because of playtest, even after they filed the trademark. Probably supposedly revealed in 2023, got delayed to April 2024 and changed to Deadlock (the first external play test started). Always expect to wait a year after the rumor of external play testing started.

Yeah, that has been my thought for everyone going nuts about this. All you have to do is watch the half life documentary and you'll see that they start playtesting almost immediately in development, they could playtesting prototypes for all we know.

Watch all of Gabe Follower's videos on Half-Life 3 in the last 4 months. The technology they are creating and testing for this game is in line with what you would expect from the continuation of the main story. It also just doesn't make sense logically to make another spin-off when they already teased HL3 in their last one (And like, the only person they could make another spin-off about would probably be Shephard, cause that's what their plans for Episode 4 was, but it would probably be too sudden to return his character that way)

@godkekliveshere431 I think Source 2 will be the key to HL3's potential success if they can manage to make the game look really really good but be able to run on almost anything (including the Steam Deck and whatever other hardware Valve is cooking). VR support would be nice but its really up to whether they think it should be required that will make or break HL3. I played Alyx and it was a great VR title but not what people are looking for for the next mainline Half Life entry.

I guess that Alyx took more time to playtest and story reboot because it is a VR game. So it could took longer to test than conventional flat-screen game. Deadlock got its entire theme rebooted and assets changed, but the gameplay formula was relatively the same. HLX is written by the people who made the final Alyx, notably Erik Wolpaw and Jay Pinkerton, so I don't expect a major story change. Both of them brought back to Valve after playtest result saw that Alyx' original story was underwhelming.

I was in mid 20's during the Doom, Quake and Half Life releases and it was a wonderful time to be alive. Each game blew us away with dramatically improved graphics every few years, especially once 3Dfx cards were available. I like playing games that are small and work better with a controller on the Steam Deck. My current favorite is Windward. Of the list, the ones I like the most on Steam Deck are DRG Survivor, and Slay the Spire (the latter is not so great with a controller). I guess another criteria is that they have to be games where sitting down with them for 10-20 minutes is an option.

There is not even the slightest chance that Valve would release HL3 the same year as GTA6. These 2 games are too monolithic to co-exist in the same release space. So if HL3 is a thing and it does get announced for release this year you can be sure it's because they have spoken to Rockstar and been told GTA6 isn't releasing in 2025. Dude I hate to be a dick but that's zero proof that this indicates a HL3 and this video title is a bit click-baity. The tweet and video you mentioned could be referring to a new IP or a new title in their other series if anything, or even a sequel to Alyx since the "testers" were all wearing headsets. Shapiro's last post is 4 yo, made around the time HL: Alyx was released. Linux will never have that big desktop movement for only reason, there's too much hardware variety and not enough Linux devs to support said hardware. The only reason PC handhelds work so well with Linux is because there's only one combination of hardware for those units.

I'm already tinkering with Linux distros on Lenovo notebooks and I have been pleasantly surprised with the results. The delayed consequences for MS ending support for Win 10 haven't struck yet, but MS's fumble with ARM is setting them up for serious pain as they remain insanely fixated with AI.
