The Faroese government will build a tunnel to connect to 1200 people, but the British government keeps saying that it isn't worth bothering building a tunnel to the isle of Wight which has over 140000 people.

Okay, those tunnel construction costs make _WAY_ more sense knowing the cost for the ferry service. If a year of ferry operation costs as much as 500m of tunnel it starts to look feasible over the long run, particularly with the increased reliability of the tunnels. And when you think about it, by the time a tunnel pays for itself, you'd probably also have needed to buy a whole new ferry.
@MrThijmenmees2 ай бұрын
To be fair, depreciation of the ferry is probably included in the figure, so buying a new one is accounted for. But still, you're very right. If it saves that much money annually, it makes perfect sense
@TheFinalFrontiersmanАй бұрын
Some napkin math indicates that the tunnel would cost a bit over 14 dollars a day per person over 30 years... Which does sound pretty close to a ferry ticket now that you mention it!
@mnxs8 күн бұрын
Don't forget, however, that the tunnels also have upkeep costs; maintenance, electricity, pumps, etc. So you'd need to subtract the tunnel upkeep from the ferry upkeep before comparing how long it'd take for it to pay itself off in this manner.

Here's the thing. This highlights the difference between logistical investment for purpose, Vs for profit. Now over time those tunnels may require additional funds for repairs and renovations. However, they're indispensable and a positive asset to the country. Their value isn't purely monetary. They weren't built with money making specifically in mind. It's a fantastic infrastructure investment. Opening up the isles to function more as a combined territory. Speed and availability of transportation are the main contributes of a functional logistical system. If it had been the US they'd have built airfields on every island because it was cheaper. If it was the UK they'd have merely expanded the existing airport with additional runways because that'll fix the issue somehow. If it was China, they'd have built a better (yet unnecessary) port system to better connect the island chain. All these other approaches would have factored in financials directly as opposed to indirectly. Because they cannot see infrastructure as something that needn't turn a profit. They are incapable of looking at an economic project as a positive economic drain. Sometimes things that cost the government money, especially over time. Are a good thing. It stops money pooling and stagnating in public funds. Ongoing costs can actually be an economic net benefit. Those tunnels will require staff for maintenance. Roadies, sparks, engineers for the pump system, painters. What have you. Now, those individuals are civil servants. The upkeep and maintenance of those tunnels is important don't get me wrong. But it's also a positive feedback loop. They get paid by the government, and that money circulates within the local economy, which in turn builds a solid foundation for shops, stores, industry. All at the local level. Which in turn brings in outside capital. Not so much foreign investment, but more so tourist and holiday money. A strong, wide, baseline civil service is the greatest hedge against inflation any country can have. Faroe also does something very clever, which although it is directly a detriment to the rest of us. They took the quick and dirty solution to the foreign investment problem. You can't buy land on Faroe as a foreigner. You can't soak up any of their assets. This keeps exploitative investment out. In exchange for no massive economic booms. Now, that's not necessarily a bad thing. No booms, also gives them a severely diminished chance of a bust. Or big downturn period. Aslong as they don't become overly reliant on tourist money. They'll weather any global financial crisis. And a level of self sufficiency where they don't have to rely on exports or private companies to handle their transportation between the islands. Means they're basically unbeholden to the greater global economic situation at any one time. Ie, it all comes back to the tunnels lads.
@ReginOlasen3 ай бұрын
Good points, however the Faroese economy is also extremely reliant on salmon farming and pelagic fisheries, which could both crash at any time, and have done so in the past, leading to economic crisis

In Norway we have a lot of ferries and also a lot of undersea tunnels. The ferries are often operated by the county and subsidised by the state. One of the ways tunnels get funded is that if the county replaces a ferry with a tunnel, the state will continue paying the ferry subsidy. We should build a tunnel there.

About 10 years ago we were on a cruise which took in the Faroe islands. We hired a car for the day and did a road trip to the most northerly part we could reach (Viðareiði). We used 1 sea tunnel which was illuminated like a discotheque, but the other mountain tunnels were the “suicide” types with single track with passing places. Playing chicken with an oncoming pair of headlights was somewhat bum clenching but I thoroughly recommend the experience of driving through these beautiful islands with their amazing feats of engineering.

The tourism industry in the Faroe Islands is growing. People do indeed go on road trips. You can also buy some very nice wool sweaters as souvenirs. Or just wool yarn for your knitting hobby.

I have found hardly any jokes on this channel funny so far. But this drill and blast gag gets a thumbs up : P

Interesting video about the Faroe Islands! 🇫🇴 One correction to note is that the map at 1:45 is missing the state line of Virginia. I’ve actually been through the Cumberland Gap Tunnel, & the National Historic Park in the area is home to the tripoint of Virginia, Tennessee, & Kentucky! There is even an interesting monument for it. Cheers

I like how the narrator struggles to pronounce a specific word, then suddenly pronounces the next few words which are the same kind, but perfectly

Trust me, not a single Faeroese word was pronounced anywhere close to perfectly in this video 😅

Very cool. Iceland has quite a few tunnels to connect parts of the island and avoid long detours around the mountains (and in and out of all the fjords). It's nice to see a country invest in infrastructure...

I have, in fact, roadtripped the Faroe Islands. And also written my EPQ qualification (last year of high school equivalent thing) on this exact topic of undersea tunnels in the Faroe Islands

We blew up a tunnel connecting Seabrook and Deer Park to Baytown here in TX. It connected maybe a quarter million people. Replaced it with a giant-ass bridge though. Tunnel caused silting in a major port area.
