Learn what to check if half your house has no electrical power, the lights are dim, or 220v appliances such as a dryer, range, heater, spa, or A/C don't work. No, or partial electrical power troubleshooting for your home or business. I've experienced this problem a few times over the years. A poor/corroded connection can also cause the same problem seen in this video. Enjoy and share the video!

I worked for the electric company up north and had an apartment house that a storm broke the neutral and the metal SE conduit got so hot that it melted the vinal siding due to the current trying to return on the pipe. Ended up cutting down the service until a new one could be installed. All the voltage went to L1 and L2 only had a couple of volts on it. Thanks for the video.

Over the years, the most common cause is usually a poor(high resistance) connection at the meter can or main panel. A couple times the meter socket was faulty, and the connection to the transformer was bad.

I've been working on house wiring since I was 12 years old. Many accidental shocks over the years. LOL The wires leading into the panel have no fuse. The main breaker is the fuse. At the transformer on the utility pole, you have the switch, which is likely a 1000A rated fuse. In many areas you'll see 4-5 homes on one transformer. Glad you like my voice. :-)

Well...up her in the Midwest, we had some bad storms this past Summer. After July 4th, I was "lucky" enough to be the only one in my subdivision with a brownout. The local power company stonewalled me at first, but either they fixed it, or it miraculously "healed" itself. The consequences were/(are): 1. The transformer in my HVAC got fried, and a technician had to put in a new one. 2. The electric garage door wouldn't work, and when I (gently) moved it manually, the cable got tangled-and, THAT had to be repaired. 3. The refrigerator made Terrible noises, and dimmed the lights, so I had to unplug it 4. speaking of lights, when one overhead light was on the other ones dimmed. Two days ago: Deja-Vu all OVER again. I DO have a backup generator (Generac) but it doesn't come on automatically like it should. I manually started it today, and plugged the fridge back in. But-my microwave is fried, my cordless phone charger seems to be, and, YOU guessed it, the HVAC does not work...not even the fan. This is beginning to SUCK! This latest episode cannot be due to weather. The weather has been calm; just a bit of rain. The electrical company sent me a text,stating that there was "power to the meter" so there cannot be a problem at their end. A lady did get back to me on the phone yesterday. I think I will get an electrician over here, if only to document things.

But maybe in this case because the power company’s subcontractor that cut the tree did the damage, they accepted responsibility?

My mother had an older house and was having electrical problems. I took my trusty meter over there and started checking voltage. Most of the readings were less than 90V, I traced it back to the meter so I called the power company and asked if they would come out and kill the power so I could pull the meter and take a look at the base. They wanted an outlandish sum so I told them I would pull the meter and when I was done I would call them so they could reinstall the security wire. When I pulled the meter I saw one of the buss strips the screw connecting the two right-angle strips was loose. I took a screwdriver and wrapped it base with enough electrical tape for safety, tightened the screw, reinstalled the meter and everything is now working fine.

I love how that "smart" meter had no fault detection/protection, they should start making that mandatory. The customer was getting free power from the meter being out and if a neutral fault occured it would have caused damage. Of course the more advanced the meter, the more expensive but that's what they should be using our taxpayer dollars for. Granted, that may have been an old meter, but they should upgrade them, preferably soon (after the virus crisis). Smart meter rant over.

Hold on a second, The meter has no power! So the meter electronics are ran off of 220/240v? Seeing as these smart meters phone home constantly you'd think they would be aware of a issue. Plus it sounds like shes getting free power while the 1 leg is missing

A very good chance she is getting free power, since no display.

If you put a bunch of magnets 2 inches apart then wrap a thick cooper wire around the AC unit the 120 will double to 240, it's true I seen it on KZbin 😉 Kappa

interesting, the meter was not functioning yet she still had power! Theoretically, she could have lived on 120 without incurring fees until the power company realized her usage had dropped to zero and sent someone to investigate...lol. The only question I have is, why her lights were dim, even though she had full 120 on one leg? Some sort of bleed through on the neutral?
@Robnord1
@Robnord1 4 жыл бұрын
Light circuit was on the leg that had partial power. The line was not completely severed.
@watermanone7567
@watermanone7567 4 жыл бұрын
With no neutral going back to the transformer you get an imbalance on the load and usually one leg goes hi and the second leg goes low. Very common. Sometimes the current trying to return to the transformer will go thru a copper water pipe underground.
@Quickened1
@Quickened1 4 жыл бұрын
@@Robnord1 ...yeah, I forgot that one leg was not completely dead! So I'm assuming the lights that were on the other leg would have been normal, if there are any... Still find it VERY interesting that the meter itself was not running....

5:54 "they" meaning workers cutting the tree? Would file a liability claim against "they" (tree trimming service) at min if they were not bonded, insured and licensed file with the department of license-sure for your state. They are very few certified arborist in most southern states- its a fading profession and the regulation is just as bad with home inspectors. Just because you know how to start a chain saw doesn't mean you have even a clue of aptitude for tree removal. Lesson dont hire any tree trimming service with out proper bond, licensing, insurance AND CHECK THE DOCUMENTS! call their insurance company doesn't matter how long they have been in business or how many reviews they have.

Not worth the trouble. Rose's neighbors hired them(the landscaping company), and the people that run the company rent a house from the neighbor. The neighbor said she would pay for any damages.
@proanswers
@proanswers 4 жыл бұрын
@@electronicsNmore Regardless of the verbal restitution gesture, words dont pay for damage; which doesnt hold up in court since its a "he/said she said" communication that judges dont favor to on the plaintiff end- burden of proof. #1 There is clear neglect and incompetence on the landscaping company which needs to be held liable #2 if not for this incident but potential future mistakes they could be causing to other people; if they dont have the credentials, insurance, safety and license to work in this trade. Cutting any tree over live/any power lines is extremely dangerous work, to deadly results- sometimes a permit is needed-certain counties/states. The damage was very clear in the video. The fact the landscape company (not a arborist company- landscaping companies in a lot of states can only MOW GRASS/clean up debri) didn't make contact through note, follow up communication to this "ROSE" shows the unprofessional-ism and further neglect. Regardless Rose could make a claim on her homeowners insurance and the ins. company would follow through on suing or collecting deductible from "landlord of home" insurance claims can always be cancelled but there's proof of the event and investigation if "ROSE" wanted to present this to the landlord of the property whom hired the incompetent/mistake/negligent landscapers. BUt what we know we just see cases like this in the hundreds every year where innocent "Rose" like people (especially seniors) start having other damages, death, and injury because of negligent/careless work. Mistakes do happen but communicating those mistakes is key and how your going to resolve them is ethics. ****The electrical company may add a fee onto her next bill for the repair- we have seen this many of times. Electricity is not a government tax paid utility in the USA. Good luck and nice work on the diagnosis.
