Before the Media orange and purple slipcase there was the Time Life mail order release, which is very rare, then the MEDA release, which was Media before it became Media. The Meda and Media look almost identical. There was also a release known as Medaween, which was a Blackenstein Meda slipcase with black and white Halloween label placed over it. That’s also very rare.

Something about VHS makes Halloween scarier. The original VHS copy really makes it look like a found footage film found in the aftermath of a home invasion.

Halloween was THE movie that scared the absolute shit outta me when I was eight years old. Halloween made its debut on NBC on 10/30/81, the weekend Halloween II opened. I saw the film years later on Media Home Video & loved it. When I was working at Blockbuster, I picked up a copy of Halloween for a buck. A year later I had gotten a laserdisc player from Pioneer & got the Criterion Edition. That was great but what was even better was the 2 disc Special Edition released in 99. I still have that version w/ the lenticular cover, & of course disc 2 was the TV version w/ the new footage. ***The scene when Linda rushes into Laurie's house, saying there's an old guy out there following her. The inside is Laurie's home, but, in reality, the outside of the house is Nancy Thompson's house from a Nightmare On Street*** Right around 2002-03, during the wild west days of ebay, I placed bids on the original painting for Halloween that was used to mass produce the one sheet poster. It was on a reserve bid & I tried to find out who the seller was. It got up to sixteen grand & the only response from the seller was that it is the original painting & would come with a COA. Very weird. The painting was incredible, but, I didn't see it sell.

As a horror fan and a VHS collector still I find this to be the most comprehensive for the Halloween releases. Excellent job on presenting it for fans of the movie. Know I’m bragging here but I was very lucky to find a non rental media VHS release maybe around 10 years back at a flea market in pristine shape for just a few bucks. One of my pride and joys of my VHS horror collection.

This is awesome! Thanks for putting that all together. It's hard to believe that despite my frugality and resolve to not buy every version of a movie released, I still bought this thing EIGHT TIMES in my life (so far), which is probably the most times I've ever purchased a single film. I wish I kept my two-tape set from back in the day. Thanks again for running through this history!

Cool video-I thought I had all the releases (even UMD!) until I watched this! I remember seeing it in widescreen for the first time on laserdisc (mother wouldn't let me watch horror movies the whole time I was growing up, so I had to wait until I left home to see it; Never even saw it in the theatre until about six years ago when they had a festival in NYC)-what a revelation! In the scene where Bob and Linda are making out on the Wallace's couch, the camera pulls away, and then there's a musical sting-I had always been mystefied as to why, until I got to see the entire frame and realised that the camera reveals Michael standing in the shadows in the next room, watching them make out (as he did so many years prior, when his sister Judith was making out). Thanks for making this one, Halloween is definitely worthy of the treatment, given the almost countless releases its had!
@mikeysingleton63892 жыл бұрын
There was a release before media, you see, media used to be called MEDA and Charles Band was a co owner of the company and right before he parted ways, MEDA put out Halloween and he left and started up wizard video, and meda was changed to media after Band was gone. And the Meda release IS THE RAREST release on vhs.

Like i said in your jaws video, love this idea. I think another thing you can add is a timeline that's on the bottom that as you talk about a new release you add it. This will give a visual of the time between different releases and can be super informative for anyone watching to see which two releases had the largest gap or the smallest. Will make the video a tad bit more interactive for the viewer. Otherwise amazing and watched these back to back

Hi from across the pond, Milton Keynes. Been a long time subscriber and your channel has always been a go to for reviews. Your honest opinion on is it worth upgrading from blu ray to 4k has been really useful and has saved me money. I've been a collector all my life, currently have 3000 + blu ray and 4k. I started out on VHS when I was 13 and it stayed with me (which really sometimes annoys my wife), anyway just wanted to say hello, really love your channel. This feature on the evolution of films from VHS, DVD, blu ray, 4k etc is a fantastic feature, please do more. I actually helped my then 15 year old Son do a school project on the evolution of Star Wars on physical media, which got him a gold credit. He like me is a film fanatic which now he is 25, and a subscriber of your channel and collector, often annoys his wife as well ☺️ Keep up the good work my friend. 👍

I was at 15-year-old Junior high student in 1978 in a suburb of Kansas City. My older cousin whom I always went to rated r movies with picked me up and took me to see Halloween. I have loved Halloween ever since and have since turned by younger son onto the movie many years ago. I have real vivid memories of what it was like in the theater that night and it was crazy. It scared the crap out of everyone. I get this really Kick-Ass feeling during Halloween if you can feel the crisp air and the smell of fallen leaves reminds me of that evening every time. I watch Halloween only once a year and it is on Halloween night. One of my favorites.

The first time I saw Halloween was in the fall of 1980, a friend from school had cable TV and after we watched it, we where scared to go upstairs, the lights where off and we where the only two in the house at the time, my friend passed in 1985, but I'll never forget that scary night in 1980.

Great new segment for the channel! Would love to see more home video history, especially with something like Jaws or Indiana Jones. I bought the tv version on vhs from a Roses back in 1989. I had no idea that it wasn't the theatrical version, and I watched it countless times for years. So imagine my surprise when I pick up the dvd around 1999 and find out that the ACTUAL theatrical version is COMPLETELY different, there's boobs at the beginning, Loomis just appears out of nowhere, riding around in the car with the nurse, the scene with Laurie with the towel on her head is gone, and there's a few extra cursewords and scenes of violence, none of which improved the picture very much in my opinion. I STILL to this day can't STAND watching the normal theatrical version without the MUCH better introduction of Loomis at the beginning that was filmed in 1981, I actually have always wondered if the audience was extremely confused back in 1978 when he just appears out of nowhere. I wish they would release a PROPER combination of the theatrical cut together with the extra footage, and THE ORIGINAL MONO SOUNDTRACK, they don't EVER bother to put the original mono on that version on the various blu-ray releases, so it makes it unwatchable to me, I always just have to stick with the original theatrical cut, with the unsatisfying intro sequence.

Hey Jeff. I've seen your videos before and liked them and wanted to let you know that this is a GREAT topic for real multi-release collectibles nuts, such as myself. Just the other day I had the websites up for Scream Factory (in the US) and Second Sight (in the UK) for their upcoming 4K release of Dog Soldiers, to see which one had more special features. I love the images you include and the level of detail and the facts you find. I know you said the videos take a while but I did have a suggestion but not sure if possible: have a visual timeline on the screen with the year and the formats noted so we can literally see the length of time the movie has been out in the market and when on its timeline it hit each of the formats. One movie suggestion: Alien (1979). I know that had many releases in many different formats. I myself have it on VHS Box Set (at the time it was only a trilogy); DVD Box Set 1 (with sequels and some extras); DVD Box Set 2 (the "Quadriliogy" super-ultra special edition release); Blu-Ray Set with all of the films and even more extras; and on 4K, which is the only Alien film to be released on the format yet. Terminator 2:Judgment Day (my fave film of all time) would be another suggestion, as it also had quite a few releases, including S-VHS, and it was the first RSDL dual-layer switch DVD when it premiered on that format, Thanks again for the great content!
