For years I used to decorate as an abandoned zombie apocalypse safe-house (the candy was 'the last of the supplies'). Sadly, our neighbourhood simply didn't get trick or treaters for years so it stopped being worth the effort, and none of the neighbours really decorated beyond a pumpkin or a flag, so it kinda felt like that one video where the person has ALL the decorations.

This year was the first year other people on our street decorated for halloween, and we lived here for 26 years lol we didn't get many or really any trick or treaters for the past 4-5 years but we still put up the decor and this year we actually had quite a lot of trick or treaters.

You should look up "Whitby goth festival", the place that inspired Bram Stoker to write Dracula. Twice a year, April and October, they have the festival, you don't have to dress up, but the costumes are amazing, some people go all out. There's a lot of steampunk costumes too. It gets sold out very quickly, it's very atmospheric, they have markets selling all kinds of spooky home made stuff, and people come from all over the world. I wish I lived closer, the best my town does, is an Elvis weekend, where people come from all over the world to dress up as him and sing/karaoke all weekend! 😂

@paulsphotos2 ай бұрын
@@aj897 Not really. The Celts disguised themselves as the dead at All Hallows so that they wouldn't be taken by the spirits that crossed over to our world, which is where the tradition of dressing up as ghosts started. Trick or treating evolved from this when people dressed up as spirits and went around looking for gifts or offerings on behalf of the dead. Also the Jack-o-lanterns were originally carved from turnips, and only switched to pumpkins in America as they are plentiful, and bigger, so that's essentially the same.

But now I am remote and haven't had much of an occasion to costume up for. I definitely still want to keep doing it and probably next year I will try to find a reason to go somewhere in a costume. I still have the parts of a plague doctor costume that I never got to wear, so for sure want to give that one at least one occasion to be worn.

Halloween, or "All Hallows Evening (Hallow E'ening = Halloween)" originated in Ireland as the autumnal celebration "Samhain" (yes, you probably just said it wrong unless you're learned -- it's pronounced "saow-in" or "saa-wn" because Irish) which was a harvest festival marking the end of the harvest season, being the celebration before All Hallows Day -- the celebration of the Saints. The Celts followed a calendar that separated the year into months of light and months of dark (things such as Samhaim in October, Ostara [Easter] in March-April, Yule [Christmas] in December, etc.), Samhain being a celebration that rang in the winter or "darker half" of the year. The Celtic day began and ended at sunset, and "Samhain" is the Irish name for November, so on the evening of October 31st was the "first of Samhain" hence why the celebration begins the evening before the 1st of November/All Hallows Day, the 31st of October. Now the name "Halloween" makes sense with "een" being a shortened version of EvENing (such as words like "ne'er-do-well"/"never-do-well). It was believed that the veil between our world and the Otherworld (basically the supernatural world of the Irish but not the gathering place of souls -- that would be Tech Duinn or "House of Donn") and there was chance of overlap between humans and the spirits/fairies (aos sí), so the spirits were appeased with gifts of sweets and foods to ensure they (the Celts) would survive the winter. It is believed that the idea of dressing up in a scary costume was a means of mimicking the spirits, or at the very least paying homage to, so that they would not intend to do you harm or misfortune. ALL of this happens in the BC times, mind you, and it wasn't until Julius Caeser was a Roman celebration mixed with the Celtic Samhain (because conquering and assimilation) that things start to seem more "Halloweeny". For instance, an important symbol of the Roman's celebration was an apple -- and now during the harvest season in October we have the "game" of bobbing for apples. And it's all because of Julius Caeser. :| Anyway, as time goes on and Christianity beats out the Romans Halloween becomes entangled with Christianity, more time passed and America gets ahold of Halloween (or Mischief Night) in which is where the idea of "Trick of Treat" comes from. Basically, snot-nosed little American brats would go around and fuck your shit up (the trick) unless bribed with sweets and candies (the treat). To make an even longer story short (yes, this is the short version) with all things combined you wind up with the modern corporate holiday of Halloween where people dress up as scary figures or pop culture references, traverse the streets of their nearby neighborhoods, ringing doorbells for Twix and Kit-Kats. Even the Jack-O-Lantern traces back to Ireland with a story about a tricky old codger, a bet with the Devil in which Stingy Jack cheated, Jack's comeuppance, his banishment from Heaven because of his ways and of Hell because of his devious tricks, and punishment to wander the land between never finding peace with only a smoldering coal to light his way which he hallowed (eh? EEEEEEEH?!?!?!) out his favourite food to stick the coal in... That's right, a fuckin' pum---- ... turnip. Yeah, it started as a turnip. Man, imagine the Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow being depicted with his Jack O'Lantern head, and it's a puny turnip.... ANYWHO! TL;DR Halloween comes from Ireland in a portmanteau of the Celtic Samhain, the Roman holiday Feralia, the assimilation into European Christianity, and America's hellion youth blackmailing (basically) people for treats. If it's something you're interested in by all means deep-dive into researching it and other Celtic holidays, you'll find many of them you actually sort of know already from pop culture alone (everything from Tolkien to GoT). ~ Signed, your beloved Irish nerd Cuidightheach O'Duinn (If you want a little extra humour, look into the meaning of my name -- it'll be quite clear my parents were the Irish equivalent of "star children") -For those of you too lazy to look into it, Cuidightheach means 'helper' or 'helpful one', the O means of or descendant of, and Duinn means 'brown' but is also another spelling of 'Donn', a god of the dead and lord of Tech Duinn; so quite literally 'Helpful one of Donn/god of Death'. A bit too fitting-
