@@Derick-xj3cs I'm not shocked that people who work outdoors, especially in the middle of the night, survived such an event. I've done this kind of job; you don't expect catastrophe, but you're ready for pretty much anything. Actually, because I did those sorts of jobs, I pretty much don't go anywhere without a multitool, headlamp, rescue whistle at least on my keychain, phone charged up and/or a charger, ... Currently I live in one of the worst earthquake zones in the world, but in general, stuff happens. You don't need to be in full on survival mode every day, but you do need to be basically ready to shelter and even crap in place, for at least several hours.

They were already under way. An anchor may have slowed them a little, but that much mass already in motion--an anchor wouldn't do much.

The story about reading skills, you can't actually test for that. For example, John Meyer, guitar god as he is, self admittedly doesn't know crap about music theory; he can't even read music. I've been a musician all my life, but I couldn't give you a dissertation on music history. Most of us are passengers, some of us are pilots. I was a C student until high school. I was treated like I was learning impaired. High school, High Honors, and I graduated from Harvard. The key for me was basically learning how to write, the basic sentence, paragraph, essay, and of course also how to read well organized writing. I simply needed to learn how to express myself in writing, and to understand the essence of what others were saying--the first and last sentence, paragraph, chapter, basically how things were organized. Tests, I also sucked at this. Multiple choice, they're screwing with you. This type of test should be banned. The only purpose of it is to make scoring tests easier for the teachers, and that sucks for teachers but you're a student so you shouldn't give a crap about that. That's not your problem. Even at Harvard, every course selection, I asked about the tests; if they were multiple choice, most likely that's a no if I had a choice. Bottom Line: There is nothing wrong with you or your child, and it's not some buzzword like alternate intelligence. You are not stupid.

Someone can work for a publishing company at the top of their game and cannot read sheet music. You can test for reading, writing, and arithmetic...the fundamentals of a literate society!

@JohnOhkumaThiel actually... it is... people would like there not to be a format [root word is "FORM"...related words are formula and format FYI]. Please check out hundreds of years of pedagogy. There is a tragic strategy to bastardize writings rules... but there is a logic to it. You can write however you want , but in order for people to understand , the writing format gives the reader clarity. The reason why I am hired to prepare students for AP exams and testing...it is to test for literacy. Sorry my friend...just allowing students to just write on their feelings and NOT engage in a text or topic that is not their own shows lack of literacy... P.s.....my students always get above average scores on tests. If you are going to college, then format is mandatory. If you are just getting a GED or high s hool diploma, then basic writing skills suffice....unfortunately, the kids who are struggling in the episode are expected to go to college...let them reach for the stars...they will meet those goals!

BALTIMORE IS A CONTAINER PORT WITH LARGE SHIPS AND HAS ALWAYS HAD LARGE SHIPS IN THE HARBOR. I would like to say, in no way am I downplaying how tragic this catastrophe is, nor do I even pretend to know the pain the families of those injured and killed are experiencing. My heart truly aches for you folks, and you are and shall remain in my prayers. May you find peace, and get resoution quickly, and God bless you all. We know what sort of recorders are on planes, black box etc. What sorts of recorders are on these ships? We elected not to board the ship today, to not interfere with search and rescue. If certain commodities depend on the Baltimore port and/or the bridge, then the Baltimore Bridge's collapse will have an impact on their transportation from the United States to other countries or on state-to-state commerce within the United States. Will it significantly alter world trade? It's doubtful, considering that there are several alternatives to the Baltimore port and that transnational trade does not necessarily require traveling to or through the United States to be viable, like, for instance, commerce between Africa and Europe, Europe and the rest of Asia, or Africa and Asia. The only immediate consequence of the bridge collapse incident that comes to mind is the potential delay in the passage of ships already in the area to other destinations; it could temporarily disrupt the supply chain arrangements of countries looking forward to cargo ships arriving from or passing through the Baltimore port.
