Not until later in the band's development. For example when Avi sings lead in Mary Did You Know for a phrase or 2 there is no bass line until he is done.

@@catherineharger8069 what? Scott covers Avi in Hallelujah. Nobody covers bass in the beginning of Mary did you know. It comes in after Avi drops back to it after the beginning solo.

I'm laughing because you are the FIRST reactors I've seen that, instead of being totally blown away by Mitch's voice, start focusing on Avi's bass accompaniment to it. Yes, you gave Mitch his props first, but then you went back to listen to Avi. Which he fully deserves, always, but EVERY OTHER REACTOR, bar none, is avidly watched by the Pentaholics for what we call "Mitch face." That stunned jaw drop during his solo. Well, going back to check, yes, you also gave us a lovely Mitchslap face, and I thank you for it. I love watching you guys react. You're both fully engaged and informative.

I swear I love Mitch. His voice is a miracle. What he does with it is amazing. Everything about him is amazing. But what Avi does in the background while everyone is getting Mitch-slapped in that section is possibly my favourite bit of music in all of PTX music that I've listened to so far. I don't know why. I just know that I'm grateful to hear I'm not alone in the appreciation.

Exactly! My only critique of their reaction - hitting that pitch and note was literally effortless for Mitch! He may have worked his vocal cords out during rehearsals, but here, in this video, hitting that note was pure class and yes, effortless! Thanks for pointing that out Sharon.

My understanding is that this was filmed in the summer for their Christmas album that year, hence the winter coats. However, it was hell hot when filmed and keeping their makeup from melting was a serious issue. BTW, your comments are the best parts of your reactions. It's why I keep coming back. Your sheer love of the music is so evident and I always learn something from your comments. Please don't change.

That’s not even close to the top of Mitch’s range - you should hear him singing in his whistle notes, or imitating the sound of a sharpie! XD I would also highly recommend the live Aha Singapore video, to fully appreciate both Avi and Mitch. Also, like someone else pointed out, thank you for noticing Avi’s section during Mitch’s solo. Mitch is absolutely mind blowing, but Avi’s countering notes just make it sound even more amazing. Mitch and Avi together is always fantastic. Imagine, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, Love Again, Can’t Hold Us are must-reacts. Also Avi’s “Change on the Rise” and Kevin’s cover of “Down” would be awesome. I love how you guys break down everything, and notice the tiniest details. I’d love to hear your thoughts (ok, see you blow your minds more) by listening to those! Fab work, guys

The vocal progression that Avi does in the background that I'm obsessed with are three notes (says the person who knows jack squat about music) starting after the line Mitch sings "is how to shoot at someone who outdrew ya" Also, the Aha- Singapore being recommended is one of the performances where Avi's low notes blew out a speaker. Just... fair warning about the quality of the sound there.

I love when new reactors say "Did you hear how high Kirstie went in that section?" when a lot of the time it's Kirstie and Mitch both in the stratosphere together. Once you've listened to them for awhile, it's easy to tell each member's voice from the others. Mitch and Kirstie blend so well together but you can still hear which is which pretty clearly. In that last powerful chorus, it was both Kirstie and Mitch singing those angelic high notes.

There's nothing wrong with being a baritone, doll :-) Scott ends up being the backbone a lot of their songs are built around, plus he stretches that "middle" up high and down low so well. after I got Mitch-slapped after hearing this for the first time, I probably watched maybe over a hundred reactions for this performance just so I could listen to it again and get other people's perspective. since then, I've come to understand how poetic the song is and appreciated how PTX did a marvelous arrangement to express the emotion of each verse to their audience. I wonder if there's a music sheet for this arrangement because it's really really wonderful to behold.

Avi is classically trained and already had an invitation to the L.A. opera house as their bass when Scott found out about him. He has a 5 octave range but is also a polyphonic/overtone singer which means he can sing two notes at once and has very nice whistle notes while singing overtones. Here is an example of his overtone singing. Not for reaction, but to let you know his phenomenal vocal abilities added to his already 3 octave range. kzbin.info/www/bejne/g56se3ZsaruKj80

When you do your Christmas week, make sure you include Home Free and their song "Do you hear what I hear" is insane and was arranged by Adam Rupp.

I just found you guys this evening and spent a couple hours listening to you react to Pentatonix and Home Free. Love them both! Your effortless banter makes for easy listening. I’d love for you to react to Sound of Silence (Pentatonix) and Ring of Fire (Home Free featuring Avi) Keep it up. You guys are a joy to listen to.

I have heard other reactors comment on how effortlessly Mitch pulls off those high notes while still in chest/head voice, where most guys would have to reach into falsetto to get that high. You have yet to experience the full Mitch-slap. Try "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" or "90's Dance Medley," or any of the others recommended here. I would save" Aha! live in Singapore at the Star Vista" for later, when you are a full-fledged Pentaholic and can overlook the inferior audio-visual quality of the fan cam for the sheer bliss of hearing Avi destroy the sound system while Mitch goes full-throat on multiple Red Bulls.

Yes for a week of Christmas accapella, of course with PTX, but Home Free also has so many amazing holiday videos, both funny and breathtaking!

Great reaction! You guys are hilarious. Kirstin slays the lead vocal in their cover of Say Something (the arrangement is also killer) and also her part in Amazing Grace. Bring tissues.

Scott Hoying, the baritone, covers bass when Avi Kaplan is on a lead. Scott has a really wide range, so the bass coverage is very good. Kind of amazing going from bass to mid-tenor!
