@piguyalamode164 3 жыл бұрын
well, interestingly the xkcd comic gave a not great example because the substitution password they choose would not be easy to crack(due to it's esoteric word choice and esoteric substitution choice) while the word based one might be easier to break with a dictionary attack. But, yes, generally common substitutions may not have a significant impart on your password security at all.(whereas longer and randomer passwords are significantly harder to crack for all methods)

An excellent article on the topic. www.digitaltrends.com/photography/bigstock-dives-into-the-photographers-mind-on-how-kooky-images-end-up-on-its-site/ The most important part: "A common theme in the creation of most intriguingly funny stock photos is spontaneity. Some photographers choose to leave in the funny, offbeat, behind-the-scenes bits on the cutting room floor, and some choose to submit them to stock agencies with the rest of their entries. It can make for some great, unexpected, and humorous content." (From article linked above)

XKCD is not wrong - it says that given the same knowledge of the password requirements the second is easier for a human to remember, and the first is easier for a computer to crack - XKCD's example is easier to crack, as it is CommonWord+with standard substitutions + symbol + number - yours is harder
@davishall
@davishall 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, thank you. XKCD is saying that if you need to remember a password, make it long rather than use common substitutions. A long password, even with a limited character set, is plenty strong. However, if you don't have to remember it, like if you use a password manager, it is always best to have a random collection of symbols from a large character set.

Fun thing about Whangarei: I live there! Also, the very particular thing you did of mispronouncing the name like that was actually a hot button issue for New Zealanders for a while. The pronounciation of Maori names in New Zealand was (kinda still is???) a weird micro culture war. Te Reo Maori (Literally "The Language Maori") did not have a system for writing before European colonists arrived in New Zealand, so when one was eventually created it used 'wh' to represent their /f/ sounds because the way the indigenous Maori produced their F sounds was different than most languages using the Latin alphabet; instead of using their teeth and bottom lip to produce the fricative sound, they did something more akin to pursing their lips and blowing. So Whangarei is pronounced Fung-uh-rey. ...at least it should be, but that's where this lil culture war pops up: Some Pakeha (White/NZ European) people in New Zealand spent a couple decades (or maybe centuries who knows) pronouncing Maori names distinctly more English, even at times when this literally was not how they were spellt. A local mountain in Whangarei, for example, is called Parihaka, and is proncounced exactly how it's spelled. Yet for some reason a lot of people ended up pronouncing it "Para-Hackey". And this ended up happening for a lot of Maori names, with probably the funniest example being when people called Whakatane (F*ck-a-tarn-eh) as "Whack-a-tain". In the last couple of decades there's been a greater push to preserve and respect Maori culture. One small part of this has been putting more emphasis on not bastardizing their place names for no reason - and to be clear, this is not a case of language shifting naturally; the Maori have been pronouncing all of these words the same the whole time. Some racist older people got really upset that "they're trying to change the way it's said!" and were quite bothered that they were being told they'd been saying it wrong the whole time, or that the place they'd grown up was no longer called what they had always called it. So for a while you had this group of people that would very insistently pronounce all these place names wrong deliberately and get very intense if you tried to correct them or even pronounce it different from them in conversation, because in their eyes they were taking a stand against linguistic oppression or something. The whole thing has died down now and aside from a few very very racist holdouts people say the correct names. But yeah, that's the story of how Sam accidentally engaged in a racist dumpsterfire by pronouncing a word with a "wa" instead of a "fa".

So why not just change the spelling to something people are more likely to get more right more often?
@The_Noblest_Roman
@The_Noblest_Roman 4 жыл бұрын
@@cloudkitt Because generally when people who don't speak a language struggle with the pronounciation of its words, you don't change the language to suit their needs. One one hand you have: "Change how Te Reo Maori spells /f/ sounds, go through the beauraucratic process of renaming the thousands of Maori place names to be spelled with 'F', find some way to deal with a sudden divide in written Te Reo texts spell a *tonne* of words, and then explain to the Maori population that their whole written language is being changed to make sure that a gaggle of vocal racists pronounce their place names correctly, even though those same racists will also probably now be angry the place names are *actually* being changed, and will just double down on their idiocy" On the other hand you have: "Tell some boomers to suck it up and stop pronouncing these place names incorrectly" The choice seems pretty clear.
@cloudkitt
@cloudkitt 4 жыл бұрын
@@The_Noblest_Roman I was not suggesting we change *their* language, I was suggesting changing the way their language is rendered in an alphabet that is not their language that would more accurately represent the pronunciation so that English speakers would be more likely to pronounce things correctly even without prior knowledge. I did not realize that Maori did not previously have a written language, so fair enough.

Hi Sam, I am a commercial Pilot on a 737. Under EASA rules you don't need "certain amount of hours" to keep up the currency of the rating a pilot holds but certain amount of take offs and landings. Usually 3 take off and 3 landings within 90 day period, a simulator every year for Licensce proficiency check and Line oriented evaluation as well as a Line check flight every 2 years. The 3 take off and 3 landings can be done in a simulator meaning a pilot can go months without flying an airplane and then operate a flight with passengers.

This video is 11 months old but hey it’s a video involving correcting pronunciation errors. For the Chinese dynasties: Táng is pronounced with a soft a. The hard a sound doesn’t exist in Mandarin Chinese (there is possibly a debate to be had over why we use Mandarin names for historical places or figures that predate the dialect, but that’s for another day) Suí is pronounced like the word “sway.” In pinyin romanization, the letters u and i do refer to the sounds “oo” and “ee” when the vowels are used independently, but together are pronounced like “way”… for some reason. If I recall correctly, the pinyin was designed to make Chinese generally easier to teach, not specifically for English speakers like some older systems I’ll give you a pass on the tones though. I spent 8 years learning Chinese and I still manage to bungle them sometimes

Irrea I mean... if we’re talking Chinese pronunciation, he pronounced Tang and Yang wrong too
@Joseph-qs6es
@Joseph-qs6es 4 жыл бұрын
And Tang/Yang isn't pronounced with the ang sound in angle. The a is pronounced with an ah sound. It's similar to the American pronunciation of tong. Yang also has the ah sound, but Andrew Yang just adapted to Americans. Actually, I think all Chinese (Mandarin) pronunciations of characters in which their spelling/pinyin only has a vowel of a (e.g. Shang in Shanghai) all use the ah sound, but Americans (and probably other countries) mispronounce it with the ang sound in angle. Sui pronounced like sway.

On that vowel space diagram you showed, there's severals points around it, represententing all the distinct vowel sounds. Next to each point is a unrounded sound to the left and a rounded sound to the right. Rounding literally just refers to if the lips are relaxed or being... rounded. To show that the vowel has been fronted, you would move the circle to the next leftmost point, showing that the vowel has changed to a different distinct vowel that is futher forward in the mouth. Instead you circled the vowel to the left of the same point, showing that the vowel was no longer rounded. ʉ would have been the vowel to go to, as it is still rounded, but further forward in the mouth. PS - please make more linguistics videos :(

5:38 "and was replaced by Christian Oarman" Oof. I'm used to foreigners butchering my language, but that mispronunciation is ironic given the video topic. Honestly though, I can't even figure out how to write that phonetically in English, so maybe it should be excused. That said Ø ≠ O, and it's an E, not an A.

In the Eruv video, you pronounced the Hebrew words "eruv" and "melacha" like a gentile. Here's how you pronounce each one respectively: עירוב/eruv forvo.com/word/%D7%A2%D7%99%D7%A8%D7%95%D7%91/#he מלאכה/melacha forvo.com/word/%D7%9E%D7%9C%D7%90%D7%9B%D7%94/#he Granted, the "ch" sound in melacha (the unvoiced uvular fricative) is hard for anyone who speaks English as a first language to pronounce, if one did not grow up knowing how to pronounce it. You could get by if you pronounce it like a strong H, though

3:05 NOTE :- it is probably a issue with the fact that he used a different programming language, but in java AKA the de-facto database language, It is difficult as overloading with other syntax(AKA options for inputting) is common, so it means a lot of work addressing it and it rarely comes up, so that's why it is the case.

for the twelve people who care, at 6:21 he references the antarctic accent video. In that video, he says that going from [u] to [ɯ] is fronting when in reality those two vowels actually have the same frontness and the only difference between them is that the former is rounded and the latter is unrounded. Actual fronting would be going from [u] to [ʉ]
