Click here for all parts to this song in my Jeff Buckley playlist! • Jeff Buckley
In this Hallelujah guitar lesson series, I will show you how to play all the guitar chords to this incredibly beautiful song as performed by Jeff Buckley.
"Hallelujah" was written and performed by Leonard Cohen and originally released on his 1984 album Various Positions. However, it is Jeff Buckley's haunting cover of the song that is the most widely known, even reaching the top of the Billboard Hot Digital Songs charts in 2008 some 11 years years after Buckley's tragic death.
Jeff Buckley was a great guitarist and singer. The guitar parts he plays in "Hallelujah" can be both simple yet effective, to intricate and contrapuntal.
As for the tuning, you will need to tune your guitar to standard tuning but place a capo at the 5th fret. I will then teach the lesson calling out the chords and frets as they are compared to the capo. This will make it a bit easier to follow for most people.
As I mention in the video lesson, Jeff Buckley's picking patterns aren't very consistent in much of the song. Because of that, it will be very difficult to get everything down note-for-note. Jeff Buckley himself probably wouldn't be able to do that. There are a few sections where the picking is consistent, but for the most part, it will be about getting the right chords down, and then recreating the picking style that Buckley uses.
There will be two lesson videos. The first lesson will cover the intro and the verse and chorus sections. In the second video lesson I will demonstrate some of the features of the instrumental sections of the song to help you understand what is going on there.
Hope you guys enjoy this one! It has definitely been a very highly requested song here at GL365.
Carl...

FINALLY a lesson that captures all the musicality of Buckley's version and that is not just chords strumming or picking ! Im very grateful

Love how so many people on YT are like "Jeff Buckley tutorial" but then skip the intro and just play strummed open chords without a capo. So many hacks. You shouldn't be looking for an "easy" way to play this song; its attention to detail and every note is perfect and well thought out. Truly a master piece and if you want to learn it then you need to capture that same creativity to do it justice. You can learn a lot about guitar from playing a song like this.

Finally... a lesson that plays it more or less like Buckley himself. as you said, the way he play it varies from time to time, but this lesson is pretty good. Most of the lessons i find here on youtube for this specific song are way to simple, showing the cords, and a strumming pattern. Yes, that is nice for beginners, but there is some people out here as me, who want to learn how the song really goes! And you sir, made a dang good job!

ya thats true i like to play the song as it really sounds.. other people just dnt have a good ear and they think other guitar players are playin it correctly which pisses me off cause its just wrong.. im not a professional player but i have a very strong ear and when the thing doesn sound like in the song i just skip the lessons and try to do it by myself or try to find someone that hits it right.. this dude does it well i just discovered him and im glad he is great.

Little did I know how challenging this would be for a beginner! I came across your videos, and I'm going frame by frame - EVER so slowly, but omg it is SO beautiful. The music just sings!

Such unique note choices in the intro that make it so melancholy. Jeff was a very lyrical player. This song also had a quite complex delay sound.....prolly several units set to different delay times and blended. I knew of Jeff Buckley for a long time but only recently purchased 'Grace'. It has instantly become one of my favorite records ever.

Just take it a step at a time. Learn a bit, work on it til u got it then move on. Sometimes trying to learn everything at once is hard unless you already have the tune in your head and know how it’s supposed to sound. I recommend memorizing any song you try to learn so that way when you go to learn you can pick it up easy.

Great lesson!! I was just wondering: is your right thumb nail your natural fingernail, or do you use a more beefed up fake nail? It’s hard for me to tell from the video. If it is a fake nail, what kind is it (glue on, something they do at the salon, etc)? Was it hard to get used to the feel? Thanks!!

M36class I tell my students to practice the riff five (5) minutes a day. Start _slow_ speed will come. This advice may sound over simplistic. It's not tho'. Always be patient with yourself. The main point is to be accurate and, clean. There's nothing wrong with taking 3 or 4 notes of the solo at a time. Keep in mind ONLY five (5) minutes a day per riff. I'll bet you know people who've played guitar longer than you but suck. The main reason is they tried to play the whole solo without taking time to first be accurate and clean. Signed, someone whose been playing/teaching guitar since 1971
