Halloween 2021 Pirate Radio Activity Report/XFM Shortwave & More

This is my annual Halloween search of the shortwave radio bands for pirate radio activity. This is usually an active time of the year.

Years ago, many of the pirates used to broadcast on weekends (as well as Halloween) so listeners would know what days to listen for them. I wonder if this still applies today. Just now getting back into the SWL hobby. Great video!

I do hear some on weekends once in a while so it still happens but I don't think as much as in years past. But there are a lot of them out there if you search for them.

I was listening to a few of these on the Saturday before Halloween and it seems like someone of these would send SSTV to identify? I didn't have my software running but it sounded like SSTV.

Yes, some were sending SSTV and I had my program running for that but for some reason it was not decoding properly so I will have to look into that.

Hello Larry, My name is Marc. I have a question for you regarding a Mag Loop Antenna I saw on one of your KZbin videos. I live here in Minnesota in an HOA, with that being stated I am unable to have an antenna outdoors. I am not an amateur radio operator, but I do talk on SSB with some friends. I really like the Magnetic Loop Antenna. Is it possible you can provide some information on the design of the antenna? Thank you Marc

I may try to do another video on that in the future. There are a lot of designs out there if you google the topic with some designs and also loop calculators for the freq you want to use it on.

Larry, what is the software you use on the computer in the video? I'm trying to learn more about this stuff. Thanks. Ever consider doing the Halloween broadcast as a live stream?

I have not considered that, maybe someday I could try that. The program I am using is the SDR Play with SDR Uno software and I am using the 9 mHz IF output from the back of the radio into the SDR Play, sometimes I just use the SDR Play stand alone also, it is a good receiver.
