Love this song! Exactly describes the childhood Subbuteo experience! Lol. National Shite Day and Knobheads On Quiz Shows are another two great HMHB tracks. Last lines refer to his friend now working in the DHSS unemployment office and him picking up his Giro - unemployment pay - every two weeks.

Holy shazzbot! Half Man Half Biscuit came into my life in college. A friend picked up a used copy of "Back In the DHSS" cuz of the manic cover. It became the favorite of many a drunken, stoned, whathaveya evening on Transylvania Park.

As you get into HMHB you will realise there are a lot of niche uk early eighties references so that might make it difficult for you but they are a very special band for alt music fans of that era (like me)

Ok, I have a fair deal to say about this! For one, as a kid, I had a Scalextric track (slot cars) and I had a dodgy transformer as well! Secondly, I played Subbuteo as a kid and have an unopened box in my garage. It's a table soccer game. And finally, my brother has a sense of humour, so he found a store online that sold replicas of the old Dukla Prague away kit. I now have a Dukla Prague away kit replica in my cupboard. It's a strange yellow shirt with some purply logo in the middle and purply sleeves.

This song warns of the dangers of table football megalomania, something I almost succumbed to in the early 1980s.

To help you non-U.K. people out a 'Scalextric' set was an electric racing car game either run by batteries or transformer plugged into an electricial socket (outlet). 'Subbuteo' is a soccer game, with a mat (field) and goals either end, played with pieces which were models of players on a base with a semicircular bottom that you'd flicked onto the ball to 'kick' it, you could get sets of these pieces/men representing different teams of players.

I don't know if you've done My Perfect Cousin by The Undertones, but that also refers to the football game referred to here: Even at the age of ten Smart boy Kevin was a smart boy then He always beat me at Subbuteo Cos he flicked to kick And I didn't know...

OK you have started down the the Half man half biscuit rabbit hole. you have a long way to fall yet. This is a very early track. Try these for the different vibes of HMHB The light at the end of the tunnel, National shite day, What is Chatteris, Oblong of dreams, Alehouse Fussball, Midnight mass murder, What made columbia famous, lord herefords knob, 24 hour garage people

Kudos on being probably the only music reactors to feature Half Man Half Biscuit. I think your research on Dukla Prague is slightly awry though. In the football (soccer) playing nations, replica football kits are quite the thing. Fans wear them though, either the team they support or maybe other foreign or international teams. (It's nothing to do with "fussball"). A Dukla Prague away kit would have been quite an obscure collector's item back in the day. As you say, it's a fun song about the frustration of chilhood/teenage games, which were never as good as they looked in the tv adverts. I think it also refers to having a "friend" who is more well off than you, and who is destined to be in a superior role when you leave school. It reminds me a bit of "My Perfect Cousin" by the Northern Irish group The Undertones. Incidentally, both HMHB and The Undertones were particular favourites of the legendary British DJ John Peel, who was a champion of many less commercial or alternative bands.

Dukla Prague were an absolutely garbage team from Czechoslovakia as was. The idea that anyone would want a Dukla Prague home kit for Subbuteo would be silly enough, but an away kit? And that's the joke. Though if you go to a HMHB gig half the audience will be wearing them! And yes, Scalextric never worked. It was a dodgy transformer - again and again. Thanks for this, it's a very early HMHB classic. They are still going strong and amazingly are probably more successful and well known now than they were in their pomp. That's where 6 dates a year gigging and refusing to perform when Tranmere Rovers are at home can get you. Nigel Blackwell for Prime Minister!

I seem to remember that Dukla Prague were an Army-sponsored club - I don’t think they exist anymore. They almost knocked Manchester United out of the European Cup Winners Cup in 1983.

They were the army team. I saw them when Hearts played them in 86. We were robbed in the away leg but when the home fans have guns you don't argue too much.
