Did I hear it right? "If I took your name in vain, what's it to you?" Sad that people who sing so beautifully can't understand how offensive some lyrics can be.

If you're still curious, the lyrics you're referring to go: "You say I took the name in vain/ but I don't even know the name/ But if I did, well really what's it to ya?". Personally, I took this as somebody who has never had a strong connection with God being admonished for using religious language. Especially later, when those lyrics are followed up with: "There's a blaze of light in every word/ It doesn't matter which you heard/ the Holy or the broken hallelujah". It creates an image of someone who has never felt religion that still wants to experience a similar love and guidance. I find the composer's take on the lyrics touching, personally, but I can see where you're coming from.

I look at it as a plea of a truly lost person, who wants to "get it" but can't for whatever reason. It's a cry of someone giving up.
