I do like that idea too. And in the OG he stalked her also. She was essentially his first target after his sister. But in this film it kind of defys logic with the whole "random people catching his attention" because he specifically comes back for his first target, after 40 years, which is random and doesn't quite equate to a "random person caught his attention" killer. His escape was planned and meticulous to go back to the place his original murder spree happened (which makes sense) and find his first target (which I always thought was random logic, ESPECIALLY after 40 years) which bumped 2018 storyline a bit down for me if we being real.. But everything else about this Michael is Perfect.

Yes, exactly this. It was at this part of the movie I realized that these guys really understood what they were making. Really they were restoring Halloween back to it roots and not the garish generic franchise slasher villain they turned Michael into. His character was simple yet unique in that it does not require a motivation. There is a low-key macabre sense of playfulness in his killings as well. And in that sense the shape is more like a relentless force of evil. This blank pale emotionless face with the blackest eyes, the devil’s eyes.

This is what has always made Michael scary, his targets are random. He doesn't choose out of any order, because this movie erases the notion of Jamie Lee Curtis being his sister makes it all the more. See the fact that they're not related means he just picked her just because and that's all, the only reason why he is truly after is cuz she escaped.
@Billonator1174 жыл бұрын
Even better in the movie, he isn't really after her at all. He just walks around killing random people until the therapist drives him near the house where he just continues his killing spree. Honestly, he might not even recognize her after all these years, even though she thinks he'll come back for her. That's what I love about Michael Myers, is that we don't know his motives at all because he never speaks, and either of us could be right, we'd never know.
@kedjr884 жыл бұрын
@@Billonator117 that's what always made him more of a threat than all the other horror movie villains, to quote the The Dark Knight "Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn" and is it more poignant when Michael Myers is trapped in a basement that's burning all around him and still never makes it sound just stands there and watches.

@D. Robinson I guess you didn't read what the post was about all the horror movie villains you just name all have motives, but not Michael Myers that's why he was scarier cuz there's nothing he wants, most of the ones you named are driven by revenge. Didn't you not catch The Dark Knight reference I did
@kedjr884 жыл бұрын
@D. Robinson okay Freddy Krueger he likes to kill because he likes molesting children and he's doing it out of revenge, the Jeepers creepers creatureit's doing it out of survival he has to replace multiple organs in his body to survive, Jason Voorhees he's doing it mainly because in his sick mind his mother is telling him to do, the candy man out of pure revenge, Chucky killing because he's a psycho and also he needs to find a perfect body for him to jump into,leatherface pretty much being told by his family to kill people, Michael Myers killed his big sister for no reason goes around town killing people for no reason after escaping
@DarkCyberElf4 жыл бұрын
@D. Robinson If I might step in here to this back-and-forth... I can give a litany of reasons why Michael Myers is in many ways, objectively more terrifying as a slasher than the numerous slasher/horror movies that would follow in the original '78 Halloween's footsteps. To address the subject of motive/desire/raison d'etre, which I do believe is an important aspect to establishing what makes a character "tick", and indeed what makes a horror icon or monster that much more horrifying, I'll say that in principle, what makes Michael Myers scarier in this regard than say Freddy Krueger is the matter of the Unknown. To some extent, we not only know what Freddy Krueger wants to do, or accomplish, but we know how to "beat" him to the extent that the "Nightmare on Elm Street" movies explain his origin and status as a "dream demon". Not only do we get a method by which he can be warded off or guarded from, but we know WHAT he is, and that in some ways, he is predictable and knowable to the degree that you might not know what situation he will put a character in, but that it will relate to their specific fears and doubts, and that there are ways to gain power over him by alleviating yourself of fear of HIM specifically. Michael Myers on the other hand has a known origin as well, as simply a little boy of no more than six years old, who at some point was stricken with murderous intent and killed his sister in cold blood, and then following this, precisely 15 years later did the same to many others without remorse or even a semblance of understanding what he was doing, for what reason, and nary a desire to explain it to anybody. You cannot anticipate what he's going to do, to whom, and why, in any way, SHAPE, or form. As Kyle's mentions of the Dark Knight are apt, The Joker's "I just DO things" suffices to explain the machinations of Michael Myers: the only consistent behavior is that he kills, or at least tries to, and it doesn't seem to have any logic to it beyond the methods and the premeditation enough to do so without reckless abandon as though he were an animal with no intellect. And this aspect of his character, as written in the 1978 and 2018 films, which is his lack of conscience and therefore reason, at least certainly not one he possesses the ability to articulate, is what makes it terrifying. Unlike Krueger, Myers will never ACKNOWLEDGE you (as another human being normally would), he will never SPEAK to or with you, his acknowledgements appear to be minor hesitations granted by only a few things such as saying his name or causing him a nebulous amount of pain so that he becomes briefly distracted or even at best, incapacitated. It never lasts long however, and he will always resume brutally assaulting his victims, with no qualms about doing so in an extremely savage and painful way, occasionally exhibiting extraordinary feats of strength, pain tolerance, and patience. Unlike Jason, there isn't anything in particular that defines Michael's "reasons" for doing what he does, much less the presence of a personality, and again unlike Jason, he was never "wronged" in such a way that revenge or hatred might be a motivating factor. It can be implicated that many of his murders are selected by virtue of seeing promiscuous behavior, but later we realize that is completely irrelevant, as he targets the virginal, straight-laced Laurie Strode, at first as a stalker/voyeur, and then as a relentless predator who goes through several of her friends until horror cinema's first "last girl" just barely gets away thanks to the timely arrival of Dr. Loomis. It isn't even really clear that Michael Myers "enjoys" what he is doing in the conventional sense, as his actions would definitely assume a certain degree of sadism and aggression, but when he is killing he barely so much as lets out a breath or a yell. The usual human behavior accompanying aggression and violence is to be quick, loud, and deliberate, but while Michael's stalking and killing lacks the deliberate precision of a predator in nature, it remains slow, controlled and above all, extremely effective.

This is a truly special scene. With this one scene, you know everything you need to know about Michael Myers. Notice how he doesn't really walk with a plan, he's almost robotic in the sense that he moves from target to target but he does walk with purpose even if it's mostly random killings. He doesn't react to anyone or anything, he just keeps moving, only stopping to temporarily reassess his surroundings. He's also not really fancy in this scenario, looking for quick and efficient kills. Almost as if he's trying to kill as many people as possible, since there's so many folks walking around, so he doesn't concern himself with a specific way of doing things. In the original and later on in this film and Kills, he will take his time if there's only a handful of people and he's in a dark area which suggests he does enjoy toying around with his victims if he has the opportunity. To me, he's without a doubt the most terrifying horror villain in film history due to his lack of sentience or nuanced backstory. He's just a machine and there's no real way to impede him or reason with him. The only thing that gives him pause is if you remove his mask, he seems to temporarily place priority on putting it back on over killing people. Earlier in the movie, the only thing that makes him react is when that idiot podcaster showed him his mask. I have no idea why that is and it just makes him even more mysterious. Perhaps it's because he considers it his true face.

The creepiest thing about this sequence is how purposeful Michael's movements are. He's not just running through houses or killing indiscriminately on the street. He stops, looks, and keeps going. It doesn't feel like he has a plan necessarily, but he's also incredibly controlled. His only goal is to kill and on a whim he goes into each house that seems the most vulnerable. It's horrifying how realistic this feels with how he's able to get away with it for a few moments. Easily one of my favorite sequences of the movie.

The one thing people probably remember most about the series is also the one thing that, in my opinion, partially ruined Michael's scariness: Making Laurie Michael's sister. it suddenly gave Michael's killing more purpose, which in turn made it a bit less scary. Making Laurie the reason Michael goes after her makes it seem more like a personal vendetta or mission, and all of Michael's kills inbetween just seem like people that either get in the way or victims of circumstance as Michael searches for his true target... but this movie erasing that suddenly brought all the fear back to Michael the original had... he doesn't HAVE an objective.. he doesn't HAVE a target... his killing is at complete random, which means no one is truly safe. This makes Michael seem much more like the embodiment of "Pure Evil" that he's supposed to be. He is a supernatural force of nature that murders at complete random, and there's nothing you can do to stop him or predict where or who he's going after next, which suddenly makes the average home in suburbia on a Halloween night a far, far scarier place to be than it ever should be, which was the whole impact behind the first film.
@jurassicpark1fan9204 жыл бұрын
I agree that Michael not being Laurie's brother makes him scarier but if he kills randomly then why did he stalk Laurie?
@demonfoxgirl10004 жыл бұрын
@@jurassicpark1fan920 in the first film, he may just be taking his time to play with her for no special reason. in the 2018 sequel, he's after her because she's the one who got away. maybe there's an interview with JC explaining it? figure it out for yourself
@starrsmith38104 жыл бұрын

Still, from a screenwriting standpoint the original is better since everything is purposeful despite the fact of michael being pure evil, it has direction and detail, wich makes every desicion he makes important the plot, in the original laurie wasn't her sister but she was still the main target, we just dont know why, what makes the first film work is that despite the fact that he kills randomly he still targeted laurie and wanted to get to her, the reason he stalked tommy was because he was with laurie, the reason he killed bob was so that he could kill Linda while she was alone, and he killed annie and Linda because that made his job easier to finally kill laurie while she was alone, im not saying he didn't enjoy killing the rest of them because he surely did but laurie was his main focus, maybe because she was the first person she saw in haddonfield, or because she was standing infront of his house, maybe she reminded him of her sister, wich would kind of explain the tombstone on Annie's bed so that laurie could see, idk the film is really ambiguous into why he wants laurie wich i love because it makes him mysterious, thats the no reason no conscience pure evil thing loomis was talking about, but having a specific goal isn't the same thing as a big reason, we dont know why he wants laurie but we do know she was the main target during the whole film, now il talk about H18, i like the hammer scene since he would need a knife just like he killed the mechanic in the original because he needed new clothes, same thing in this one, also the podcasters kill was also necessary for him to have the mask, just like the kill in the bus crash was important ,those kills are good because we understand what he wants, we do need to have a sense of direction for the film, they could've done something to make him want laurie, maybe have michael see Allyson and make him wanna kill her, maybe allyson can be in denial of what laurie tells her without realizing the same thing will happen to her, or if thats to convinient maybe make it happen to vicky wich will make her a good charecter more than an unimportant one,dave would also be important to the plot because hes the boyfriend, allyson can be one of the targets because michael knows shes vickys friend and is close to her just like dave is, the kills would feel more understandable like michael killing the parents of some kids allyson and vicky are babysitting, kills that feel important to the plot instead of fan service,conect that with laurie hunting michael with deputy hawkins, hawkins could be Dave's grandfather idk anything it would also give the film the small town feel that the original had, you could still have all that with laurie and her struggle with trauma and you can also have michael do what i mentioned without having a complete reason on why he wants to do it and have a well structured film instead of just randomness and filler, the supernatural thing was something the 2nd film since carownter stated hes almost supernatural not completely, hes still human, so just saying hes 100% completely a force of evil kind of ruins the mysticism of the charecter the same way that the brother and sister element ruins it, the inhuman force is more in line with the sequels the same way the brother and sister is more in line with the sequels, the 2nd film brought the brother and sister thing wich i didn't like at all and i like not knowing what michael is, knowing his tactics and tragedies and goals isn't the same thing as knowing why he has the main goal, i wanna see him plan, stalk his victims with care and know who hes going for, the first film was ambiguous on what michael really was and why he wanted what he wanted but we still knew his target and tactics
