Over the years, Halloween has changed for many of us. But, we always end up looking back on some of our fondest memories of ones that have come and gone.
Why is it that we do that? And what about the 1990s made Halloween so special?

Halloween has always been special to me, but i dont know what it is today but a lot of us seem way more nostalgic for Halloween than anything else. I mean, for 31 days in October I'm just completely in Halloween mode! It has consumed me the past 7 or 8 years now, especially since/during the pandemic... It just the greatest time

I never really changed the way I celebrate. I mean, I guess I did, but I never stopped watching all those kids things and if I could I would still trick-or-treak. To quote Grandma Aggie from Halloweentown "Being normal is vastly overrated." Plus, it's a nerdy holiday. Cosplay. I never really grew up, though.

Halloween as a kid was truly the best! I remember going to school in costume and one of the things we’d do is trick or treat up and down the hallways and each classroom would be decked out. After we’d have a Halloween party in our classroom. Getting home was so exciting. I’d turn on Disney channel and watch any Halloween specials that were on. My parents would always order pizzas for dinner and then we’d go out trick or treating and we would be out for hours. We’d even take pillow cases so we could get more candy. I remember one of my favorite costumes as a kid was when I was Glenda the good witch from Wizard Of Oz and I think I was even one of the pink lady’s from Grease one year because I was obsessed with that movie even as a kid. It’s memories like that that I wish I could go back to it during this time of year because it was so much more magical. As an adult though it’s also fun to make new memories and take it all in.

As an 80’s kid growing up Halloween was amazing. I remember watching the Halloween safety videos in school on joe to be seen and not run out infront of cars. Definitely remember having a Halloween party the day of in school. Don’t remember what we watched in school. But I remember having all the cousins come over and mom and dad would get pizza before we all went out. I remember watching Garfield’s Halloween and Charley brown as we sorted all our candy. I don’t miss the the 89’s crappy costumes

It always baffles me that some people’s parents don’t celebrate Halloween because they’re super religious when my mom is extremely religious and Halloween is her favorite holiday, every year she goes all out with decorating the house with witch decorations and she creates elaborate Halloween parties every year because she loves the holiday so much

Nickelodeon had good Halloween specials as well. For example, in October 2000, I remember watching a Nick movie called Cry Baby Lane. I remember thinking it was a little creepy (I was 11 at the time) but good overall. After that airing, the movie wasn’t seen I think again until a Reddit user who recorded the airing found the videotape in 2011.

Yeah Halloween was different back then. I remember being at school on Halloween and it was just fond memories for me seeing everyone dressed up and getting excited about trick-or-treating later that night! It was great. My day care held a contest for best or scariest costume and I remember I won and got a full box of the big candy bars lol. I dressed up as Billy the puppet back when SAW III just came out so the hype was real. My day care also had a haunted house and it was actually pretty good. They had sheets covered in blood hanging as walls and scare actors everywhere yelling and screaming and fog with the strobe lights. I mean as a kid I thought it was pretty scary lol. I also remember my neighbor who was a practical effects worker for the movies went all out at his place. I mean this guy had it all and he was easily the scariest house in the neighborhood! He had huge loud speakers playing creepy music and so many props and lights. I just remember I went trick or treating with my friends with pillow cases full of candy and we ended the night with that last house which was a banger! For me the candy I miss is the body parts gummy’s. It was a pack of gummy’s that had a bloody finger and an ear with an eye ball and a brain. I loved those as a kid and I freaking miss those! If they still make them idk where to get them but I would love passing that out to trick or treaters so they can experience that candy as well. I loved that popcorn ball too lol. It was a different time back then for sure but I will say this, Halloween is still great now. Trick or Treat Studios makes extremely accurate masks and when I was a kid the masks we had were good but not screen accurate or anything. I think today’s kids don’t realize how awesome the masks they have are. If I had a reverse bear trap mask from trick or treat studios when I was a kid that would have been insane!! I still own it now as an adult which is really cool but that’s what I mean. Kids today have stuff that I never had so I think Halloween is different nowadays but still great!

As a single mom in my mid 30s who grew up in the early 2000s I can tell you I do NOT miss any of it. I did what I did and I dont live in or miss the past. I must've not had the childhood people around are always "missing" or being nostalgic for because I actually enjoy my HALLOWEENs more as a mom. I have more fun and in our house Halloween is every day 😂😂😂 I bought fake blood the other day and sprayed it on my arms like a serial killer lol. Someone said "getting ready for hallowen I see.." I said "Oh no this is just how I always look." 🤭🤭🤭😇

I remember Halloween as a kid in the 90s they would have school parties and on Halloween night. I would go trick-or-treating and then by 1997 I stopped trick-or-treating and then Halloween just became another day on the calendar but in the 2000s there was a resurgence me and my cousins started going to haunted houses. Then when I became 18 we went to a nightclub in San Francisco Halloween night of 2003 then five years later in 2008 we went to a rave in my hometown of Seattle.. a year later and 2009 Halloween just been dead. None of my cousins even hang out anymore. I barely see them some of them I haven’t talked to in over a decade and Halloween is pretty much dead for me… but in 2021 on Halloween morning I had sex with a beautiful Korean woman. It was amazing and later that day I smoked a bunch of pot and got some little Caesars pizza and went over to my brother-in-law’s house and we watched some scary movies. To me, the spirit of Halloween is just gone, but I try to think of some interesting things I could do on that day. All of my childhood friends became really lame and they flake out when it comes to doing fun things so I don’t rely on them anymore. I just try to enjoy the day for what it is….

I never understood nostalgia. South park's "memba berries". In the early 80s, we went trick or treating all night, alone. There were much less Halloween specials, so it was a huge event when you got one. But kids today have the same thrill and excitement in a different way. Things change. It wasn't better "in my day", it was different.
