polycount, shaders and textures might evolve, but everything is a product of their time, and if that product is done with passion and care it becomes timeless. See the classic Resident Evil games, Halo, Half Life, etc. Back then we wished for games to be closer to reality (aesthetic-wise), but now that they are, I think it's time to realise it's not a special thing to have at all.

HL1 really felt like you were first hand witnessing a world ending event. The story flowed like a well written novel. The situations and environments you felt yourself in really made it seem like you had to get out of Black Mesa, if only to find out what had happened to the world outside. There were times when you thought you were going to make it out, only to be sucked back in. I still remember the first time I hit the surface when the military showed up, expecting them to be there to help, and not at all expecting them to start shooting at me. I actually felt bad fighting them in the game. The fact the game showed they were fighting the portal storm invasion as well as trying to seal up and quarantine Black Mesa at all costs made it clear how out of control the situation had become. Haven't played it in years but I still think about it some times. HL1 was up there (maybe more so) than DOOM in its sheer influence on gaming for decades to come.

Aaaah this was the best game of the nineties. Back in the days there was no widespread internet as of today, no youtube reviews. We as kids collected video game magazines that came with CDs full of playable demos and review/test-videos. I first saw half life in a review and could not believe how a game can have such fancy things like scripted scenes (Scientists being pulled into ventilation shafts, helicopters dropping soldiers on ropes etc). Half Life was absolutely revolutionary and back then we couldn't imagine how graphics could be more photorealistic. I remember playing the demo (Half-Life: Uplink) at least 50 times. At a time when games still had the flashy exaggerated and colorful art direction, this game made something bold; a really long, eerie interactive opening sequence with no action. There were no GUI clutter, just soft subtitles used extremely sparingly. From the first moment you were given the idea that this was going to be an "experience". Probably turned off most numb, or stupid gamers away, but it was followed up by an intense 10-12 hours long incredible series of events.

Everyone always goes on and on about how Half-Life 2 is the best game ever. I don't think so, but compared to the others, I still think the original Half-Life beats HL2 to the ground. Idk, there were so many things in this game that were far more impressive than HL2 did IMO. The intro, the situations, the characters and enemies you encounter, the environments you traverse, this was basically godlike, and I can definitely see why people still praise it to this day. So, to those who worry how I don't like Half-Life 2, take comfort that I think the original is till beyond impressive.
@benwasserman82239 жыл бұрын
Well one thing you can't deny HL2 did better was character design and development. That made it truly separate itself from everything before it.

Omg, it is like saying Metal beats Rock.

True, HL2 reduced its quality by trying to add character development and cliche story telling techniques. HL on the other hand was something original and unique. Good art is not always adding things. A good poem does not need character development to be enchanting.

Good morning and welcome to the Black Mesa Transit System. This automated train is provided for the security and convenience of the Black Mesa Research Facility personnel. The time is 8:47 AM. Current topside temperature is 93 degrees with an estimated high of 105. The Black Mesa Compound is maintained at a pleasant 68 degrees at all times. This train is inbound from Level 3 Dormitories to Sector C Test Labs and Control Facilities. If your intended destination is a high-security area beyond Sector C, you will need to return to the central transit hub in Area 9 and board a high-security train. If you have not yet submitted your identity to the retinal clearance system, you must report to Black Mesa personnel for processing before you will be permitted into the high-security branch of the transit system. Due to the high toxicity of material routinely handled in the Black Mesa Compound, no smoking, eating, or drinking are permitted within the Black Mesa transit system. Please keep your limbs inside the train at all times. Do not attempt to open the doors until the train has come to a complete halt at the station platform. In the event of an emergency, passengers are to remain seated and await further instruction. If it is necessary to exit the train, disabled personnel should be evacuated first. Please stay away from electrified rails and proceed to an emergency station until assistance arrives. A reminder that the Black Mesa Hazard Course Decathlon will commence this evening at 1900 hours in the Level 3 facility. The semi-finals for high-security personnel will be announced in a separate, secure-access transmission. Remember: more lives than your own may depend on your fitness.
