The only difference is that the whole quilt is made from two and a half in strips so mine will have two 2 1/2 inch center pieces. You explained it so well and now I can begin!

Nice tutorial. One thing though- it isn't necessary to use y seam in your on point table runner. If you assemble your rows on the diagonal, y seams aren't part of the assembly.

Years ago I bought a skein of 100% wool to knit a large rectangle. Washed in hot water and dried at hottest setting, it shrunk much smaller and is very thick. makes a perfect ironing mat to keep close to my machine

Hi Kea! Great tutorial and thank you for showing us this Easy Half Log Cabin Block. Log Cabin blocks, as you well know, are one of the most basic blocks to work with and one of my favorites because it is so versatile. So many different looks just by rearranging your blocks!! It would be very cool if you could do a tutorial for beginner quilters to actually show the various ways to layout the log cabin blocks! ;-) ;-) By the way, I LOVE the hanging rod behind you to display your projects! Here is a tip for the beginners . . . when you finish a project and you have leftover fabric, I like to organize my fabrics as I go so I will cut my fabrics into specific sized blocks and make my own "pre-cuts". Here are some sizes to consider: Layer Cakes = 10" squares, Charm packs = 5" squares, Jelly roll strips = 2 1/2" x 44". There are lots more sizes one could cut but I usually try to stick with the basic ones that are most used in many projects. I cut my scraps immediately after finishing each project because I have all my coordinated fabrics together and can then keep them together for my next fun project(s) like the ones Kea has shown here. :-) Thanks again for this tutorial and keep them coming Kea!!

That's a good-sized lap quilt rather than a wall hanging you've got there Kea. And if you put on a wide border, it'd be even more generous sized. It'd be particularly good with a layer cake that definitely has half "light" and half "dark" prints so you really get a contrast between the logs. Very cute,easy block.i am going to try this some of the layer cakes I have. Thanks for the idea. When I work with a series of blocks , I use a quick version of portable design board using 11x17 mailing envelopes and slide in a piece of card board from cereal boxes, to set each block unit on. Light, easy to stack and store

Thanks for the tutorial! Very cool way to use layer cakes! On the tablerunner, if you sew the rows together diagonally then there are no y seams. It allows the setting triangles to be added at the beginning and the end of the rows.

Very nice tutorial, thank you. I like the idea of starting the block with a 4" square & using all of the fabric. I love zero waste! I'd like to share 10 tips that I was once given: 1. Show your viewers the finished project before you start. It helps them visualize how things fit together as you go along. 2. Make a written outline of your tutorial. It helps you feel confident & keeps the tutorial on track. 3. Practice what you are going to say until it's smooth & natural. *Don't skimp on your practice* -- you don't need perfection, but you should want confidence. 4. Record a test video just as though it was your final one. That way you can be sure that what you need is neatly placed where you need it to be ahead of when you need it there. It will also show you where to place things to keep them in, or out of, the camera's view. (BTW, If you'll need to lay out & then move aside fabric pieces, have a piece of scrapbook paper ready to lay them on. That will be easier to move around without moving each individual piece.) 5. Review the test video to see if you are using for slang words or phrases that may be unclear to your viewers. 6. Listen for verbal pauses. Most people make sounds (like "ah" or "um") & draw out vowels (like "toooo" or "aaaand") instead of pausing silently to collect their thoughts. Verbal pauses distract viewers & make you sound unsure. Yet most of us aren't even aware of them! Here is a trick that can help: while you practice, have a listener drop a coin into a metal pot every time you use a verbal pause. Once you're aware of using them. you can start avoiding them. 7. Review the test video to correct your outline so the words feel natural for you. Print it out so you can read from outside the camera's view. Place it so it's not obvious but you can still check it easily if you need to. This will help you feel confident & keep you on track. 8. Review your appearance on the test video. Clothes should be comfortable & attractive. They should fit well & not tug. Choose complimentary colors that are not too bright or too dark. Keep your hair neat so you don't fuss with it. In short, keep all of it from distracting the viewer from what you are teaching. 9. Clear the work area of items not required for the tutorial. Reducing visual distraction helps the viewer to focus on *you* & what you're teaching. 10. Do the same for your studio background. Again, you want the viewer's eye to naturally rest on you, not wander over your wall & shelves. Finally, DO NOT let these or any criticisms stop you from making tutorials. You have a great voice & an easy style that is enjoyable to watch. Take this advice & use what works for you. Remember, we never stop learning so we shouldn't ever stop trying to improve. Thank you for reading all the way through this. Remember, you have something of value to offer. You can be sure that I'll be tuning in again! Best of Luck, Deb

I love variations on the traditional Log Cabin pattern and this one is going in my Future Projects notebook. Sandie is right about sewing the rows together diagonally so there is no need for 'Y' seams. I use narrow strips of light iron-on stabilizer on the diagonal seams before I cut the block apart so there's no stretching of that outside edge.

Hi Nancy, thank you for sharing! MGS- we have actually been married for almost 10 years :) but thank you for saying we look so young! Our son has Hydrocephalus and has been having some trouble with the shunt that drains excess fluid from the brain. He’s four and has had 10 brain surgeries. Thank you for your prayers ❤️
