Nerd here: Duncan is indeed correct that if you kill a Demon or Devil on their native plane they truly die. Demons and Devils in dnd are two distinct groups, that have been at war with each other for eons. Devils are lawful evil and are from the Nine Hells. Demons are Chaotic Evil and are from the Abyss.

@stylesrj Devils and Demons are generally Lawful and Chaotic Evil, yes. There might be exceptions I'm not aware of, but it is very much designed that way. Paladins can still be evil as well as any another alignment, at least in the newer editions of dnd. I think since 4th edition.

"Usually Lawful" means that they _trend_ to that alignment, but that any large population is likely to have some exceptions to that trend, sometimes peppered throughout their population, sometimes as a secretive underclass or banished outcasts, or sometimes as a distant village apart from society, with a different culture than the rest. "Always Lawful", while it sounds airtight, is not. Not entirely. What it _does_ mean is that the populace as a whole is _extremely_ consistent, and that consistency is maintained by natural or supernatural forces which go beyond mere laws, culture, and inclinations. Exceptions _can_ exist, but _every single one_ of those exceptions is a special and noteworthy situation where something _very_ weird must have happened. So a Lawful Good demon paladin _can_ exist, but it's not _merely_ a matter of 'a demon was adopted by nice people and raised right'. Powerful forces _must_ have been at work somehow, to make that happen.

@@falleithani5411 Most of my knowledge comes from playing Neverwinter Nights 2... which is 3.5e... So I dunno how things are really in later editions. I am planning on playing Baldur's Gate 3 though. I did also try Planescape Torment a while back but once I got to the sewers I stopped playing and just don't want to proceed from there. I heard they got a succubus Paladin though and I dunno what her story is whether she was turned Lawful Good by divine powers or she decided to pull a Paarthunax and just fight against the very nature of being to become what they are?

@@stylesrj As for how the magic and powers of such a character would work... _Because_ they are extremely rare exceptions, brought about by extreme situations, the GM will generally special case exactly how that works for every individual, and it can vary. A demon who made a deal with a deity of Law and Good will likely suffer no ill effects from using good powers, thanks to that deity's protection. Whereas a Demon who was "mutated" by being loaded down with stones and thrown into an ocean of holy water for ten thousand years is much more likely to have messy and unpredictable side-effects from the conflict of powers within them.

The answer is "it depends on who's writing that particular book", because D&D's official lore is a bunch on inconsistent nonsense. _Generally speaking,_ yes, when an Outsider is slain outside of their home plane, they are merely sent back to their home to be reconstituted, often in a diminished form; killing them in their home plane usually kills them outright. However, sometimes this is only Outsider spirits (demons, devils, angels, etc.), other times it also includes mortals from other planes. Sometimes being slain by a material they are vulnerable to (such as cold iron for fey/demons) kills them outright, even outside of their home plane, or by an antithetical damage type (such as radiant damage to fiends); other times, they are discorporated as usual and return to their native plane to reform. Sometimes the _planar binding_ or _magic circle_ spells (or similar effects) can keep their essence bound, preventing them from reforming in their home plane, but other times not.
