This is a much needed conversation. So glad that it is happening. I am a 60 year old woman who is post-menopausal, but when I first started menopause, not one of my Doctors, male or female, related any of my symptoms to menopause. I thought I was pregnant, that my heart was going bad, and that I had mental issues. It wasn’t until a church member, friend of mine, who was also a nurse, gave me an article which listed about 37 symptoms of menopause, that I knew and understood what was happening to me, because I was experiencing over half of them. Like you all said, no one was talking about it. The only symptom I knew about menopause was hot flashes. So at our women’s health fair at my church, I had another nurse friend to come and enlighten us on the subject. Halle is so right. We have to make it ok to talk about. This is answered prayer 🙏🏾!

@@calashibryant295 I do want to encourage you to not become fearful. If you are perimenopausal or in full blown menopause, you are probably just experiencing some of the symptoms. The fear of not knowing for me caused me to become anxious and the heart palpitations, which is also from menopause to become worse. The fear took on a life of its own, lol. But once I knew what was happening, all the fear and 95% of the anxiety went away. Prayer and knowledge are powerful things. Thank God for his grace and mercy🙏🏾.

I applaud Halle for using her platform to change the conversation around menopause. Ultimately, the issue is how we view aging in this society. Youth is celebrated and the elders are discarded. Older women are constantly trying to look younger rather than focusing on aging gracefully. Saying someone is going through menopause implies that they are “old” which no one wants to be. That’s the issue.

I’m 60 now but when I was about 52, I was having some hot flashes at times but what scared me more than anything was the foggy brain. I actually thought I had some early dementia happening. I used to be great at remembering phones numbers and people’s names. Working at a large hospital, my coworkers would come to me so I could give them a certain department’s phone number right off the top of my head but suddenly I was unable to do this. New coworkers would get hired and I would forget their names. I had to ask my coworker who was already in menopause about this foggy brain stuff and she said oh yes that, you’ll be alright after 18mos or so. And she was right, I can now think much clearer and much better memory but it was a scary and embarrassing time for me.

I hope it goes away! Over a year ago, I started walking into rooms and not remembering why. i l also lost something by putting it away in an obscure cabinet, but that only happened once. I have a strong family history of Alzheimer's and was very worried. It took so much research on my part to find out it was connected to peri-menopause (I was in my late 40s and unaware due to being on the pill to suppress my periods). Thanks for letting me know your brain fog was a temporary issue, because my new GYN said none of my symptoms are a phase and that this is how I'll be from now on. I'm still confused by that. I thought this was a transitional phase until we are post-menopausal. Back to the drawing board.

I am so proud of you, Halle. What has happened to me and continues to happen to me is egregious. I am 62. Going through menopause for 10 years was horrific. Going through menopause yet doctors treating me for a mental illness was beyond incomprehensible. I trusted people who you are supposed to be able to count on. Everyone let me down. Today, I am fighting against those who should be protecting me. All because of being misdiagnosed and their failure to treat my symptoms properly. Before my mother passed away, she told me I was going through menopause. She shared with me her experience. It mimicked me , except I did not hear voices. It crushed my heart to know my beloved mother had such a horrific menopausal experience. After her death a couple of years ago, things became progressively worse. While trying to mourn my mothers abrupt passing, which caused a TIA in the left eye. My sight was partially obstructed. I have been mistreated by the police, the chief in my county, hospitals, and doctors. Being dubbed mentally ill when you're not is bad enough. Being sexually assaulted by a nurse's tech after being baker acted by a policeman out of my home. This action was executed against me and my husband's stern, NO. I, I'm just grieving my mother's death, fell on deaf ears. Well, I have yet to have anyone who can relate or understand. What has happened to me was the second nature of those who victimized me. I have no doubt that this treatment has been done repeatedly. It breaks my heart to know all of this started because I was considered mentally ill. Instead of someone who was going through menopause. I have reached out to the chief. I've reached out to the victim's advocate unit. I've written the governor. I wrote a grievance letter to the ombudsman of the hospital. No one has cared to take action on my behalf. I've asked the ombudsman of the hospital to give me the name of my assailant. He said he could not. I'm not sure what my next move will be, but I know I can not stay silent. Ladies, please listen to your body. Educate yourself on menopause. Be kind and give LOVE AND COMPASSION to your SELF. Never and I mean, never take the advice of just one doctor without thoroughly investigating their prognosis and asking many, many questions. Blessing, from someone who cares❤

I like Halle, but trust me that she is not the norm at all for what menopause or 50+ looks like. Kamala Harris is about a year older than her and looks her age, so she's the norm. I started peri-menopause right at 48 while still on the pill, and within 2 years, while still on the pill (now using as HRT), I aged at least 6 years and gained 7 lbs of mystery weight all in new areas like my stomach, upper arms, and back (this is called fat redistribution). The myriad of weird symptoms suck, such as not remembering why you went into a room, alopecia of the hairline/brows, and sebaceous hyperplasia on the face and neck, as does the fact that you suddenly see an old woman staring at you in the mirror. If I had Halle's money, I'd look great, too. She's right, though, as not one medical provider I saw could tell me why I developed all these random issues, although I recall one saying it may be "due to age." That's rather vague, and no one said peri-menopause once. I had to have a sit down with my new GYN this summer with a typed list of these non-GYN symptoms to finally get some semblance of an answer. I am a very educated patient, but the research just isn't there. Hopefully, Gen X women will forge the way for the subsequent generations of women who will also go through this big life transition called menopause.

Testosterone manufacturers Estrogen. Estrogen is an umbrella term for a number of hormones in the body. The gut is the biggest processing plant. That's why you need good gut health its paramount in women. The liver needs to working to capacity to filter out excess hormones. Every cell has receptors. Your eyeballs have receptors for estrogen. Your mouth and tongue.. That's why she said her eyes were at her in the video. Estradiol and Estriol.. Estrone is in the fat cells hence the belly weight. Lower level of estrogen not as good.
@oceans.and.deserts3 ай бұрын
@jessicahitchens6926 Testosterone in women is primarily produced in the ovaries, adrenal glands, and adipose tissue, albeit a small amount. Aromatase converts testosterone into estrogen. Obviously, the ovaries stop producing reproductive hormones, including testosterone, post-menopause. Not every woman has an abundance of different types of estrogen. Estradiol is highest in younger, non-pregnant women, estrone in post-menopausal women, and pregnant women have very elevated levels of estriol. Not every cell in the body has estrogen receptors, nor is the gut the primary processing plant for any reproductive hormone. Always happy to agree to disagree.

So, almost 15 years later since I hit menopause, my friends are now in peri-menopause but I am realising that we are still not talking about it or because it has shame attached to it. You can prevent both symptoms by taking estrogen and progesterone (or estrogen only if you do not have a uterus). I am in peri-menopause and still take my combo birth control pill to avoid those issues, as well as chronic, heavy bleeding like my mother had, which led to a full hysterectomy that I don't want. It's good to learn about things in advance, so kudos to you to start so young. To my knowledge, I didn't start peri-menopause until 48, so you probably have a long time of normalcy.

It’s not menopause, most MD’s are clueless about pretty much everything. They are medicators, not healers. As with any chronic condition, it is up to the individual to do the research and find a holistic doctor to work with, there are plenty of them out there who are very knowledgeable about menopause.

I had fibroid embolization surgery to remove my fibroids at age 47. About 3 weeks later I started getting these sudden hot flashes nightly. My husband called as menopause before I even realized what they were….. my doctor never informed me that the procedure could but me into full blown menopause!
@arami30573 ай бұрын
I had the same procedure done and thankfully my gynae gave me an estradiol and the hot flashes went away. 5 years in (42 now) with my doctors guidance I have stopped taking it (so far I have not experienced hot flashes) but I am going to have my bloodwork done to check my overall hormone levels and cholesterol. This is my year to put my health first, exercising 3 times a week, no sugar or processed foods, prioritizing sleep, reduced stress and I am feeling fab!

My doctor prescribed me some HRT to help with the symptoms. But yet, he still doesn’t tell me, what perimenopause is all about. I have to educate myself about it. Thanks, Halle Berry and GMA. This is the discussion that needs to be addressed. I truly feel sorry for the generation(s) of women in the past who suffered in silence such as my grandmothers, grandaunts, etc. Woman have to be their own advocate. They may refer to it as, "the change of life," but we gotta get this right. I now refer to perimenopause as half-time and menopause as the 7th inning stretch. Then postmenopause as third and fourth quarter. Eventually, entering the finals, then scoring a field goal and / or touch down. Why? You have made it this far and you're still here. Winning in this game of life. #girls #ladies #women

I’m not in menopause yet but most of my worst experiences with doctors have been male gynos and endocrinologists. They think just because they went to medical school they know it all but they haven’t lived as a woman and there are things a book just cannot teach you unless you experience it. This is why I explicitly only have female gyno and endocrinologists.
@TheAfiyfah3 ай бұрын
The women are just as bad, if not worse in many cases. You might also be surprised that many women report having a better experience with a male doctor than they did with female doctors. Sex isn’t a determining factor. A solid understanding of menopause complexities is.

It’s such a shame medical communities are not well equipped and trained for perimenopause and menopause. It is sad. But thank you Halle Berry for taking a step. Schools provided awareness when girls starts menstruating. But at work no one is talking about it. Women are struggling just like when we were pregnant. Poor people I never knew till I am in it. Awareness is needed more than what is available. Thank heavens for online communities.

Before that I was watching a very interesting and knowledgeable program on PBS, menopause. Doctors telling us we’re to young to be going through menopause well, there was a young woman who was only twenty years old who was diagnosed after many missed diagnosis.
