I was raised a Methodist and the first time I was allowed into the sanctuary for Christmas services this was played. As soon as the first notes everyone stood up. I didn't and my Dad slapped the back of my head and said STAND for this. At 75 I still stand, often just before the music starts as I know it's next one the program.

I've been watching all the versions of the Hallelujah chorus I can find, and this is my favorite version so far. I love how the singers don't have to look at sheet music. Everything is just so tight in this version, and most of the audience is engaged. They probably should have stood up though, ha ha. This was a once in a lifetime experience for them, for sure. There is one older man singing along, and a woman who is aware of the immensity of the moment. I do believe God enjoyed this one, and that the angels partook in this song. Here is where the lyrics come from: Revelation 11:15 Then the seventh angel sounded: And there were loud voices in heaven, saying, “The kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ, and He shall reign forever and ever!” Revelation 19:6 And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth. Revelation 19:16 And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.

I have now downloaded about ten versions of Händels Hallelujah for comparison and although I dont like this personal cult of Maestro Rieu (look only on this page how often you see "Rieu" - six times not counting URLs and the sidebar and how often "Händel" - zero) I admit that this one is for me the best interpretation - powerful fast drive with professional sound processing - simply delightful

Ah, the audience isn't standing. At least in the U.S., when the Hallelujah Chorus starts, all of the audience members stand & remain standing until it's finished. It's quite moving to see everyone rise en masse when those stirring opening notes are sounded.

When it was first played, the British king stood. So it became the tradition for the British people to stand to honor their king. If you are not a British, you need not to stand. It is a tradition to honor king not God. People don't stand when Allelujah of Mozart is played.

But since the King stood to honor God, I think you could make the case that we stand today to honor God. After all, most of the time the Hallelujah chorus is played, there is no King or Queen present! :)
