Cabin Quilters

Күн бұрын

In this video I will show you how I took two 10 Square precut fabric packs and easily turned them into a huge stack of half-square triangles using an easy piecing method and some great tools. From that stack of triangles I create 4 unique blocks layouts to turn your Squares into beautiful quilts. These blocks are easy and versatile and a great way to use up your precuts.

Your CG ruler wouldn't slide around if your mat didn't bounce . You can make your HST and not have bias edges. If you don't like to sew the lines, as I don't, cut QST units and use your 1/4" foot. Works great, and yes you will be sewing on the bias, but it's easier to stitch the units afterwards without any square contortions
@CabinQuilters
@CabinQuilters Жыл бұрын
People with mobility issues often have ruler slips that have nothing to do with a bouncing mat. The tape is a very easy gripper that is inexpensive that solves that problem. Thanks for watching.

I was curious about the ruler. It looked like a CG ruler to me, and those are known for not slipping, so wondered why the tape was necessary.
@CabinQuilters
@CabinQuilters Жыл бұрын
@@gailbroadaway3531 there is a little grip on the back of CG rulers that does help. But if you have any hand mobility issues it can sometimes be difficult to apply enough pressure to make the engraved grippers work. The tape seems to add more friction and prevent slipping a little better. Also using a weight on one end of the ruler helps tremendously.

I have so much of that medical tape here that I swear I'll be wrapping Christmas gifts with it! Using it on the back of the ruler is genius; thanks for the tip. Regarding making your HSTs this way, how do you handle the resulting 4 bias edges so they don't stretch out of shape? Seems like you'd about have to starch the snot out of it so it doesn't go anywhere.
@CabinQuilters
@CabinQuilters 9 ай бұрын
Starching helps. I tend to be very soft handed with my triangles, especially if they are large. So far so good for me. My trick is not to let them sit around loose too long. The more they are handled the more they tend to stretch. You could also use a fabric stabilizer like Terial magic to keep the triangles stabile until you are finished with the top and get a border on.

You are correct but I try to make my videos accessible to beginners as well. Beginners may find that step challenging. But it’s great you can skip a step. Thanks for watching.

Quick question....once you've ironed do you cut off the bit of fabric that's hanging over the edges?

You can. The trimmer I was using has slots to cut the “dog ears” off. I was too lazy to cut that part. Thanks for watching.

What did you make your design wall out of?
@CabinQuilters
@CabinQuilters Жыл бұрын
The design walls in the video are made from foam insulation board (from the local DIY store) wrapped in white flannel. The blocks stay nicely and you can stab it with pins to put up a quilt top. Thanks for watching.

Hello. I really enjoyed this video. What is the make and model of the Janome sewing machine you are sitting at the beginning of the video? Also, please do a tutorial on economy binding. Donna Robertson of Fabric Cafe: in her 3 yard quilt books she uses 1 1/4 inch strips for binding, she calls it economy binding. How is this even possible....it's just mind boggling to me. Please help. Thanks for sharing your talent.

The sewing machine is a Janome Gem Gold. It’s a small compact lightweight classroom machine. It’s works well and is the right size for an extra machine. $350 or less. That’s a great idea for a video. I’m guessing she is using one layer of fabric for binding rather than folding the fabric over. You would most likely fold the fabric in on the sides by 1/4”, sew and wrap. I will have to do some research on that one. But if you are making a baby quilt and something you plan to wash over and over or give as a gift I would do a traditional binding. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment.

@@CabinQuilters yes, single fold binding. The joining of the beginning and ending is the part that has me perplexed. Maybe demonstrate on a smaller project like a placemat or table runner. Thank you for sharing.

What is your wall made of? I'm wanting to do the same, but everything I've tried wont alliw my material to stay.

I use a 4x8 sheet of insulation board from the local hardware store. It’s a stiff foam but you can place pins in it if need be. I cover it with white flannel fabric.

I tried this trimmer. Cannot get the line to stay on my stiching line. Much rather press the HST and use the Bloc Loc ruler instead.
